All the saints mentioned in this epic poem are historical persons and not mythical Therefore, this is a recorded history of the 63 Saiva saints called as Nayanmars (devotees of Lord Siva), who attain salvation by their unflinching devotion to Siva(Mahadeva). If one wants to know what is devotion, what will be the actions and state of devotees, and want to dwell in the great nector of love, the best place to go is periya purANam. If you want to feel the great heights that love for the Lord, who is the pure form of love, can take then read the periya purANam not just for the sake of reading, but by putting yourself in the state of the nAyanAr whose life is described as you read. Feel it. Even for a person who never ever tasted the honey of devotion, it should give a great experience. If a person does not get bhakthi even after reading periya purANam you can say for sure that involvement was missing from his/her part.
It is a nector that will give you the immortal love, drink it.
It is a perennial river of love that will make the lands of your mind fertile, irrigate with it.
It is a ocean that will get you pearl heaps of coveted qualities, dwell in it.
It is a sharp sword that will cut off the bonds to make you feel the bliss of freedom, hold it strong.
It is a teacher that tells morals of life, make yourself a rock of discipline.
It is a historical information resource, develop your knowledge with that.

The Tamil Devotional Classic Periya Puranam or "The Great Epic" by Sekkizhaar is the saga of the sixty three Nayanmars or servitors of the Lord, who not only lived for Him but adored Him in delightfully distinct ways. Lord Shiva whom these Saiva-Siddhantins worshipped is not a sectarian deity but the supreme creator, preserver and destroyer of the Universe, who comes in human form from time to time and 'plays' with these servitors when their devotion gets incandescent. These Nayanmars are of both the sexes and of all ages, and range from tribal hunters to emporers of vast domains. Caste and community, wealth and status do not count with them, even as they do not with the Lord. The trials and tribulations they cheerfully undergo and the incredible sacrifices they make for the Lord's sake take our breadth away. To persue their stories is to inhale the air of sanctity and blessedness. Sri G.Vanmikanathan, who has rendered the highlights of the original epic from Tamil to English with a racy running commentary, is an experienced literateur who has a number of other devotional works to his credit.
