Chapter 13
It was almost 1030 pm on the following Friday night by the time Madhu reached Maya's farmhouse on the outskirts of Delhi. The birthday celebrations were already in full flow, but Madhu was delayed as she had an important deadline at her office this weekend. In fact, many people in the team had planned to come in on Saturday to finish the work, but Madhu's plan was to stay over the night at Maya's farmhouse after the late celebrations - just like everyone else - and spend most of Saturday with friends, before picking up the remaining work at home on Sunday.
Madhu got out of the cab and quickly spotted Rohan standing near the door. He welcomed her and introduced her to a few others that she didn't know, including Nisha, Maya's younger sister who was in the final year of her college and Akash, one of the people on RK's and Maya's Mumbai project team. Her eyes however, were searching for her Rishabh, who she finally spotted at one end with Maya helping set up drinks for everyone. She walked towards him, and he finally saw her and walked towards her, to welcome her with a big hug.
"Madhu! You're here, finally!"
"Sorry, there was a lot of work. Hey Maya. Happy birthday. Here's something for you." Madhu handed her a gift package containing a purse she had picked up for Maya.
"Thank you so much!" Maya smiled hugging Madhu. "See RK, your girlfriend is so much better than you. She got me a present!"
"Arey, it's from both of us!" RK said and grinned. Madhu looked at RK questioningly, but he gestured her to keep quiet.
"Would you like something to drink, Madhu?"
"No, I am good."
"Ok, why don't you get something to eat?" RK urged Madhu to sit and eat something while he continued helping Maya with the arrangements.
Madhu went and sat at a corner, sipping some juice. She didn't know many people here, and was feeling quite alone. Rohan was occupied with what looked like some of RK, Rohan and Maya's college friends, and Ria had gone on a family vacation and had not come. Her eyes were solely on RK though, for the most part, but he was quite occupied. Soon they all had dinner and then it was midnight - time for cutting the cake. They all huddled around the cake, as Maya cut it, and fed Rishabh who also fed her back. Then RK pulled out the pendant he had got for Maya and she insisted he made her wear it then. Madhu, standing at the other end of the table quietly watched. Suddenly one of their college friends, Nitin, who was taking all the pictures, said "RK come closer to your girlfriend, I need to take a good close-up shot with the gift" gesturing at Maya and RK.
Madhu was startled. There was a moment of awkward silence when Rohan jumped in and said, pointing towards Madhu, smiling to cover up somewhat
"His girlfriend is right there Nitin, and yes you should definitely take their close up pictures later."
Nitin was shocked. He awkwardly looked at Madhu and then back at Maya and RK "Oh..sorry...I thought..."
"But for now, come here take this awesome shot of Nisha and me." Rohan continued in order to diffuse the situation. The attention moved to their hilarious poses and soon the crowd dispersed as everyone started picking up a piece of cake.
Madhu, though, was still stunned, standing at her place. It was probably just a misunderstanding, but what irked her was that to a stranger who did not know all of them that well, it seemed more plausible that Maya was RK's girlfriend, not her. Caught in her pensive thoughts, she slipped out to the balcony, not wanting to attract attention. A few minutes later Rohan followed her there.
"What are you doing here alone, Madhu?"
"Nothing..." she quickly recovered from her thoughts "just tired. Came here to take a break."
"Okay. Do you want some drinks?"
"No, thanks. I don't drink."
"Okay. Listen I am sorry about Nitin's comment earlier." Madhu looked up at Rohan a little surprised, then covered up. "Oh no, it's no big deal."
"Come on Madhu, I saw your face. But it was a honest mistake. Nitin just came last week from US. We haven't been in touch at all, but he called when he came here and I invited him over. He doesn't know you yet. And in college, for a while, we used to tease RK that Maya was his girlfriend, even though she was dating Hemant at the time. It was just to make fun of the fact that he was so shy around girls."
"It's ok Rohan. I understand."
"In that case, let's go in and enjoy the fun. I think they have all settled to play cards."
Madhu and Rohan found their way back in, where everyone had settled in. A few people had left, and there were only Rohan, RK, Madhu, Nisha, Maya and Nitin left, who were all going to crash here for the night anyway.
Seeing Madhu RK called out "Madhu, where were you? I was looking for you everywhere. Come, sit next to me. Maybe then I would start winning." RK pulled Madhu to sit next to him and gave her a short peck on the cheek, while Rohan went and joined the game as well. He was already a little drunk, but other than Nisha, most of them were drinking quite heavily now.
Madhu watched the game for a bit, but soon her mind was lost in her thoughts. RK's focus was on the game and the others, so Madhu sat back and watched everyone. Watching Maya and RK, their behavior with each other, their level of physical comfort, their private jokes, Madhu for the first time felt an active resentment towards Maya. Anybody who saw them together tonight could have mistaken them to be dating, and that thought hurt Madhu. Feeling uncomfortable, she stood up and got herself some diet coke, and slipped next to where Nisha was sitting at the other end of the room. She tried to distract herself by making small talk with Nisha, but her attention kept going back to RK, who himself was paying no attention to her. He was getting drunk by the minute, and so were Rohan and Maya and RK's loud behavior started irking her. After some time, when they were taking a break between games, she went to RK and softly asked him not to drink any more as he was already very drunk. But he refused in a loud voice, "I want to drink Madhu. It's a partyyy!"
"Enough Rishu, you have had a lot already. You would feel sick" she tried to explain.
"Mayaaa...see it is your birthday and Madhu is not letting me drink." Rk called out to Maya who came and side-hugged RK, joining his protest "Nooo...today we all drink...we all partyyy"
"Yeyyy..." RK and Maya screamed, and soon got back to their game and their alcohol. It was almost 2 am, Madhu by now felt extremely pained and abandoned, and told Nisha that she was really tired from her day and was going to go to sleep. She changed her clothes and lay down in the bedroom. The noises from the living room still reached her, but at least now she could shed the tears that she had been controlling all evening. She cried bitterly with pain, feeling worse than she had felt in a long time. The way RK ignored her, the proximity between him and Maya, Nitin's comment earlier in the evening...everything stinged her. At almost 345 am, there was a knock on her door. She pretended to be asleep at first, but opened her eyes when she saw Rohan and Nitin supporting RK in the room. They were all drunk, but RK was sloshed.
"Here, take care of your guy." Rohan said.
"Why have you brought him here? You should have kept him with yourself."
"Naah, he's yours. Anyway, everyone's completely sloshed. Maya has already puked. We are going to sleep." Rohan said and soon left. Nobody was in any condition to argue.
Madhu helped RK on the bed, took off his shoes and tried to make him go to sleep. But he was neither awake, nor asleep, mumbling incoherent things and feeling restless. He kept trying to get up and Madhu had to hold him down in her lap to get him to stay. She gave him water, tried to make him vomit, then tried everything to make him sleep, but he kept mumbling and moving unless Madhu held him down.
"Don't..go" RK was apparently mumbling. Madhu hugged him tight and said "I am here. Go to sleep." No matter how angry she was at the time, it didn't diminish her care for her Rishabh.
"Thank..you..Maya.." RK mumbled, and fell into a deep breath. Hearing Maya's name jolted Madhu, and she tried to push RK on the pillow, but he got restless again, so Madhu let him be, even though tears streamed down her cheeks. 20 minutes later, RK asked for water. The water in the room was finished, so Madhu pushed RK to the pillow and got up to get some water from the kitchen.
The house had quieted down by now. Rohan and Nitin had passed out in the living room. While walking back from the kitchen towards the room, Madhu stopped as she heard voices from the adjoining bedroom.
"Come on di. Sleep now. Sleep." It was Nisha. The door was open and Madhu peeped in to see if she was ok. Maya was clearly drunk, and was snuggling to her sister.
"Sleep...ok...RK...I love you...Rishh" she mumbled.
"Shh...sleep..."Nisha patted down Maya, but at that instant she looked up. Her eyes met Madhu's , and held the gaze for a minute. Finally, Madhu turned and went back to her room. She gave RK the water, and sat holding RK in her lap so he could sleep, but her own heart was breaking down into a million pieces. It was almost 6 am by the time RK had fallen into a deep sleep and Madhu could finally push him to a pillow. As for her, her pain was too great for sleep to come in, but out of sheer exhaustion, she slept until 7. Then, she woke up, got dressed and called a cab. She wanted to leave before others were up. She could not bear to stay here another minute.
She was going to leave when RK woke up. "Madhu...Madhu...where are you going?" He asked seeing her dressed up. His head was pounding.
"I have a deadline this weekend, I need to go to the office." She said and quickly rushed out of the room, not having any energy for a conversation. RK was too hungover to stop her, and slept back.
Outside in the living room, Maya was up as well, sipping lime water. Madhu couldn't bring herself to face her, but did not know how to avoid her. She lowered her gaze, mumbled that she was leaving for work, and tried to quickly leave when Maya called out
"How is RK?"
"You can find out yourself. I am sure he would be fine with you." Madhu blurted before she could control herself. She hadn't meant to snap, but she did. Unwilling to engage in anything more at this moment, she walked out.
*********************************************
It wasn't even 9 am and it was a Saturday, yet Madhu was in her office. Somehow she didn't want to go home, even though she had no plans to be in office. She just wanted to be somewhere where she didn't lose control of herself. She stared at her screen, unable to read a word, in a valiant but losing battle to keep the storm inside her at bay. Finally, after an hour, she couldn't take it and she walked out to the corridor, to a quiet spot on the staircase, and let the tears go. The emotional whirlpool inside her was physically hurting her, and crying didn't help, but Madhu couldn't stop. She felt as lost, as abandoned, as lonely and as much of an outsider as she had ever been. At this instant, she hated Maya. She had never felt hatred before for anyone, and even now, she didn't want to, but she still hated her because she was taking away from Madhu the one thing that meant everything to her, the one thing that was the reason for her being alive - RK's love. She didn't hate RK, but overnight, RK had become no different than her parents to Madhu - someone, whose love, she felt, she could only reach out for but no matter how hard she tried, she would never got.
A cup of coffee in front of her eyes broke Madhu's miserable chain of thought. It was Vikram. She looked up at him and saw an understanding look in his eyes. She wanted to wipe off her tears, but realized there was no point. Vikram had probably already seen enough. She took the coffee, and tried to compose herself. Vikram sat down next to her, but said nothing.
"I am sorry" Madhu blurted, but Vikram didn't say anything in response. He wanted to let Madhu feel comfortable enough, and say whatever she wanted to say, without feeling pushed.
After a few minutes Madhu asked "How come you are in office today?"
"I was always planning to come. I thought you were planning to spend the day with RK and your friends."
The mention of previous night's party brought another tear that ran down her cheek. Vikram wiped it off, then asked "Fight with Rishabh?"
"No..yess..."Madhu struggled. "I...I am losing him Vikram. I can't live without him...but I am losing him" Madhu broke down.
Vikram hugged her lightly to give her some comfort. After a minute, he asked "Look at me Madhu. Do you love him?" Madhu nodded in response. "And Rishabh, does he love you?" She hesitated, as if unsure, then nodded slightly. "I think so"
"Then don't lose him, okay. Fight for him."
Destiny waited with gasped breath to find out if Madhu would, indeed, fight for her love, or if she would, in fact, do nothing like she had done all her life and let Maya take Rishabh away from her.
