Tanya, we make sweet and spicy modak. The sweet ones are filled with coconut and jaggery mixture.

Sowmya, kaara and sweet kolzhakattai :) love the spicy ones better than the sweet.

Do any of you believe in not watching the moon today?

Jhanvi, mummy always makes the sweet ones, don't think I've ever tasted spicy kozhakattais. I love the sweet one mummy makes...missing all the fun staying in the US 😭

Hmm..remember the moon story vaguely, but no never followed explicitly in my house.

I love Ladoos being Gujju Brahmin we would have it during Ganesh festivity every day...Oh my childhood memories 😳..Gujjus make ladoo and not Modak but it is the same meaning...Bappa loved sweets and so do we 😛
Sowmya-Janhvi wouldn't spicy-savory one be like Kachori??? We make gujia with spicy filling...Gujias or gujjus call them Ghughra which are made with sweet ground dryfruits fillings...

I never knew this ritual although born & raised in Mumbai amongst Maharashtrians until today so googled it..😳
Wow interesting fact of myth..😃
This is what I found...

The Curse of the Moon

It is said that anyone who looks at the moon on the night of the Ganesh Chaturthi will be falsely accused. If someone inadvertently sees the moon on this night, he/she may remedy the situation by listening to (or reciting) the story of the syamantaka jewel found in the 'Puranas' or ancient Hindu scriptures.

Varsha, my best friend (since we were both 14) was gujju, they would make laddus, we would make the kolzhakattai or kadubu (in Kannada) and we would both eat till we could eat no more.

No, the spicy ones are a little different than kachoris. They are lentil based too but steamed like idlis. Yummy!!

Sowmya, there are two tales, one that the moon laughed at Ganesha's pot belly and was cursed by Ganesha but the noon apologized and so Ganesha forgave the moon on the condition that anyone watching the moon today would be cursed but would have the curse removed by listening to his story.

Second story is that anyone watching the moon today will be falsely accused as was Krishna of stealing a jewel but listening to the story will remove the curse.

Some say the curse can be removed by watching the moon's reflection in water.

I know these stories only because my kids have made me repeat them umpteen times during the years.
