Okay so this is a general discussion that I'd like to have....since I love discussions and if u are interested please do respond and share your views.
Time and time again we see arranged marriages being arranged. What we also see is how the girl is closely watched, monitored, and a background check is done on her as if she is a criminal. Why has it come to this? Why is it so easy to ruin the reputation of a girl and that too with lies? As seen in Archu's case how can just anyone just make a phonecall and try to ruin her rep? How can someone plant something so big and just get away with it? Why doesn't our society condemn such things?
Would love to read ur views.

You know, I ask myself the same question so many times. The guys have it so easy. No matter what they do it is so easy for them to get away with anything that they want. When they do something wrong it is simply put as 'oh he is boy'. And mother-in-laws are even more shady when I put my two cents into it. Their daughters could be doing anything but they want a daughter in law who is sati savitri. I hate indian double standards. No matter how educated indian society becomes they will never be able to change the innate about them.

I guess people just want to assume the worst about women. Even when people go for a rhista...a part of them is always suspicious about the girl. They never want to accept that your daughter can be everything you are telling them. Thus, at the first chance they get...they have no problem jumping to conclusions. I agree with you both. It does make girls feel like they r being punished for a crime that they have yet to commit. We are treated as criminals though we have done nothing wrong. What gets me more is that the mother-in-laws have gone through something similar when they were seen for a potential marriage. They were paraded before the family...asked various questions...made to feel inferior. Yet, when it is their turn, instead of not following they norm...they have no problem following in the footsteps of their predecessors. When it is their turn to find a bride for their son, they will do exactly the same thing...make the potential brides feel inferior as they once were made to feel themselves.

Marriges have long been arranged in our society and i really cannot dispute on the fact that most people do find martial bliss in these types of marriages. But why is the girl paraded and made to serve poha, which is rather the typical mindset, this question really escapes me. however with the times this is changing and I hope it will reach a certain point which sees both the parties as equals and not on different stages of superiority and inferiority.

This isn't just an indian double standard, it spans most cultures across the globe. No matter how evolved and educated societies have become, women will be viewed in some way as second class citizens. It might not be a promoted train of thought but it will continue to happen.
Now to play devils advocate! Why is it that in most of these shows (as we know art imitates life) it's usually other women that starts vicious rumors and try to break a girl's reputation? I think sometimes as women we can be each others worst enemies.

I agree with most of what has been said by the previous posters. Although, I don't think it is a problem merely rooted in Indian society. Sadly, it is a universal injustice.
The women of every race, culture and nation have to deal with such issues. And I do agree with the poster before me when she says that we women re often our own worst enemies.
How can we expect the menfolk of our society to treat us any better, when we are all too ready to bring each other down ourselves?
The fact that Ajit has carried out such an injustice against Archu is unfortunately no surprise. And whilst his behaviour is to be condemned, I'm more disgusted by the fact that he had the complete support of his mother.
What hope is there for women, when our own 'mothers' work against us??? Manju was spot on when she reminded Ajit that Archu was also someone's sister, and asked her mother did she never once consider the welfare of her daughter when she was planning such a scheme? Rasika has effectively put her own daughters marriage on the line in her desire to destroy Archu.
So these people have to ask themselves at the end of the day, exactly who benefits by this kind of behaviour??
