OMG Vinnie, what a superb, amazing and romantic chapter. I absolutely loved it. Finally reality struck Vikram and he has begun to acknowledge his feelings for Sugni and the way that happened was just so romantic, his concern for her injury, it was like he was in more pain than her😳 . I couldn't help blushing😳. I am eagerly waiting for him to confess his love for her and Reva's reaction when she finds out about this new development will be priceless.

So Thakur saab has finally realised how he is feeling about Sugni. Unlike original PHS this is not going to be easy for him to accept and even harder to do anything about as he is not a free man and all hell will break loose if Reva has the slightest inclination.

Chapter 10.

Sugni left the kitchen a few nights later her eyes going to the outside patio where she knew Vickram would usually sit in the evenings. They would exchange a few words , he would ask about her day, and they would chat for a bit. But ever since the day when he bandaged her hand, she was lucky if she got a glimpse of him. She knew he was busy but still she missed not seeing him.

She herd him though, the arguments from the main house. Reva mallikin , seemed like she could not wait for him to get home to pick a fight with him. The woman could find the most ridiculos things to argue about Sugni found. Like yesterday,when she was cleaning the kitchen Reva's voice carried into the kitchen as she was insisting that Vickram fire Ramu Kaka if he could not do his job. She said that Vickram should not pay him for doing nothing, to which Vickram said that Ramu was at the age to retire, and he was lucky he was still willing to supervise and train the new workers that he hired. He made it clear that Ramu kaka was going to stay there with his wife.

Sugni smiled at that. Having lived and worked there for almost 50 years the old couple really had no where else to go , and at that age Sugni wondered how would they start over. But she knew her Thakur mallick would not just throw them out!

Sugni wondered if he was avoiding outside so that he would not have to listen to Reva. She could not blame him. Her heart went out to him, that could not be easy for him. Just observing it as an out sider left her feeling bad, she could imagine how he felt and he was invovled directly.

The next morning while making breakfast, Sugni heard the van start. It was early usually he would leave the haveli after having breakfast and taking something for lunch .Walking outside she saw he was getting ready to pull off.

"Thakur Mallick wait!" she said. He stopped looking at her.

"Breakfast!...you can't leave with out eating !" She said.

"Sugni…I need to get to the fields, some people.."

"What Thakur Mallick? …it is not even eight o'clock …it can wait…you can't leave on an empty stomach. Come come I will make you a fast breakfast!" she smiled.. "Please"

He stared at her…"Please" she said smiling convincingly at him

"Ok…but hurry."

"I will …come come" she said as she ran inside

Vickram walked inside , he could not tell her no. He made his way to the breakfast table. Maa Thakur was resting he was sure as she said she was unwell. He knew Sugni would be the only one in the kitchen, as Reva never got up before 9 A.M. So he decided he would skip breakfast altogether, only here he was.

He spent days avoiding her as much as he could. His mind in turmoil , over his realization that what he felt for Sugni went deeper than just concern over another human. Vickram spent days thinking about it, not that he could stop thinking about it. The thought , was like a weed in his head that kept coming back, growing and with it was some attraction every time he saw her.

He knew I was a dead end road and that it could not work for lots of reasons on both there sides. And he knew if she thought he was harboring any kind of thoughts about her like this she would run from him as fast as she can, not only run but that trust she had on him would turn into hate. That was one thing he he did not think he could bear to see in her face.

The problem was being around her he was afraid he would slip up and say or do something that would be disastrous .

"Here you go Thakkur Mallick" Gingerly resting down a plate of smoking hot food in front of him.."careful it is hot!" she said waiving her hand up and down.

"why did'nt you use a tray or something?" he asked shaking his head.

"Well I knew you were in a hurry na…and I forgot." She said chagrined .

Vickram smiled. "it's ok but you should be careful…I don't want you hurting yourself!'

"Ohh that was nothing! Thakur Mallick , but sorry if it dose not taste good…it tried to make it in a hurry, so tell me if anything is missing….Oh Lord I forgot …be right back" she said running back into the kitchen. Like a burst of energy as Vickram kept staring after her.

She came back with a pot of tea. She poured him a cup , he noticed her hand were bandaged free.

"Your hand all better?" he asked

"Yes! See." She said holding her palms out.

"Hmm" he nodded.

After a few minutes of silence , Vickram continued to have his breakfast while Sugni stood waitng to see if he needed anything else. He was doing his best to ignore her presence but that was impossible until he gave up.

"Sugni?"

"Yes?"

"please don't just stand there, its weird" It came out more harshly than he intended.

"Huh? Ohh…I am sorry." She said feeling bad. "I'll go back to the kitchen." She said turning.

"No Sugni…that is not what I meant." He said stopping her. "I meant, please join me, come on.!" He said

"Ohh no…I am not hungry yet." She said.

"Well at least have a cup of tea, and a seat! Please." He said

"OK." She said pouring her self a cup and sitting down opposite him.

Sugni observing Vickram wondering what was so different. He was some how , but she could not figure it out. She found that even though he and Reva fought and he avoided her, he never let that affect his behavior with others, he was still pleasant person, who spoke to every one in a kind and respectful manner , with an easy smile… Oh that was what was missing, that smile. Like he was troubled about something.

"Thakur Mallick?" .

"Yeah."

"Is everything ok?" She asked

"Of course, why?" he said

"Well you look worried…and I hardly see you around, is every thing good in the fields?" She asked concerned.

"Every thing is fine there…it is coming along nicely." He replied.

"then?" She asked

"Then what?"

"Then…why you look so troubled, are you feeling sick…you know running around all day is bad for your health…"

Vickram smiled. "My health is fine Sugni.." He said.. "it not that…I just have a lot on my mind these days!..that's all." He said cryptically.

"Can I help?"

Oh that was a loaded question. Can she help? She was the cause of his inner turmoil, though no fault of her own.He just had to find a way to deal with this new development on his own he guessed.

"No Sugni…I just need to straighten things out here is all." He said tapping his temple.

She nodded. Reaching over the table she placed her hand over his hand Vickram stared at it, it felt good comforting.He had to strongly stifle the urge to entwine his hand with hers, he closed his hand into a tighter fist instead, but could not bring himself to move away. She smiled. "You know when I feel confused or sad…I pray…and ask Sita Miya to help. Maybe you should . you know I will ask her myself to help you!" She said patting his hand lightly and removing it. He wanted it back.

Vickram Chuckled "ohh you have a direct connection to her?" he asked

"Yes! See every time I get in trouble…she helps me…and most of the time it is by sending you. " She said seriously. "Who knows maybe one day it will be my turn to help you…and I promise Thakur Mallick, if there is ever a day I can help you I will at all cost!" She said as she looked at him with a look of determination on her face.

"Those are strong words!. " he said

"I mean them." She smiled

"And what if I asked you to do something, against your principles?" He leaned forward looking at her intently. What? Why did he ask that ? Oh God …but now that it was out part of him wanted to know.

Sugni farrowed her brows, wondering what he was talking about. Then she smiled, and shook her head.

"No …that will never happen, because you are my friend. And not because you said it…but because I believed it in my heart. You are different. Not like the others. And I know even if I were to go down the wrong path, you will not let me do that. I trust you!" She said. She knew in her soul this man was different. May be no one else will understand it, and maybe she could not explain it. As much as she knew her mother loved her Sugni was even more sure he would never hurt her.

Vickram stared at her, again feeling that pull towards her. Like a magnet he was drawn towards her. Vickram never much thought about words like love, there was really no place for it in his life. In fact he has resigned himself to a life void of that particular emotion.

Then like a breath of fresh air in his stale stagnant life she came in. It was not his intention for this to happen, he was not looking for this . So why him, why now . What kind of twisted game was fate playing with him. Was this some sort of test?

All he knew was that the more he was around her , the more he wanted to be around her. He wanted to see her happy, he enjoyed her little quirks. He liked if he was able to make her smile. He would like to be the one to bring her those smiles always. Vickram looked at her , her soft smile, that shone through her eyes. She was beautiful not only on the out side but inside as well.

"Ill be right back…" Sugni said getting up from the table. His eyes following her until she disappeared around the kitchen. Unable to stand it anymore, he did not have the strength or will power to stay aloof with her any more, right now. So he got up and left.

"Reva!!! What are you doing?' Maa Thakur asked agast!, she was standing in the corridor outside vickrams room watching in shock as a few of the workers were busy emptying the room of its contents. She was shocked to see the bed had been dismantled , and other furniture being carted out.

" Well I am re doing his room Maaji…and I need to take everything out!"

"Dose he know you are doing this?" She asked. She was sure Vickram had no idea Reva's redecorating project would begin with him being thrown out of his own room.

"I don't have to tell him! He knows I am redecorating., Hey you , are you finished emptying the closets?" She said to one of the men.

"Yes Malkin!" the worker said dragging a couple of suitcases out into the corridor.

"Wait!...Reva you can't do this!" Maa Thakur said angrily.

"Maa come on it is just temporary just until the room is repainted and recarpeted, just two days and he can have his room back. There are lots of guest rooms here he can use in the mean time. What's the big deal.?"

"Vickram likes the room the way it is Reva… you know that. When you do things like this it will just make him more angry. Reva try and understand…you should be trying to save your marriage, not make things worse. "

"Me..I am making things worse, very good so you, like him ,blame me for everything. Both of you don't want me here!" She said.

"I never said that! , but Reva your attitude needs to change. Vickram puts up with a lot from you but you are crossing your lines here." She said.

"Since when is redecorating my husbands room crossing a line?" Reva asked.

"Since you decided to sleep in a different room!" Maa Thakur Replied. Reva looked at Maa Thakur. "Yes, you came back but since your return all you have been doing here is picking fights with him,nagging and insulting him. There is only so much Vickram will take Reva , and I think I have begged all I can for you!. He wants a divorce you know that right, you know what that means?"

Reva looked at maa Thakur, for once she looked angry and not indulgent. Hmm now she had to deal with the old woman.

"Do you even want to save this marriage?" She asked.

"What do you mean? Maaji…I am trying all that I can to keep my marriage."

"Oh I don't see it! Reva, as far as I remember husbands and wives usually share one room, yet since your return you insisted on your own. Why is that? , If you love him as you claim, and want to save your marriage? " maa Thakur asked

"OH so now I am the wrong one?" Reva asked getting irritated.

"Well it takes two hands to clap, my dear all I have seen you do here is make him miserable.!" Maa Thakur replied.

"well I am sorry, but I am not the one that changed. It is not my fault Maaji…" Reva said her eyes filling with tears. "You know when I came back I was in a bad state…the doctor told Vickram to give me time to adjust…then he came here . Maa you know I he hardly stays home …when I try to get close to him…he leaves…. What you want me to do Maa you tell me??? Seems the only way to get his attention is if I am fighting with him." Reva cried…"So I do…but Maaji believe me all I want is for my old Sahib back. You tell me…you that I stay in a separate room, but do you know if I moved into this room he would most likely move out? You See me fighting… do you know when I try to talk to him he either walks away or throw money and tell me go buy something….I tried with the shopping trip but he did not want to go…Am I wrong Maa ji?" Reva looked at her mother in law, tears spilling down her face.

"I know …I know it is my fault with my head…but Maa I try to control it…bu but I don't know wh-wh-what else to do." She buried her face in her palms as she began crying inconsolably.

Maa Thakur looked at Reva , it was true what she said. Maybe this was her way of getting his attention. Poor Reva! If she listened to Vickram he was right , if she listened to Reva she was right. And now she was confused. She did not want the divorce to happen, but Vickram was not listening to her, and she was noticing him these days, his behavior was strange and it scaring her. He was more reserved, locking himself in his room , or study. It was like he was avoiding every one.

"I understand Reva, we all went through this…it is like a curse in our lives." She said remembering her own days.

"But beti, as thakurines we learn to grin and bear our husbands disinterest, his straying, and we live proudly showing the world our strength. Even the strongest Thakurs I know would stray from time to time, and I am not saying Vickram is a saint, but you keep on like this and you might as well just keep pushing him to do that."

Reva looked at her mother lin law.

" I understand maaji …I promise I will try…but we already started with the redecorating…but I sware after this it will be our room not just his.!" She said

Maa Thakur looked at Reva…she looked like she understood, and maybe this redecorating will be a new beginning for them both. She decided to support her on this . "Ok beta…" She said. As she left to go to her room . She was tired.

Reva watched as the old woman walked away towards her room . "nice save sis!" Neeranjan said as he came out of the room. Were he was over seeing the emptying of the contents.

She left out a heavy sigh. "This old lady, is getting on my nerves. " She said wiping her tears away.

"But she has a point, when he gets home…he will be mad about that." He said indicating th e empty room."

"I know!" She laughed. "See point is…mummy dearest thinks I am doing this with good intentions, and the son thinks I am doing this because I am just plain crazy! While I am trying to save my dying marriage. …Poor me" She laughed.

"But sis…are you going to move in there with him?" Neeranjan asked.

She gave him a look of total disgust.

"Of course not!…Wait to see , my dear, my poor frustrated husband is in for a nasty surprise later…"

"don't you think you are pushing your luck?"

"No… after today Vickram's wish for a clean happy divorce will be just that…a wish!' Both of them laughed.
