CHAPTER 37
Vickram sat in the den with Adi as they began setting up a chess game they were about to play. Since the building project was on hold there was not much they could do until her herd from the lawyer soon. It was almost a week now. Adi was much recovered and Vickram thought it was time to bring up what was on his mind a few days now. However he was sure Adi would not take it well.
As he set up the board he was wondering how best to approach this conversation.
"Oh wow chess...can I play?" Shanti said as she came running into the den to join them. She was smiling broadly.
"I thought you were with Naani Maa?" Vickram said.
"I was but then some ladies came and they all were talking...and I got bored..." She said as she watched him set up the board..."Can I play?" She asked again.
Vickram looked at Adi who was smiling at her and back at Shanti.
"Well see I already said I was going to play with your Adi bhaiya" he said "And this game is a bit different then how you and I play.." He said
"How?" She asked
"Well for starters we follow the rules and not move where we want to when we want to..." He chuckled, referring to the way she would play with him.." He said. As Adi laughed.
"I can follow rules.." She declared innocently. "I'll play too..." She insisted looking at him with those big brown eyes
"Ok here is what we will do...you can play for me but you move the pieces when I say and how I say it deal?" He asked.
"Deal!." She nodded. As she sat on his lap.
"OK...Now move the middle pawn up." Vickram said as the game began. She took the pawn and moved it the required two spaces.
"very good...now can you remember when you move it up two spaces and when we move it once?" he asked.
"Yes two spaces the first move only!." She said.
"very good shorty..." Adi said as he moved one of his pieces. She smiled as she continued moving the pieces as Vickram instructed.
"So Adi..." Vickram said after a while as the game continued. "I've been thinking maybe it would be best if you go back to the city once you feel 100%...I mean it makes no sense all of us herewhen this is still tied up for the while."
Aditya looked at his uncle in shock. Where did that come from. "Mamaji...what are you saying...how can I leave you alone..." He began.
"Move the knight right..." Vickram said to Shanti. "No No Adi...I know you won't want to ...but here me out, see this temple I have a feeling that this little stall tactic is just the tip of the iceberg...he will have more tricks up his sleeve..."
"Exactly Mamaji." Adi said as he made his move. "Then I should be here to help you..."
"I understand that Son, but Adi I know how to handle him ... whatever he will think to throw at us...and to deal with them sometimes you have to stoop to their level. I can handle them, and it's not that you can't...but son we also have business in Delhi and I think if you go back there you can see about what needs to be done, not to mention the house . Here what is it, we will just be sitting here until this is resolved, and it is bad business if we leave everything up to Secretaries and administrative staff na." Vickram said. ."Move the bishop three spaces up" He said to Shanti
"But Mamaji..." Adi began. "that was the whole point of me being here...so that you would not have to come back here and relive the past...and now you are asking me to leave you here...no." He said.
"I know that was the plan, but the truth is this Mandir will not get done unless I am here. And son, it will in our best intrest if our associates and clients see someone in charge in the city. I know you and Amrita can handle things there very efficiently. Please understand."
"I still don't think I should leave..."
"We will be fine. And if anything happens we will call you pronto...you know that." Vickram said convincingly. "Think about it practically it makes no sense all of us here soing nothing , dose it?"
Adi sighed..."I guess you are right. OK...I will talk to Amrita and we'll go back...'
"Thank you." Vickram said relieved. He knew Adi would see it his way.
"Checkmate!" Shanti declared drawing both their attention.
"What no way!" Adi said looking at the bord.apprently she had moved Vickrams knight and took one of Adi pawns.
"but I took it!" She said. "You lost!' she insisted.
Vickram laughed. "No baby, you took his pawn...checkmate is if you got his King cornered. Right now his king is safe." He explained.
"So we didn't win?" She asked.
"No yet.." He said
"Cheater..." Adi teased.
"I am not!" she pouted.
Yeah yeah whatever...' He said making faces at her.
"Daddy!...I am not tell him..." She complained.
"Ahh haa cry baby..." Adi teased as he made his move
"Am not!..you are!" she said, looking at him angrily. Adi loved teasing her to the point she got mad at him and she in turn acts as though he was a five year old. No one got into it because two minutes after she would be his best friend again.
Vickram leaned down and whispered something in her ear. She smiled as she moved her queen straight up to his King. "Checkmate!" She said again. Adi looked at the move seeing that he was indeed cornered.
:"Ahhh shoot.!" He said with a crestfallen look on his face. Shanti laughed. "We won.! We won."
"Yes we did! " Very good!" Vickram said.

"Sugni beta...you have to do something about your clothes." Maa Thakur said after the women from the village had left. They had come to inform Godavari Thakurine that there were having a two day prayers in the local temple , the first day the Thakurine would come and offer prayers for their families, and the next day they would be joined by their husbands and sons to offer a small prayer together. It was an annual event
During their visit they were all looking at Sugni strangely more or less because of her strange attire or maybe because they probably recognized her from 7 years ago , whatever it was hard to tell as thy would sure wait until they were out of the house to start gossiping. But Maa Thakur recognized the looks that passed on their faces to well. Speculation, conclusions, and she knew curiosity about it all.
"I am sorry Maaji...in the rush I did not think to pack any Sarees." Sugni said. It was true, she had totally forgotten that Maaji had insisted that Amrita wear the Saree's while staying here. And in her haste all she throw in the suitcases were her everyday clothes.
"I know...but this is just the beginning ...curiosity will drive them and they will find one excuse or the other to visit to see what is going on here..."
"Don't worry Sugni...I have a drawer full of untouched Saree's you can have them" Amrita said. "Ohh and there is a mela next week na...you can get some there I am sure."
Thanks Amu...I will" Sugni said gratefully.
That evening during dinner Vickram informed them about his conversation with Adi and that they agreed for him and Amu to go back to the city.
"Hmm Yes beta...I think that would be for the best." Maa Thakur agreed. "No need to abandon the offices..." She said
"Wait...does this mean we will miss the Mela?" Amrita asked looking at them. "I heard so much about it from the servants...I wanted to see it and the special pujas..." she said.
"What Puja?" Vickram asked.
"You know the Annual thakur's prayer they have at the temple with the wives then the families...I got an invitation today for us to take part." Maa Thakur explained.
"Ohh well, you can go after no problem by that time Adi will be back to normal." Vickram said
Amrita smiled she really wanted to see it. She did not get to see much around the village as it was since they got here; this was her last chance to see it up close.

"No No ...wait!" Maa Thakur said two days later "Sit.." She said as she moved to the dresser. Sugni Sat on the bed. Talking the Pallu section of the Saree she gathered it as she made a pleasted patterned and deftly fastened it with a pin.
"See much more neat and looks much more elegant." She said. "And your hair...no no this pony tail has to go." She said as she undid it.
Sugni sat there trying not to fidget as Maa Thakur did her hair. She changed three Sarees already as each one Maa Thakur had a problem with , until she herself selected a pink and green colored Saree that was elegantly worked up but very light.
"You are Thakur Vickram Singh's wife Sugni the daughter in law of this home...you have to look it." Maa Thakur said to her. "All eyes will be on you today."
Sugni swallowed. She felt as though she was being prepared to be paraded in front of all.
"Maaji.?" Sugni said "I don't know about all this." She said nervously.
"It's nothing, just go to the temple offer the prayer do the arti, that is the easy part. But I assure you every one will be watching the way you walk, talk even breath! You just do it with your head held high and walk out the same way !" She said to her. as she finished fixing her hair.
"There you look perfect!" Sugni looked at the mirror at herself, she looked different. Dressed in a saree, with matching jewelry and bangles in her hands... she looked like one of the thakurines , with her hair hanging loose instead of tied up as it usually was.
"Your first endevour as a Thakurine...lets make it memorable hmm?" Maa Thakur said.
Sugni sighed. "I don't know maaji...what if I mess up."
"You won't. I know." She looked at Sugni in the eye. "Sugni there is something I want to tell you..." She said softly.
What is it Maaji?" Sugni said looking at how serious she was.
"Well...you remember that album you found...and you wanted to know who was that girl and what she was doing with Vijai..." She began... "Well ..I-I think you should know..."
"Maaji..." Sugni said stopping her. "It's Ok I know who she is , Kuhu and that she was married to Vijai..Vickram told me after I accidentally found her photo in his study. He told me the story." She said.
"He did?" She asked
Sugni nodded. "I am sorry...I know you told me to leave it alone...but I could'nt..." She confessed
"Well it's good you know...I guess as you are here now. You know he won't let Vickram live here in peace...and I know you might hear things . but beta whatever they try to tell you , or throw at us...it should not affect us hmm..."
"It won't maaji I just hope that I can live up to your expectations of being your bahu..." She said
"I am sure you will..." Gohavari said.
"Ok let me go finish changing and I will meet you downstairs." She said as she left.
Sugni sighed ...she could do this. No big deal. All that mattered to her any way was going and praying for the well being of her family.
The door opened and Vickram walked in as he looked at her.
"Ohhh my my my...You look absolutely amazing." He said softly as he walked up to her , his eyes taking in her dress. "It suites you." He said
"What?" She asked
"The Thakurine look...just one thing missing."he said.
"What is it?" She looked at herself in the mirror...she had on everything..."No nothing is?" She said.
"Yes this..." He said as he reached over and took up a small container of sindoor. Taking a pinch it placed in on her forhead .
"Perfect."He whispered. Sugni looked at him as she smiled, ahe cheeks growing pink. As he continued.
"Jalate hai hum apne dil ko diye ki tarah...
Teri Zindagi main khushiyon ki roshni lane ke liye
Seh jate hai har chubhan ko apne pairon tale
Teri Rahon main phool bhichane ke liye.."
"Meaning?" She asked.
"Meaning ... My heart burns just like a diya...just to bring the light of happiness into your life,
I would tolerate all thorns in my feet, just to spread flowers onto your path"
"That is beautiful..."She said "And so sweet."
"It is true..." he said caressing her cheeks.
"Sugni???" Maaji's voice came from down stairs.
"Time to go..." She said. He nodded as he waled down stairs.
"I still think I should go with you all." He said as they went down.
"Vickram...there is no need, only ladies there today...tomorrow you will be joing us na. Don't worry Rattu is driving us and he won't let anything happen, plus it is daylight. We'll only b gone a couple of hours ...so stop worrying ." Maa Thakur said.
"O K. be careful..." He said as they left.
The short trip to the temple was uneventful. As they came out of the van . Amrita and Shanti was looking around wide eyed at all the activities of the women arriving and going inside.
"Oh My Sugni look at them...wow I have seen less expensive dresses at ball rooms. Is this a prayer or a fashion show?" She asked. Sugni laughed. A bit of both. I mean look at us..." She pointed out.
"Hmm..." Amrita nodded. Their attention was drawn to one of the Thakurine who had come to the house as she greeted them.
"So happy you could make it, Godavari Thakurine...please come come..." She greeted.
"Thank you!." Maa Thakur said politely as they all walked into the temple. Everyone seemed polite to them for the most part. Sugni ignored all the weird stares. and whispered she was seeing.
Instead she concentrated on the pundit who was reciting the puja , after which he asked the eldest female member of each family to come forward one by one and offer a little prayer on behalf of the family.
One by one the rest of them went, and so did Maa Thakur while Sugni Amrita and Shanti looked on.
Sugni attention was caught by the snickering of voices directly behind her head...
"I remember her...She sold herself to the highest bidder...che che che!!! Can you believe it...A bedni...in this temple...and you all are allowing it...Who invited them anyway."
"shh...she'll hear you...are She is married now to Vickram Singh and a Thakurine... Thakurine Mauli Shamsher Singh invited them what can we do..."
"So what... A bedni is always a bedni...shame on them...and look they act like nothing is wrong...this puja is sacred and they are spoiling it." the voice said. There were a few murmurs of agreement. Sugni turned behind to look at the group. One of them was staring daggers in her direction.
"Some people na...enjoy bringing shame to their family." The lady said looking Sugni up and down. She turned to look at the other women. Sugni turned back to look in front as she closed her eyes and swallowed.
