I am not going to write any more daily analysis. I don't think it is worth it, what with the show ending in next 2 weeks. Now my only analysis of the show will come at the end of it. But I have made this post for something else. To share some experience of soap watching in last couple of years and lessons I have learnt.
Whenever a serial is ending maybe prematurely we always bash the channel, PH etc. But think about it logically. TRP is needed for a show and if the investment is more if the TRP doesn't come in then the ROI suffers. And this affects the bottomline. No channel wants to do this. Shows like EHT and BD are ahead of its time. Much much ahead. Because the people who will watch them cant watch it at that slot or for that matter in TV.
We are an online community and maybe we have preference at home. We can take remote at home. But that is not the case everywhere. I still remember the days when howmuch ever I want to watch a show, my mom will have 2-3 other shows at that time. Grandpa and grandma too will have their preferences. In reality it was like 7-10 the remote passed between mom, grandma, grandpa and papa with their shows and then news. Evening will be what we get or late night post 10:30 that too after second tv came and it was installed in the first floor. There too fight was there. Sports for brother, movie, songs or show for me. So I didn't even know what was running in TV for most of the time around 10 years back.
Now we know, because of internet. We can watch shows online. On computer or on smartphones. But we constitute hardly 15-20% of the total population in India. The vast majority are still in the condition I mentioned above. Fighting for a TV remote and most occasions not able to get it. They might watch online, watching in TV is still a difficult proportion for youngsters. Imagine a house hold with dada , dadi , mama, papa single TV. On 8:30 between Udaan and BD, dadi will take Udaan. She is elder and she needs to be respected. Because BD is something they cant relate to. For e.g it took me 2 weeks to convince my mom to watch BD. But Zee TVs Ek Tha Raja, Ek thi Rani with one epi she was convinced. Both are love stories, but the second one has put the TRP ingredient also into it. That show has a feel for youngsters, but yet elders will sit because at the onset itself they have introduced the all powerful Rajmatha Priyamvadha and Badi Rani.
Women watching the TV show needs power equations. I mean the real female antagonist in the show. It's not our need, but TRP audience need. They need to connect to the emotion of the female protoganist. Her fight. So it has to put in their plane or rather the plane of vast majority out there.
It's true but a sad truth. So will this change. Yes it will. But it will take time. When the online medium is equally monetizing as TV. When the online audience can call shots where the TV rating + Online rating decide the fate of the show, where the show might continue online if not in TV. But for that to happen it will take another 5-10 years.
So what should we do now. Instead of bashing SP and PH enjoy whatever is left of the show. Be happy that the show is ending and is not getting butchered for TRP. Yes it might have a rushed ending, but if it extends does anyone of you here wants triangle, rectangle, marry, remarry, hidden baby and complications or do you want some moments which you can recall fondly whenever you think about the show. I want the latter for any show I watch.
EHT gives me that feel, I watch epi again and again in hotstar. I watch the dubbed version in Malayalam, because it ended prematurely, rushed but then it ended rightly also, with the right message. Not with sacrifice business, not with 2 sisters running behind the same guy, not with the rape victim forced to marry the rapist as that is the most honourable thing to do. It still lingers and it will linger for years to come, telling that was a different show.
Look at DABH, it was a beautiful story. I remember watching episodes again and again online. But today the way the show has gone, I don't even feel like watching the old episodes. Will DABH be remembered the same way as EHT. Answer is no. It will be remembered as a masterpiece tampered.
And SNS, ye rishta and all will be remembered whenever people want to have a nice laugh.
Where you want to fit BD. If it is in the EHT category let us allow it to end it with dignity. I would say honorable death , than bleed it with unnecessary twists and turn for TRP so that finally we ourselves will tell end the show and TRP aunty might be watching 😃
So please give a good farewell to BD. Let the lasting impression of this show be such that we watch it again and again online

I do agree

But shruthi please don't tell...that sp is fairer this time

I would not consider sp as a good channel

Seriously 2-3 months

Who will gain trp...just in three months...

When the long lasting idiotic shows like sns, yrkh, dabh(sorry to say)...

For ages and ages...

Then how can we get trp...

Sorry no offence please

Indian viewers are insensible
They are still stuck up in not not BC...

2016...is coming...come on yaar stop saas bahu sagas...please start creativity...new concepts...

But alas no one listens to us...

Getting trp just in 2-3 months... šŸ˜† is like demanding a new born baby to shake leg on"London thumakda thumak da" šŸ˜†

I agree with what you have said.
But the only thing that frustrates me.. is that BD wasn't getting terrible numbers. They could've given it some time to improve.

When they started the show they knew it was something a bit different from the usual trp aunty crowd. Don't start a show and then not give it a proper chance... like at least 6 months.

If you know its something different its going to take time to build up a different kind of audience. My dad started really liking the show.. he thought the characters were getting interesting. He isn't the kind of guy to normally watch much tv. But he'd come home and be excited to find out what happened next.

But I prefer ending it to completely destroying the character integrity which is what would've happened. Like you said this is something we will likely go back and watch again because we still feel that love for it.

@fero at 8:30 BD is having a TRP of 1.2. Bitter reality. EHT within one month of its launch was hovering at 1.8-1.9 and by Jun end was getting TRP more than 2.0. Expectation for SP for any prime time show as I understand is 2.5 or above.
SP was not even satisfied with 2 or 2+ , but then atleast 2+ ensured EHT got more life and occasionally it beat BV in the slot. But EHT just surfaced on 2.5 when Devga marriage happened. I guess by then it went under radar and makers decided to end it. EHT ended with a TRP of 3+. EHT also had the advantage that EHT was doing really good in UK ratings.
Sadly BD didn't pick up in UK too and even after 2 months it has not moved beyond 1.5. Yes I hate the rule as much as I do. But then SP is like that. They do it all the time to remain at top. It is not being fair, but the power equation is skewed very much towards them. For power to go the TRP of their SBS has to go down and even with such sacking they should not be able to get their position back which should make them go back to the drawing board and change the strategy. Where they have to think different and bring different to attract new audience and keep them too. I don't know whether it will happen.
I feel bad, but then I would prefer to cherish the moments remaining than blaming.
Also think about movies. If the movie doesn't have audience in the first week, don't the theatre owners remove it, let how much ever good the movie is. Doesn't bad timing of release of a movie have affected their box office collections. Don't we have movies that didn't fare that much in boxoffice, but have worked wonders in TV. Malayalam movie " Truth" was a flop in boxoffice, but over the years have become cult classic in TV. Same with the movie " Tarzan the wonder car". This movie is hilarious , you can simply sit and watch, but it was a box office failure. They are many other movies like this, which were later monetized in TV.
We have to accept the same with shows now. No TRP means end in TV, but can be seen online and over the years they might become cult classics online.

Great post, and sadly very true. It is very difficult for a show like BD to win out in a multi-generational, single-TV household. In fact a show like this was much better suited to a late-night slot than the prime time 8:30 when the TV is in high demand. Star Plus used to be really good with the time slots of their shows; I don't know what has happened lately.

This is what I wrote in the CC earlier, which explains my take on the whole situation.

This is just speculation, but I feel like there must have been a reason that the TRPs, which didn't seem that bad to us were unacceptable to SP. My guess, judging by the way they promoted the show, the prime-time slot and how much was spent on producing it, is that it was pitched as a huge TRP puller to the channel. In order to make back the money they had spent, the show probably had to be a runaway hit, which it sadly wasn't and instead of sustaining more losses on the hope that it will pick up, they decided to cut their losses and end it. I feel like there are shows for which lower numbers are more acceptable, especially those which have high TRPs on low budget. That's why the old saas-bahu shows never end... they are low-cost and high return. And as much as I adore Asmita and Pearl, if the PH and channel wanted this to get huge numbers right away, they should have cast at least one really well-known face to have an automatic viewership in their fanbase. I love how idealistic they were, and I loved the show, but it was never going to be a huge success TRP-wise.

In many ways, it's better when a show ends early, but it doesn't take away the sting of losing so much you had hoped to see...

Exactly Saman. See in a evening slot less than 2 is acceptable that's why Mere angane mein is surviving as in that slot expectation will be less say above 1.
And BD was expensive. They had 2.5 crore set and all, so it was expected to give atleast 2 TRP in a month. If atleast that was there , then they would have continued. But BD went below 1.5 and in a slot like 8:30 you are expected to grow fast.
See TMH, though not great they get TRP somewhere 2-2.3 and its cost will be less. And SBS most probably they all would have recovered what was put into them and still getting revenue without any additional cost.
EHT's problem was told exactly that by many forum members. ROI. It had many experienced actors especially the leads were well known faces and even with 2+ TRP it might not have given SP the expected revenue. EHT was a big ticket launch with special trailors and promos. SP did make huge investment on the show and when you watch the show you will feel it.
Just like we used to say EHT should have never risked with JA and BV, BD should have never risked with Udaan and Jamai Raja. That was the blunder SP made with these shows. They should have been given less competitive slots or even late night slots where they would have managed better TRPs.

^^Exactly. ROI is the key here, I think and might also explain why TSM is being allowed to continue and has been given a chance (if you can even call it that!) to improve the numbers. Maybe the financial loss was not so heavy there. The thing I don't understand is why they launch these high-budget shows, spending so much on promotion and all when it's clear that they won't appeal to the masses because of genre? It's like they want to bring good content but at the same time can't stand by it when it doesn't immediately get TRPs. The only explanation I can think of is that there are multiple people at the channel at loggerheads about this...

The real problem is that shows like BD don't suit the daily soap format because they are character-driven rather than plot-driven. There was no real "event" or "track" on this show until the Pinky bhau incident. The story structure was looser and it was more about the interactions of the characters and the many, many types of relationships. That was the beauty of the show that I fell for, as an unconventional viewer, but that was also the weakness of the show, in terms of conventional success. Mainstream audience needs something to be "happening" every moment, even if that something is as ridiculous as the vamp tricking the heroine into putting salt in the halwa which she is supposed to serve to the family. šŸ˜†

You know what I really wish? I wish they would make a new channel for intelligent, character-driven, progressive shows with limited episodes, or with a seasonal format. It's not just about youth shows but about Desi shows for the thinking viewer where we are not slapped across the face with everything. When I first started watching BD, the way it was filmed reminded me so much of Pakistani dramas; measured and realistic. I just wish there was a safe place for shows like this and audience like us on Indian TV... It is changing, but until this daily format goes, I think creative ideas will remain imprisoned in it.

Fab post Shruthi😊Well I might appear new to this forum but this forum isn't new to me!Have been lurking around the forum for quite a few days nowšŸ˜›
Well coming to all this off air news it came as a utter shock to me!Never did i think this show will face the axe this early!Well, i m not many shows old but have learnt my lessons pretty well through my very first show! And i m in complete concordance with all the points you have raised!Given my case i myself will have to fight with mom to watch BD on air! These kinda shows which have logic and crisp story in them are not largely welcomed by the audience!Call it fate of the indian tv or the pattern to which the viewers have been addicted is such that all they need is masala in the form of saas bahu or a third wheel between the leads to keep the story going! This system will only change when a channel will attempt rational shows by not paying heed to trps!Sadly it's not gonna happen anytime soon in the future
Coming to this BD closure the channel was just testing it's waters and now when the didn't get the desired trps they just pulled the plugs! Now to lead the slot back when sp was during MB days all that the channel need is a triangular love story and who other than queen of soaps can be the best pick?
The only way a youth based show can survive in this channel is when it's provided a dead slot like 6 or even earlier!
And about EHT whatta show it was man!The best of SP ever! That was their nayi soch!It had the the right mixture of scheming and plotting by both protagonist and antagonist which is a rare sight in SP shows or any indian shows for that matteršŸ˜†
Well, this is it from my side!
Would love to see the talented cast with a new show in a better channelšŸ˜›

@saman I agree to you. SP was testing waters. It started with Saraswatichandra I would say. it was one hell of a love story in the beginning. But SC survived through the muddy waters because that was the only thing in SP like that at that time and SP was ruling the charts with most of its shows holding top slot position. That was when EHT was launched. EHT too sailed somehow, and around EHT time they decided to bring more and more youth shows whereas Colours went for theme based and Zee for love stories in the TRP format. SP started losing it this year with none of its new shows clicking. Bad slot choices combined with programme selection has cost SP a lot. BD unfortunately was the unluckiest I would say. Wrong place at the wrong time. With the channel losing the top position, a prime time slot and low TRPs
@crazian Life Ok is somewhat better than SP, and I would say SP should move all these shows to Life OK where they can survive for 6 months even with 0.3 TRP. And they should start nayi soch shows with low budget but with good content. EHT was a show in its own league. I had loved every character there. Not only protoganist and anatagonist. Every character had ulterior motive. The beauty of the show was what you see and what you hear are not the truths. It exposed the background hypocrisies like anything. That was exactly what gave the show TRP in the final run also. In the front end TRP aunties got what they want to see. Sanskaari bahu. In the backend we viewer's watched the beauty of that marriage deal opening up in a such way that evil trio is vanquished. BD never got that chance.

i agree with u when it comes to a good farewell for Bd. I am happy that i followed a show wic made sense and easily could connect to reality. Actors did a good job. The lead pair is gorgeous, no doubt! Happy ending of Bd will keep me in peace and will just watch it on hotstar and make myself feel good and re-live MehBeer.

But with trp factores, i am sorry sruthi, i would not agree. You give 6 montsh to a story and if it still doesnt pick i can understand. Tu mera hero, suhani si ek ladki wic are currently running on sp had equal trps as BD wen they started off, slowly with time they pulled off and reached 2. Bd is just a 2 month old baby and they really had to give time. Its not that Bd had a trp of less than 1. with the main slot of 8:30, wer udaan and jamai raaja are running fr more than 6 months are already strong but bd did grab attention and at least gained a decent trp, wic we cant deny! So my only point is after running fr 6 months and they would not have trps i could still understand but this treatment was really unprofessional of sp i would say.

they might have tiffs with ph as well wic i m guessing now, dono!

I am really feeling bad fr pearl and asmita . These two had a drastic change in acting skills and they really did well. These two shud be gvven a chance together again to work. I know online popularity doesnt affect trps, but sp could at least consider their online popularity and shud have a given a chance to BD. It is one of highly viewed on hotstar. Dont tehy get that simple point?
