LONDON, ENGLAND
"There's a mad man. 45 years old and English. Completely out of his wits. Suffers from PTSD and depression. He still believes he's a soldier practicing trench warfare during World War I. He's a killing spree and hides in the sewers, like hiding in trench, after each murder. He's completely in love with a 19 year old, who is identical to a Red Cross nurse who treated him when a shrapnel shell was lodged into his left shoulder. Coppers are just about to catch him when he commits suicide at 'zero hour.' He comes to the realization that the years he spent in the name of nationalism and the respect he earned from serving were of no use. He had lost his dignity the moment he had shot his Lewis gun at another youth, solely because his uniform color was different that his own.
"What a story, yaar!" Sachin remarked, with his mouth agape.
This storytelling a dinnertime became perfunctory for the Patels and their weekly dinner guests, Sachin Deshmukh and Arjun Kirloskar. Jay would recite a new, enticing plot at each dinner as Mia would trace the pattern of the tablecloth with her finger. His imagination and creativity drew him towards her, but now faced with rising bills and rent to pay for the flat, she wished he'd do something other than daydream.
"What do you think, Arjun?"
"It's very interesting. Shoot me a manuscript whenever you find the time."
"When will you all stop this?" Mia sprang out of her seat, glaring at wide-eyed men with mouths full of dal makhni. "I'm going to bed. Good night."
"It's only seven thirty love!" Jay called after her. She slammed the bedroom door after her in response, shaking the frail window panes.
"Oh, um, seven thirty you said? I must be going." Sachin dabbed his lips with a napkin, "Got to meet with Jenny to go over tomorrow's board meeting. See ya, mate!"
Another slam at the front door left Arjun and Jay adjacent to each other at the dinner table.
"Ufff, Arjun, never, ever get married. You'll only be met with disappointment." Jay grimaced. "Will you accompany me to some bourbon by the crackling fire, Arjun?" He attempted to lighten the mood.
"I'd love to Jay, but I can't. Have to work on a case."
"The gas mask killer?"
"Yes. And please do talk to Mia."
"Don't tell me what to do."
"Sorry'well, I'll be going now. Bye."
Arjun left, as he always did, disheartened. The Patels always fought, and at times he was drawn into the mix. He didn't know why he always came back every week, but he knew he would keep going. Maybe it was Mia's Gits meals, Jay's bizarre stories, or just sense of being a part of a family.

"Jenny, love! How are you?" Sachin greeted the posh princess, attempting a peck on the cheek.
Jenny refrained from his touch and smoothed the shoulder pads on her lilac dress. "Quite alright," she coldly responded, "Have you contacted the builders in Chennai?"
"Yes! And they've scanned me the contractual agreement to begin building." Sachin replied. "And before you ask, no, I haven't accepted Mittal & Co.'s proposal for a merger on the Gandhinagar flats."
"We'll. That's all I really wanted to discuss. Don't know why you chose to meet here instead of the office." Jenny rolled her eyes and crossed her arms.
Clearly, she thought of Sachin as nothing but a liability. Mr. Manav had nowhere else to dump his happy-go-luck son but in the midst of the flourishing London headquarters of Deshmukh Inustries. Sachin Deshmukh, Jenny thought, nothing more than a figurehead.
"Well, uh'" Sachin bit his lower lip. "To' to get to know you! Know you better. We've been working together for almost a year now and I'm sure we'll be working together in the future. But I hardly know you!"
"We have a professional relationship, Mr. Deshmukh."
"I know, I know. But I can be a good friend, too." he persisted. "Let's play a round of rapid fire! So what's your favorite color?"
"Turquoise."
"Favorite movie."
"This is irrelevant Sachin."
"Just play along, yaar! Hmmm. What are your hobbies."
"Purchasing real estate. And shopping every now and then."
"Favorite song?"
"Strauss' Blue Danube Waltz."
"Which period of time would you travel to, if time travel existed?"
"Victorian Era."
"Speak any languages besides English?"
"French, Hindi, and broken Tamil."
"Favorite book?"
"Jane Eyre."
"Favorite TV show?"
"The news."
"Real name?"
"What!?" Jenny broke the fluidity of their game. "I'm tired of this bakwaas. Come to work when you get your act together."
She stormed out of the restaurant, leaving an ever persistent Sachin with new motivation. He hummed a few lyrics to himself as he finished a chocolate gelato.
"Khambe jaisi khadi hai, ladaki hai ya chhadi hai
shola hai phool jhadi hai, pattakhe ki ladi hai
aankhon mein ghussa hai, labon pe gaali hai
dekho jara dekhjo yaaron, khudako samajhati hai kya"

SAN FRANCISCO STREETS
9:34 PM
"And today he asked me to have coffee with him tomorrow morning!" Sheila fluttered. "Hmmm, Sheila Dhani Kapoor, has a nice ring to it, doesn't it? Maybe he has a long lost connection to K's in Bollywood?"
"How sweet." Purvi coyly agreed. "I can only imagine you attending premieres with Kareena and Karisma."
"So, tell me Purvi. How's your love life going?" Sheila nudged her shoulder as they paced down Stockton and Stutter.
"Just fine."
"Did you go to the speed dating event I gave you a card for?"
"No."
"Why?"
"I don't like those things Sheila. Everyone puts on a farce and tries to impress you within the minutes you're there. Nobody fall in love like that."
"Nobody's asking you to fall in love! Just give someone a chance."
"I don't want to get hurt again."
This declaration led to a deafening silence for the rest of the night until Sheila hopped onto the BART. Purvi was left isolated, alone, and depressed as she had been for the past year. Occupying herself with mindless work was her only consolation. She had made friends, but they didn't understand her. She felt utterly and completely lost, her mind as hazed as San Francisco's notorious fog. You were born alone, Purvi thought, and you're destined to die alone.
She clacked down the cold pavement of Lombard Street until she reached her only sanctuary, her shared home on the the third floor of Carmel Rincon Apartments.
