The Concept of a Woman Always Needing a Man

Hi guys!! I am new to this forum, but this is a show I follow. I like shows like PSH because of the social reality they try to expose and how they push past the box of which so many Indian serials have been confined (the saas bahu concept, the love story.) Before this I only watched Agle Janam, and I do not watch many Indian serials and so when I see one I like I get very happy. Before beginning my post, I just want to say I am not here to bash and just want to state my opinion. I am also a very big feminist, and my studies in gendered society and cultural sensitivity has led me all the way to my masters thesis. So please realize this is my own bias.

I see a lot of argument about Sugni being with TVS or Adi, and for me I don't think that should be the argument at all. This show, from the start has shown a clash of two worlds in rural India- the Bednis and the Thakurs. Both TVS and Adi are from the world of Thakurs, a world which does not and will not ever fully understand the grievances of the common man. I don't want to get in to a sociology lecture, but it is true, our socialization effects the way we think, eat, share etc. Even as something as simple as women sitting with their legs crossed is a part of our socialization, of women being classy and dignified and taking up as little space as possible. Adi is arrogant, and I don't think I have to comment on some of his horrible comments towards Sugni and bednis and TVS by not acknowledging Sugni deserves to know the truth about his wife, automatically lowers her to a lower position. They both have been socialized to see themselves as implicitly superior, so much so that it is probably at the unconscious level.

So why then does she have to be with either of them? Why does a woman always have to get recognized in society through a man. If she marries either one of these men, her recognition and dignity, her honour would still come from marrying a thakur. Which social norm has really been broken, that the bedni could not break out and create a mould for herself, that if she got any sort of status it was still through a thakur?? What has really changed, the dynamic that the bedni is dependent upon the thakur is still there.

Why are we so fixated on love stories and not female liberation? Why do we always need the woman to be with a man for us to feel happy and content, and feel that finally the show has reached a good end point? Why can't a woman make a stand for herself in society, and better yet, if there is a love story, make it so that the man gets recognition through the woman!! We as woman should constantly ask ourselves these questions, or else we just reinforce the dynamic that is already there.

Just my POV. lots of love and no intention to offend.

True people are so fixating on the pairs much more than necessary. A woman is often strong enough to fight for herself. The knight in shining armor concept has been used again and again by various show makers. The show is unique in itself and the makers have done a great job so all the arguments about the lead or a jodi are useless here.

I agree, I think the show has shown that for so long the bednis have been defined by the thakurs, living off their scraps, then why should Sugni's marriage also be defined by a thakur? What has really changed, Sugni should define herself and then if the CVs show a love story I would be fine.

Ah I been meaning to post a very similar post as initially when this shows started, that is what I thought it is going to be. And while initially I didn't mind Vikram helping Sugni but then like so many other shows it took the romantic angle and I would have to disagree with the person above who says the concept of knight in shining armor doesn't apply here. In fact so far the show has shown nothing but that concept- the way VT arrived at every opportunity and helped. I would actually go as far as saying that what Sugni is feeling is not love but appreciation and gratitude towards VT as he would always arrive at a moment when she needed help and helped her out. VT was the one who gave a name to the things she was feeling and how convenient to call it love. I am neither team Adi or VT but would say that all the things that VT has done so far to win over Sugni have been very thought out and planned and a man in love is not liked that. That's why people often joke about a women/man in love and not being able to pay attention to anything else 😆. VT does not seem anything like that. On the other hand Adi has not had much of screen time to show much to the audience and the things he has shown has not impressed me.

Going back to the issue the TM has brought up, I wish this show would focus on Sugni's journey of self exploration and reaching the heights that both Thakurs and Bednis never thought a Bedni would reach. I want her to fulfill her dreams and reach her goal by herself and not by someone else help and that a man's help. I want her to get there by herself so when she is there she could look at people and say that a Bedni could dream and make those dream successful and that too without a Thakurs help.

On random note, I wish they would start a story line where they focus on why the man in Bedni communities don't do anything and make them feel like the useless human beings they are.

Hope I didn't offend anyone as this is just my point of view and it is not meant to offend anyone.

I agree, I want self exploration. Even TVS helping her further reinforces the bedni-thakur dynamic of one always being dependent on the other...the show should show that dynamic shattering. That would be splendid to watch! I don't know about any knight in shining armour, but a true knight in shining armour would be happy as Sugni defined herself, and as a man didn't feel the need to help her every five seconds. In fact Sugni should be the knight in shining armour to some man ;)

p.s. TVS wanting to help her all the time also shows his socialization, because to him, bednis always needed the help and he is reinforcing that

Excellent!! this was actually I wanted to convey through my earlier posts.. With that fire and zeal in her, it would have been better if Sugni would have run away to city with her mom, faced all odds there and tried to win herself a respectable position in the society. Ofcourse in her journey, people would have contribute too coz man is a social animal but Sugni's independence, self reliance and self sufficiency would have stood out rather than looking upto someone ( thakur) to fulfill her aspirations. This way she would have set up an example in front of bedia women.
But then, I guess author always had intentions to project this serial as another lovestory in the back drop of bedia culture, so we can do little, but to watch till it seems meaningful.
Moreover showing romance day in day out is quickest way to garner trps targeting the kind of age group and gender 😆 which watches the serials. So realism in Indian shows is a far cry .
We have started seeing it in movies lets hope someday it will become the essence of indian shows.

Thanks everyone for replying!! I look forward to reading those who will join the discussion later.

@Sweet_Krishna: I am waiting for the day the Sugni comes back with a position in society and throws it at the thakurs faces. The problem is, shows feed off of TRPs and as another poster said, people are just obsessed with picking jodis. Even is TVS does love her, the show has still reinforced a point unconsciously, that the woman is only fulfilled through the man. Even Sugni's mother is pushing towards marriage, because a woman will finally get her honour through it, but Sugni should break all of that.

Glad people agree! :)
