It was a superb chapter Vinnie. I loved it. I just can't believe Sugni's Uncles. How can they be so heartless, to do something so terrible to your own flesh and blood . I knew they were going to try to convince Sugni to get her sardhakai done but i never imagined they would just force it on her like that. Thank god Vikram (as was expected😃😳) came in the nick of time. You know Vinnie, i am happy to see that you emphasized that a sardhakai cannot be performed unless the bedni's consent is given. Even i was not sure about this aspect in PSH.

The best part is Sugni agreeing to go with Vikram😆😳 ... i am pretty sure there will be alot of interesting developments taking place😳 . The funny part was Vikram's mother ( have to agree with Simi, her name is difficult to remember😆) thinking that Vikram brought Sugni as his bedni... I know Reva will surely try her best to create some problem or the other for Sugni so the whole Sugni, Reva, Vikram triangle will be an interesting development

You are doing an amazing job Vinnie. Each chapter is full of surprises. Can't wait for the next.

OMG - I foresee some fireworks between Vikram and Reva when Reva returns.

I get the feeling that Sugni instead of getting some sympathy will get indifference or down right cruelty from the rest of the family.

I hope Sugni discovers Reva's pretence and exposes her. That would be interesting.

I guess they were so busy in making adi sugni pair and forgot the main issue Any ways - I liked the progress.. Sugni's sardakaii been stopped By vikram and her going away with him was great move !!! Chapter 7

Two hours later Sugni had the small house all dust and cobweb free. Since it was small cleaning was not a big affair, as most of the dust came from just being packed down than anything else. The furniture were all well preserved and covered.

She was now a bit tired from her long dau and thought to just lie down and take a nap. Before she could however, Ramu Kaka came to inform her that Maa Thakur wanted to see her in the kitchen. Nervously Sugni went, she had no idea what she was going to say to Maa Thakur, she got a feeling she did not like her much.

Sugni walked into the Kitchen, where maa Thakur was preparing dinner it. "Come in Sugni..is it?"

"Yes." She said as she entered the Kitchen.

"Forgive my manners I did not offer you anything to eat or drink'I got so busy. "

It's ok ..I was not hungry'I finished cleaning the guest house." Sugni said.

"You finished?'so fast" Godavari said impressed. "Any ways after the day you had 'I am sure you did not eat'you should be hungry no?" True the last thing Sugni thought of today was food. Noticing that Godavari was cutting vegetables, Sugni began helping her. She could feel M.T.'s eyes on her. Observing her.

"I'll help you with dinner" Sugni said. They sat chopping in silence. "So how do you plan to work'I mean if you don't want to dance?" M.T. asked.

"Work in the fields"

"That is hard work"

"I don't mind'I would rather work in the fields than dance' since I was nine I started looking for work around the Haveli's" She said. M.T. looked at her..she remembered her face as that girl who came to ask for work when they came. She did good work'she also remembered how Reva acted when he broke one of the vases by mistake. She was about to intervine when Vickram came and put a stop to it.

"You seem to know Vickram well." M.T. commented casually.

"Yes, he helped my mother and me a lot. He is a good friend," Sugni smiled

"Friend?" M.T. asked looking at her.

"yes!" She went on to explain how Vickram helped out her and her mother.

Most bedni's when speaking about the Thakur family would do so with an air of reverence, fear almost. But looking at Sugni she was different she was smiling. Again something about this was not sitting right with her, she just could not figure this out. Something was telling her this girl could mean trouble .

Dinner was prepared, quickly. Godahvari again was impressed by Sugni's efficiency in the kitchen. She helped carry out the food into the dining area, while Godahvari left to clean up and call Vickram. She returned a while after to see everything set. "thank you Sugni, why don't take your food with you to the Guest house, and yes the kitchen is always open so please help yourself to whatever you like."

"Thank You maa Thakur'" Sugni said clasping her hands together as she began to go back to the Kitchen. She took a plate as she prepared to dish out her own meal.

"Sugni? Come join us for dinner." Vickram said, he was standing at the kitchen door. At first Sugni almost did not recognized him, every time she saw him he had on a suite, now he was dressed in a white kurta and he looked strange but in a good way.

"No..i-its Ok I will eat in the guest house." She said.

"nonsense , you will have dinner with us. Besides I am sure you did not eat for the day. Come on ..Come on." He said waiting. She was about to argue. It was awkward M.T. all but told her to get going and now Vickram was telling her to stay.

"No arguments'come on" he said stopping the protest he could see her forming. Slowly she followed him back into the dining room, where he pulled out a chair for her to sit. M.T. sat quietly looking at it, she did not look pleased.

"Hmmm smells good!" Vickram commented. "I heard you were the cook today."

"I just helped." She said smiling slightly. She reached over and began passing dishes to him.

Dinner was a quite affair, although Sugni was a bit uncomfortable with the glances she was receiving from M.T.

"So Vickram did you talk to Reva, when will she be back?" M.T. asked after a while.

"No'Maa she left this morning'.Yes they got there fine I spoke to Neeranjan. They will be back in a few days." Vickram said .

"So Sugni, I think the weather should start clearing up soon so we can go back into the fields soon. I am hoping we did not suffer too much damage." He said.

"I hope so to'we did have some dry wheather in between , and not constant rains." She said.

"Yes that is true. !" He nodded.

"But I think'it won't be that bad. We'll see when we get there." He said she nodded.

"Actually, Vickram'I was thinking'." M.T. said calling attention to her self.

"Well Sugni did such a great job around here, cleaning out the guest house in record time, and practically preparing the food herself. I think she would be good around here, I mean Chanda, will be taking leave soon and we will need some one to fill her spot. Sugni'you won't mind will you'working here in the Haveli instead of the hot fields?" She said looking at Sugni.

"Umm'I guess not, " Sugni said flustered. What was she supposed to say here. She did make up her mind to go out in the fields'but work was work she guessed.

"Good, it will be for the best'and Vickram don't you think this would be much better than having her go out in the scorching sun all day?" She looked at Vickram convincingly.

"Maa you know that is not wise'especially with Reva I do not want'."

"I will make sure that dose not happen again, I promise, besides she will be safer in the havlie than out where her uncles can make trouble again right" She told him, knowing he would not want to put her at risk'

After some thought Vickram sighed'"Well it is up to Sugni, what would you rather do, stay here or go to the fields'your choice." He said looking at her .

Sugni looked at both of them, something telling her that MT was trying to prevent her from going into the fields. She did not want to be the cause of any friction between them, or be any more trouble, Finally she said '"I'll stay here and help out..I don't mind." She said.

Vickram looked at his mother , he knew she was up to something, but he did not want to have an argument with her infront of Sugni, knowing she had a long day already. He did not like the idea of leaving her here with Reva who had a history of ill treating all his servants. Deciding he would take a wait and watch approach , he reluctantly agreed with his mother for her to stay and work in the house instead.

After dinner it was with relief that Sugni left the main house and returned to the guest house. She had no idea what was going on but felt it better to stay out of every ones way. Sugni looked around at the guest house. As it began sinking in to her she left her home.

Her life changed today, nothing would ever be the same again. Lying on the strange bed, in this strange room Sugni tried to get some rest , but although her body was tired her mind would not stop racing , over everything that happened.

They tried to sell her! She always knew her uncles were greedy , men but she never in her wildest dreams thought that they would actually try and sell her! IF her Maa was watching from heaven , Sugni was sure she would be hurt. Moving over to where her suitcase still sat unpacked, Sugni opened it and took out a small picture she had of her mother and her. She took it back to the bed as she hugged it close.

"Maa I did the right thing naa?" She asked. She stared at the picture for a long time, as silent tears streaked down her face. She fell asleep hugging her mother close searching for some comfort , some light in her suddenly upside down world.

The next week Sugni concentrating on getting to know the other servants and the goings on of day to day life of the Haveli. Maa Thakur handed her over to Ramu Kaka , who she instructed to show Sugni everything she needed to know. Sugni's job was to help out in the kitchen and the general light cleaning of the Haveli. It was not hard work , and she actually enjoyed keeping herself busy.

She was there for a few days and she was getting the hang of things. She was just finished cleaning up the kitchen for the night and was about to make her way back to the guest house when She spotted Vickram sitting out in the porch. He looked to be lost in thought. Sugni had not seen him much since her arrival that day , since the weather cleared up and he went back out to the fields. Since Maa Thakur dropped hints about she could have dinner with the other servants if she wished, Sugni decided it was best to leave the haveli before any such awkward situations start .

"Hey, Sugni!" Vickram said as he looked at her , he smiled. " How are you? I think I saw more of you when you were not staying here!" He said.

" Yes'you have been busy. I am ok." She said , taking a seat opposite him.

"I did ask for you at dinner , but Maa says you enjoy having dinner with Ramu and his family." He said sounding a bit disappointed.

"Hmmm" Sugni said non committedidly.

"Are you comfortable?" he asked.

"Yes Thakur Mallick I am fine. I have everything I need, thanks to you." She said earnestly.

"no you don't." he said looking at her

"What do you mean."

"Well the Sugni I know would have told me exactly how may pots she washed, how many dents they had, what Ramu kaka did for dinner'all with amazing detail. A one sentence answer from you sounds strange." He said, smiling.

Sugni shrugged, the girl he was describing seemed like a stranger to he r now. She died along with her mother.

"Come here." Vickram said , indicating the chair beside him. "come on." He said. She got up and took the chair next to him. "You know something Sugni, life is strange it keeps throwing things at us. Somethings are good, somethings feel so horrible. The mark of the person, is dealing with them in a way that our basic nature does not change. And if there is one person I know who can do that it's you.! I have seen you do it time and time again."

Sugni shook her head. "It's hard to find something funny after almost being sold by your uncle as soon as your mother dies!" She said bitterly. "Of leaving the home you were born in, because it feels unsafe." She went quite for a while. She had a point. "You know" , she continued softly staring out into the night "one day when I went to school, I saw this magazine, that the teacher had. And in it was pictures of different ladies, some were doctors, drivers lawyers, nurses, even police women'but no raai dancers or bedni's'I ran home and I told ma'I was going to be like one of those ladies with a good job, not Raai' they laughed but I said I would show them the only person who did'nt was Maa. " Vickram Listened As she was telling her story , her tears streaking down her face, "But I realize she was just letting me live out some childish fantasy, she knew that could not happen. Sooner or later I would end up right were she was. I may not be like those women in that magazine, but I won't be a bedni'I won't" She said softly , looking at the sky. Vickram had the feeling she was talking to herself rather than him.

"Well you are on the right track." He said. She looked at him

"Only because you stepped in..if you did'nt" She shuddered. Taking a breath Vickram Clapped his hands startling her.

"Let's do something." He said, deciding to cheer her up a bit.

"What?'

"From now on, from this second'we will not think about it, about what could have happened, about what DID NOT happen. That will serve no purpose will it,? except make you sad and unhappy. So what happened was just a way for you to get out. What we will do is thank your mother for watching over you. Hmmm" He said,

"Now you have to try and do one more thing'Keep your mother happy."

"How?"

"Well she was happiest , when you were happy. She was the saddest when you were sad. Am I right?" She nodded.

"So let's make the best of what we have, how about that?" He said.

Sugni wiped her cheeks as she smiled; he was right why cry over what did not happen. "I'll try, but I still miss not having her here."

"Of course you'll miss, and yes you will be sad, but when you think of her ..think of the good times you shared with her'think of things that made her happy. It's ok to cry now and then, but it's not Ok not to smile." He said

She nodded. "Thakur Mallick ..you are smart 'for a Thakur" she said, dead pan

"Thank you'and you are wise'for a bedni." He replied. They both laughed.

They sat in comfortable silence for a while. Sugni feeling much better than she had in a while. Vickram Thakur Mallick was really special, she could not help think. She never much thought about marriage or love before, knowing that that was not in the cards for her, but if she had to fall in love with someone she hoped that he would be someone just like her Thakur Mallick. She Shook her head..where was that coming from.??

"Sugni?" Vickram said after a while.

"Yes" She answered.

"Reva is coming back tomorrow." He said. She wondered why he did not sound so happy about it.

"There is something I would like to tell you about her." He said

"Yes."

"See, Reva you might find a bit strange,'that is because she she's not exactly well, up here." He said indicating his temple. Sugni already knew that, as Ramu Kaka explained about her illness.

"I know'I mean Ramu kaka said she was not well." He nodded. Of course, she would hear.

"Everyone around here knows, when she starts acting up either stay out of her way or do as she asks If you can't. I just want you to be prepared, sometimes she can be down right cruel. Now that you are working in the house you will be in her path more. Just be careful and if possible try to avoid her.Please."

"I understand'I will try'" She said. She already had a taste of her madness, she heard some crazy stories from Ramu Kaka, and she was warned by Vickram. Sugni wondered just how bad one woman could be. She was about to find out!
