Chapter 8

With news of Reva's return the next day , Sugni observed that the whole atmosphere in the house changed. Ramu kaka who was normally a jovial man became more serious and jittery. The other servants also moved about like they were walking on eggshells. Even Maa Thakur was acting different, a bit more harsh and strict about how things are done.

Sugni was kept busy cleaning out and fixing Reva's room. It was strange to her that Reva and Vickram actually had different rooms. She herd the gossip of the other servants , Ramu Kaka also talked about it. That the thakurine was a very difficult person, and that since they returned Vickram and Reva lived basically as strangers under one roof.

Sugni found that sad, because Vickram Thakur Mallick was such a warm and friendly person, and according to the others Reva Thakurine was the total opposite. If any one who deserved a nice wife it would be him.

Sugni's second meeting with Reva was no less disastrous than her first one. As had become some what customary Sugni was helping Maa Thakur to prepare dinner, and was sent out to the store house to get some potatoes. As the menu for the dinner was all of Reva's favorite dishes according to maa Thakur.

Maa Thakur Sugni found was a woman of few words, and could be a bit harsh at times, but as far as Sugni could see she treated every one fairly. Like her son she was not afraid to get her hands dirty, and seemed like she loved being in the kitchen, she took pride in overseeing that the meals were prepared to Vickram's liking.

So it was strange to Sugni, that what she heard from the other servants, and even the way she saw Vickram speak of Reva, that Maa Thakur acted as though Reva was the best "bahu" in the house, going out of her way to make sure everything was perfect for her arrival.

Rich people and their rich ways she guessed as she retrieved the potatoes and made her way back into the kitchen; that was when she saw her. Reva was all decked up in an expensive Sari with jewelry that reminded Sugni of a bride. She was standing in the kitchen observing everything with the air of a queen overlooking her subjects.

As she walked through the door into the kitchen , Sugni placed the potatoes in the sink , and took a knife to start peeling them. .."Excuse me? Who are you?" Reva asked her, coming to stand closer to Sugni.

"Umm…Sorry, good evening Reva THakurine, I am Sugni." She answered respectfully.

"Uhh , Reva Sugni is new she will be working in place of Chanda, she is on leave to have her baby.' Maa Thakur explained to Reva., who turned to her mother in law with a look on her face that said she was not pleased with the news.

"Ohh and no one called to tell me about this? Why not?" Reva asked.

"Well Reva it all happened suddenly…" Maa Thakur began but was interrupted by Rava again

"What Maa!? It could have waited until I came back. What was the hurry? If Sahib knew about you going behind my back.."

"Vickram knows about it , bahu …he approved." Maa Thakur said.

"Really …with out telling me?, how can you hire any one with out telling me!" She said obviously getting agitated. "No no No …Chanda has to come back " She turned to Sugni, "You girl, you can't be in here. The kitchen is only for trusted servants…Maa you know this why you have her in here?" She said.

Sugni stood there awkwardly not sure what to do. Vickram had said that when she gets agitated to do what she said. Maa Thakur she could see was getting uncomfortable with the situation.

"I –I am sorry Reva Thakuine," Sugni said. "I was just in here because everyone has been busy. I… I will leave…" She said. Maa Thakur gave Sugni a greatful look.

"Hmm… yes Chanda will be back, you are not needed in here go!" She said. Sugni left to make her way back to the guest house.

"Where are you going?" Sugni turned to see that Reva had followed her out. Haai sita maaiya ..what now?

"I am going to the guest house." She answered.

"Why?" She asked

" I stay there?"

"You stay there?, you should be staying in the servant's quarters… who told you you can stay in there?" She asked.

"Reva…Listen …forget all this let's just go back inside and finish dinner, Vickram will be home soon." Maa Thakur said.

"What you mean forget all this….is she a guest?… my God I am gone for two days and you people turn this house upside down , having servants in the guest house! " She said disgusted.

"Look the running of this house is my duty , and you know what …She is not staying here. In Fact…" Reva decided. " You girl get your stuff and leave …now." She said. ..Taking Sugni's hand and leading her to the guest house.

Sugni looked at maa Thakur for some guidance , but she said nothing. "What are you looking at her for..go get your clothes and leave…." She said…"And I am watching you don't try anything smart!." Reva stood at the door of the guest house as Sugni packed her meager belongings. She walked out the guest house with her Suitcase in her hand.

"Ramu Kaka!" Reva called , he came. "I want you to clean out this place…I don't know what kind of people they make stay here!, Let sahib come….I will deal with him!" She said.

"You can leave now!" Reva told Sugni.

Sugni walked down the path to the gate. Now what? She did not want to go back to her uncles, she could imagine what a laughing stock that would be. "Haai Sita Miya…where do I go?" she asked as she closed her fist around the small key chain, that had in the past week become her source of solace, her talisman….

Vickram, left the fields at 5 P.M to make his way back home. The rains came and brought with it double work,and a few damages, with seeds and plots being washed away in the heavy downpour. But all of this was part of the ups and downs of farm life and he moved according to mother nature. He was grateful that the damage was not to extensive.

He was anxious to get home. The fact that he did not get any phone calls from home, he took as a good sign. Maybe his mother was able to handle the situation with Sugni. Vickram sighed tiredly , his week long reprieve was over, now it was back to the to dealing with Reva and her daily tantrums.

He hoped that she would be busy in her redecorating project and at least he could have some peace in the house. He began consulting his lawyer and start the process now so that he would have everything prepared, and was told that would take a few months as well, the cort process can be long. Vickram thought maybe that worked in his favor while Dr. Suman helped Reva with the transition. So he had had the papers filed this week and was now waiting for the lawyer to tell him how to proceed.

Vicram's attention was distracted by the sight of Sugni walking down the lane, she was watching the ground , carrying her suitcase. "Hey bhagwan!" He sighed… Welcome back Reva. Stopping the tractor at her side , "Hop in." He said.

"Thakur mallick…I can't go back…" Sugni began

"Shh I know what happened, Reva decided to play thakurine and throw her power around. I'll deal with her …I am sorry about this Sugni… come on." He said with a look of anger on his face.

Sugni looked at him, she really did not want to be another source of tension for him. He already helped her. Maybe she could go to Champa's…

"Thakur Mallick….I think it would be best if I go back." She said

"Back to where? " He said. "Sugni every one of them is expecting just that to happen. Don't let Reva's foolish behavior stop you." He sighed. "Look, I have been dealing with her for ten years now. She never makes anything easy. "

"I don't want to be any trouble…" She said. Sighing Vickram jumped of the tractor to come stand in front of her.

"Sugni look at me… you are not any trouble…and you are not leaving just because my wife is on some power trip. This has nothing to do with you , than it has to do with her making my life more difficult." She looked at him. Not sure what to say . it was obvious things were not all happy here.

"Look you trusted me when you left your home…you think I would bring you here if I felt I could not protect you? You think I would do this to you?" he said. She shook her head.

"Come back and I'll straighten it all out..I promise after today she won't be a problem for you! Please." He said.

"Ok!" She agreed for some reason she could not refuse him. Taking her suitcase he helped her back in the tractor and soon they set of back to the Haveli.

Vickram entered the house with Sugni in tow. Reva who was in the process of setting the table spotted them as they entered. She came to meet them in the hall way.

"You! Did'nt I ask you to leave?" She said looking at Sugni…She noticed Vickram holding the suitcase .."Ohh I get it, you had to go with your sob story to Sahib so he brought you back…well your cheap tricks are not going to work.." She started

Sugni looked at her in shock. As she shook her head.

"REVA!" Vickram said, resting the suitcase down to come to stand in front of her. "What is wrong with you? Since when have you become so rude and and insulting to others?, I was the one who brought Sugni here…for the while she is working in this house…and you will not in the future try to send her away, if you have a problem with her tell me about it, but you will not say anything to her ..is that understood?" he said looking at Reva sternly.

"But Sahib…It's my call to hire people to work here.." Reva said..

" Yes it is, but his is my house and I can also hire who I think is fit to work here., am I right Madam?" He asked.

"Yes" Reva said reluctantly.

"Good… no more arguments on this. Sugni is here to stay , that's it!"

'Ramu Kaka!" Reva called Ramu who came in., she was staring daggers in Sugni's direction.

"Yas Maalkin."

"Please take Sugni back to the servant quarters." She said.

"No…Ramu Kaka Sugni will go back to the guest house where she was." Vickram intervened.

"But Sahib that is for guest!" Reva said

"Sugni is my guest…" Vickram Said…"Sugni go with Ramu Kaka, Ok." He said Silently Sugni followed Ramu kaka back to the guest house, feeling uncomfortable.. She wondered if she should have come back here.

"ThankGod you are back, beti!" Ramu kaka said as they walked to the guest. "I knew Mallick would never let her do such a thing." He said. Behind her Sugni could here raised voices. She looked back at the main house.

"Haaye Sita Miya what did I do" Sugni whispered.

"Nothing, beti!" Ramu answered…"that was going to happen any way. She would have found a reason to pick a fight with him, you were just an excuse. There is hardly an evening here where Mallick can spend it peacefully." Ramu Shook his head. "I would not wish a wife like her on my worst enemy, I tell you." Sugni looked at him as he opened the door and handed her the keys.

Vickram watched as Sugni left with Ramu to go back to the guest house. The sound of clapping hands made him look to see Reva smiling sarcastically …"Wah Wah Vickram, very good…treating servants as guest now, insulting me in front of some two bit girl…very good! But what else can I expect from a man like you!" She said.

'Reva …please…you just got back…can we have one day of peace around here?" He asked

'Well we would have …if you were not so keen on showing me down on front of your precious servants….My God Vickram…I swear you think you are some kind of advocate for these people." Reva said. "Always defending them, have them running around here, like they own this place. Always taking their side..and now having them move into the guest house… What's next soon you will have them in the same house with us!" She said scathingly. "Oh but of course you are Saint Vickram Singh right?"

Vickram looked at her , shaking his head in disbelief . Was she really that stuck up and heartless.?? Yes she was. And he was seeing her personality had nothing to do with her illness.

"Shut up…Reva just stay quite…first of all these are the people that make your life comfortable , so showing them some compassion would not take anything from you. And I keep telling you time and again, I will not allow you to play with their lives and livelihood! Just because I put up with your behavior , does not mean I condone it !" He said

"What the hell does that mean?" She shouted.

" Don't shout! " Vickram raised his voice, his patients with her just about run out. "it means I have had enough of this…you treating these people like slaves …I am warning you one last time…I catch you being underhanded with ANY of them here, you and your brother will have the pleasure of doing their jobs your selves…as I will make sure you have no one here to boss around …understand?"

Reva stared at him. What was this? Why was he talking back to her in this manner, normally he would just stand and listen to her rant befor walking off. No no no…this is not how it works. Needing time to process this new behavior in him, she stayed quite. Vickram left her as he went upstairs.

Neeranjan came into the Hall way from the dining area where he was listening to the exchange.

"What's with him?" He asked.

"I don't know, but it's not good…" She said. Definitely not good.
