Part 3

It took two days for Dr. Vikram to do all health checkups. All these days Mini was staying with her parents in a hotel. Partially due to her health condition and partially because she was still under shock to know about her memory loss and trying to adjust with it, she didn’t come out of the hotel room except to go the hospital. Neil tried his best to talk her into staying with him whenever he got chance during her short hospital visits but couldn’t change her mind. Ashok made sure Neil doesnt get to spend much time with Mini. He feared if Mini decided to go with Neil, he would lose the chance of getting his daughter back in his life. Today was Mini’s last day in Manali. Tomorrow she was all set to leave for Delhi with her parents.Today Dr. Vikram had called all of them to tell the results of all medical tests.

“Tell us doctor, what are you waiting for? We have a flight to catch.” Ashok asked impatiently.

“I think we should wait for Mr. Oberoi first. After all he is Mini’s husband.” Dr. Vikram suggested.

Mini became nervous at the mention of Neil. Since last two days he was trying to convince her to stay. Even though she could see sincerity in his eyes but still he was like a stranger to her. She was already confused and right now not willing to burden her mind anymore. She just needed to get rest in her own home and meet people whom she know, needed to get her normal life back.

“We dont have all the time. Agar use aana hota to ab taka aa jata. But I guess ab wo bhi samajh gaya hai ki Mini ki life mein ab uski koi jagah nahi hai.” Ashok concluded.

“I am here doctor. You can tell us about the reports.” Neil said as he knocked on the door to announce his presence. He had heard Ashok’s comment but chose not to reply anything as he himself feared Ashok might be telling the truth. Now that his Mini has forgotten him and even refused to stay with him, there are very high chances that she might never want to come back to him unless she regains her memory. Last two days had taken a toll on him and he was drained emotionally by repeatedly trying to convince his own wife about their love, their relationship and literally begging her to give it a chance. He knew once Mini will be gone to Delhi, Ashok will never let her come back. A part of him had accepted defeat but a part of him still praying for some miracle to happen.

“All the reports have come and there is good news that Ms. Mini is fine, no internal damage, everything is ok.” Dr. Vikram said.

“Thats a great news doctor. It means Mini can travel and we can leave right now to catch our flight.” Babita concluded happily and though Neil was relieved that Mini was fine but still he felt his world was crashing down as Mini will leave now.

“I would suggest you guys first listen the whole thing about her condition.” Dr.Vikram interrupted.

“What more is there?.” Ashok asked in confusion.

"There is something more...some other news which I would like to share with you all and specially with her husband, Mr.Oberoi.” Dr. Vikram said as he picked up a report from the table.

“What are you saying doctor.?” Babita asked getting worried for her daughter.

“Well, I dont know how Ms. Mini will take it in this situation but...” Dr. Vikram started but was Interrupted by Ashok. “Oh Please, just come to the point fast. What it is?”

“We ran some blood tests as a part of routine checkups and it turned out that...that Ms. Mini is pregnant.” Dr. Vikram dropped the bomb.

“WHAT!” Mini stood up from her chair all shocked. “Pregnant? Me...but...no...this cant be happening...no...” Mini struggled to form meaningful sentence as she fought with anxiety rising up inside her. She was already dealing with a lot. Imagine you wake up one morning from your sleep and find out that your whole life has changed, suddenly there is a husband waiting for you outside and as if it was not enough now you turned out to be pregnant with his child...all this and you dont f***ing remember anything about it.

Neil didn’t know how to react. His first reaction was of happiness but then their weird situation didn’t let him celebrate the happiness then panic and fear gripped his heart. What if Mini couldn’t take this shock and it might affect her health? What if she don’t want this baby like she don’t want him anymore in her life? He was engrossed in his thoughts when Mini’s reaction caught his attention.

Mini was backing away from the chair and was about to fall when Neil caught and helped her. “I...I..cant...why this is happening to me?” Mini said while sobbing.

“Look, I know its like raining shocks for you one after another but please control yourself. Its not good for your health to take tension. I will suggest you should talk with Mr. Oberoi on this matter. You both are going to be parents and ultimately its up to both of you to decide everything regarding this baby.” Dr. Vikram suggested and left for his round in the hospital.

“What is there to decide? Everything is already decided. First, we are leaving for Delhi. Mini, we will decide what to do about this...this...thing later in Delhi.” Ashok said pointing towards Mini’s pregnancy reports.

“And who gave you the right to decide anything about our baby?” Neil found his voice back finally.

“Listen you...first you trapped my daughter in marriage then you got her pregnant...I know you did this to get my property.You are a fraud.” Ashok pointed a finger at Neil.

“I am just a husband, a very unfortunate husband whos wife has forgotten him and just few minutes ago he got the greatest news of his life that he is going to be a father but he cant even celebrate that.” Neil replied to Ashok but he only looked at Mini with pleading eyes.

Mini looked in his eyes and there she saw pain and fear right now. Something moved in her heart. She couldn’t hold the gaze of those melancholic eyes. She didn’t even remember this man but seeing him like this was hurting her somewhere. She didn’t know why she was feeling for this man but at this moment she did feel his pain. “Dad, I need to talk to Neil.”

“Mini. No need to talk anything...” Ashok started but Mini didn’t let him complete.

“Dad, please try to understand. I need to do this. Neither of us expected this news but now we have to deal with it. And it concerns Neil as much as it concerns me so...I want to talk to him.” Mini explained.

“Fine!” Ashok folded his hands in front of his chest in frustration.

“Dad, I need some privacy.” Mini requested when she noticed Ashok and Babita aren’t going anywhere.

“But...” Ashok begin but Babita gestured him to leave them alone. Ashok and Babita went to sit in the hospital lobby while Mini and Neil decided to talk in the hospital lawn.

“You dont want this baby...right?” Neil guessed Mini’s preference.

“What do you expect from me? I dont even remember getting married and now this...” Mini looked down at her tummy.

“Its our baby. Symbol of our love. If you hadn’t lost your memory then things would have been very different. You would have been on cloud nine by now, already making list for baby’s shopping.” Neil said while controlling his tears which were threatening to fall anytime now. What he dreamt to be the most happy moment of his life was turning out to be torturous day where he was about to lose his wife and now baby also.

“I dont know anything anymore. The way you describe things related to me, the way you perceived my reaction...I cant relate to that Mini. It always seems you talk about someone else, someone who is my lookalike but not me. I am not someone who likes babies much and you said its been only 3.5 months to our marriage. If its really me then I dont think I would have preferred family too soon. So you see, even thinking about what my life has become in these 5 years gives me jitters.” Mini said in frustration.

“I can understand but now its not only about you or me, there is another life involved in this now. Have you ever thought what if you regain your memory after ending everything?” Neil reasoned.

“But...” Mini tried to argue further but she could really not find anything solid in answer to his question. There will always be a possibility of getting her memory back and if it happens then she dont want to take any wrong decision in her confused state of mind then regret later.

“Just trust me sunshine. In these two days if not anything then you must have come to know about my honest intentions atleast. For God sake! I love you. You are my family and I wont hurt you in any way. Cant you give me a chance, give us a chance. At least few days, if not much. I promise if you dont like it with me then I myself will make arrangements for your travel to Delhi. But please dont take away my hopes without even letting me try.” Neil pleaded yet again.

After some more contemplation finally Mini arrived at a decision. She went to inform her parents about the same.

“What? Are you out of your mind?” Ashok shouted upon hearing that Mini has decided to stay with Neil in Manali.

“Dad, I need to do this. Its not me anymore, there is a life inside me and it deserves a fair chance.” Mini explained.

“Huh! Rubbish. This Neil must have blackmailed you emotionally. I have seen enough life to know people like him. Bloody opportunist!” Ashok let out his anger.

“Dad, Its already difficult for me, dont make it anymore complex. I dont know what circumstances lead me here but I have lived those 5 years, married this man. I must live upto my commitment. I am not selfish person. I must atleast make an honest attempt to understand my past life choices.” Mini confessed.

“But what if you remember everything and leave us again...” Ashok said in flow earning a confused look from Mini but then he quickly manipulated her. “I mean to say what if he feeds you some false story about us and you start believing him?”

“Dad, you are the best man in this whole world, ideal husband, ideal father, righteous man...perfect in every sense. I wont believe anything against you. Have some trust on me. And if at any point I feel uncomfortable here, I will call you right away.” Mini assured him.

Ashok ultimately had to bow down in front of Mini’s decision. He knew his daughter was stubborn and there is no way to change her decision right now. He will try to figure out some other way to manipulate her after sometime. He and Babita decided to leave by evening flight to Delhi.

Ashok took Neil aside when Mini was out of earshot. “No need to be happy. You have not won, not until now. I will soon find a way to take my daughter with me. You may be her husband but she is my daughter. You are a stranger to her right now and I am her perfect father. In this husband vs father game your chances of winning are thin, Neil Oberoi.” Ashok taunted before leaving to airport.

“You are wrong Mr. Khurana. Its not a husband vs father anymore. It is now a father vs father. And as much as you love your 27 year old daughter, I love my unborn equally and I will do everything to make his mother remember our love. However unlike you, I dont plan to manipulate truth for it.”Neil challenged.

Ashok pondered over his words and shot back a look. He had a doubt Neil know about the whole truth why Mini had fought with him and Babita and why she left them. Although he knew Neil is not stupid enough to tell it to Mini because there are high chances she will not believe him. But still it was enough to settle fear of loosing Mini in Ashok’s heart. He resolved to do something quickly to take back Mini.
