Chapter 2: Missing You

Each delicate drop fell from the womb of the dark clouds above. Each individual drop travelled the perilous, frigid journey from miles above to clash resoundingly against the window pane. Each drop now slowly slid down, effortlessly merging with other drops and leaving miniscule droplets behind its streak. The dripping continued till each immaculate drop, now with many others, reached the solid, grimy pavement below. Only to be stepped on by a passerby. Only to be split by the rubber tires of a truck. Only to be forgotten amongst the masses of drops to come.
"Pearl," Jack held a piping cup of Earl Grey tea before her. "For you."
Her eyes shifted from the dotted window pane to the wisps of steam rising from Chinese teacup. She hesitantly reached for the tea, solemnly thanking him.
"So' how's work?" he sat beside her on the ledge of the window pane.
She pulled her knees closer to her chest, "Alright. Fun, I guess." she curtly responded. "Um, how's school?"
"UCSF is so hard. Guess majoring in biochem and minoring in microbio wasn't the best idea." he smirked as he ran his fingers through his charcoal hair.
"Well, the medical field is no walk in the park. It's good you're prepping yourself now." Purvi smiled.
"So optimistic." he muttered as his rest his head on his knees and looked out of the window.
"How's your love life?" he nonchalantly brought up. Purvi squirmed a bit in her seat before she could conjure a response.
"Alright."
"How can everything be alright, Pearl?" he chuckled. "Work is alright. Love is alright. Everything's just fine and dandy?"
"When is your mom coming home?"
"You're so enigmatic, Pearl. I like that about you. But I want to know more about you. Beyond the surface." he held her forearm.
"When is your mom coming home?"
"Lucy's coming home at five." he answered.
"I'm' I have classes right now. I'll be going now." Purvi went to her room and change from her T-shirt and sweat to pumps, little black dress, and white trench coat. She loosely tied her hair into a high pony tail and made her way to the door.
"Pure-vee?" Jack called as she placed her frail hand on the shiny, golden knob.
"What?" Purvi turned around.
"It's Pure-vee. Right?"
"Sure."
"You look nice, Pure-vee." he rose from the ledge and made his way towards Purvi.
He stared intently into her brown, innocent eyes before he opened the door for her.
"Have fun."

12:00 PM, San Francisco, Westchester Park
Stuffing her bony hand inside the pockets of her trench coat, she made slow, deliberate steps through the fog that had enveloped the park. She heard the fussing of children, the laughing of couples, the niceties between friends as she continued to put one foot before the other. She felt miserable in the below freezing environment. Purvi had not a hand to hold or a friend to confide in. Just like each petal of the cherry blossom, she fell from grace.
The image wasn't as pristine in her mind as it had been 9 month prior. Only tatter pieces of her memories in India resided. She vividly remembered seeing her aaji struggle to take in her last breath of air before falling to the hands of cancer. She remembered as the bitter argument she has with Arjun the day before she boarded her flight for San Francisco. She remembered bidding adieu to a bawling Munni and returning her smock to the doctor. All these memories, still stinging like an open wound.
She missed everything, from the long holidays, to the tantalizing food, to cheesy films, right down to the hectic way of life. India, particularly Mumbai, would always be her home. But the nights she spent in Arjun's arms she would always regard as her sanctuary. She missed his strong, comforting touch. She would give anything to just spend another moment with him.
"But he betrayed you." Purvi attempted to convince herself.
He phone vibrated. It was Mr. Kapoor.
She picked up her phone and answered, "Hello, Dr. Kapoor. Good morning."
"Good morning, Pearl. Listen up, I've got a business trip to L.A. and I was wondering if you'd like to accompany me. It's a medical conference about the neurological abnormalities we've been seeing in patients with the new rise of technology. We leave for L.A. in two days. Airfare and hotel fees are covered. What do you say?"
"That's great Dr. Kapoor. But will anyone else from our staff be accompanying us?"
"Well, I can only sustain the cost of myself and a colleague. I really believe this trip could advance your career."
"Well," Purvi thought, "ok'"
"Great. See you in the office tomorrow. We'll go over the itinerary and details for the presentation."
"Ok, see you tomorrow Dr. Kapoor."
"Please Pearl, call me Dhani."
"Ok. Dr. Dhani, I mean, Dhani. Bye."
She hung up and texted Sheila all about the conference. She was nervous, but all the while, excited for the Los Angeles excursion.

He just couldn't put the pieces together. "Let's go over the facts one more time, Arjun."

Arjun removed his glasses and rubbed the temples of his eyes. He began making a list that he had made several times before, only recounting the information.
-All female victims
-Typed biblical quotes in Calibri font left in the right hand of every woman
-All on different continents, North America left-
"I have to go," Arjun reflected, "but I don't know where he'll strike next."
"Arjun!" Sachin called as he brought in some groceries from the local ASDA.
"Hey Sachin." Arjun walked to the living room and lay on the frumpy brown couch adjacent to their small kitchen. "Did you bring my stuff?"
"Of course." Sachin removed a packet from the brown bag and tossed it to Arjun. Inside the packet were three, small marijuana joints. Arjun's only costly pleasure. He pulled a lighter from the pocket in his khakis and puffed a few smokes. He managed to relax, to forget all of his worries. It was as if he was temporarily freed from a throbbing headache.
"How was your date with Jenny?" Arjun attempted to make small talk.
"It was fine." Arjun put a six pack of Corona into the fridge. "Mia's quiet alright if you ask me. She's acting as if she's fallen in love with Jay again for the first time"
"That's beautiful." Arjun closed his eyes and breathed in. He let out a sight of pleasure and ran his fingers through his hair as his muscles relaxed. He began to see vibrant psychedelic images appear before him.
"You know what Arjun? I really don't think Purvi would approve of this." Sachin slyly remarked as he began to prepare dinner.
"Shut up, Sachin."
"Why?"
"Because I said so."
"Why did you say so?"
"Because' because I don't like to think of her living in a world without me."
A tear streaked down Arjun's right temple as thought of Purvi resurfaced. He hungered for the touch of her soft shoulder, the sound of her innocent laughter, a kiss of her sweet lips. He missed everything about her. No marijuana, no amount of puzzling murder mysteries, no companion could make up for her absence. She had become his world and living without her for the past year was surreal. He led himself to believe that he was living a nightmare that would soon be over. He'd soon wake up in Purvi's arms on his lofty bed in the Deshmukh mansion. Hopefully.
"I'm going to L.A. tomorrow." Arjun announced. "For the biblical quote killer. LAPD might have some information about his whereabouts."
"When will you come back?"
"When I solve these murders. Then I'll die in peace."
"You idiot. You have to be the best man at my wedding, Arjun."
"Yeah, yeah." Arjun smirked as he went to his room. "I'm going to start packing."
