In Muslims it is common, and even among some Hindu communities, cousin marriages do happen especially in some south Indian communities. Although the practice is becoming lesser in modern times.

I think cousin marriage has been quite prevalent in tamil/telugu communities for a long time..but it has reduced considerably at recent times.I am a tamil speaking south indian and have attended quite a few weddings of this sort...either maternal cousin( child of mother's brother) or paternal cousin ( child of father's sister) does not matter. Sometimes even a younger maternal uncle (mother's brother) becomes the groom..it happens mostly in rural regions.

I don't know anyone who has married their relative. It's frowned upon from where I come from, especially due to the genetic abnormalities that occur when the gene pool is mixed so frequently. It's interesting for me to see it in this show as it's a foreign concept to me.
