The Central Board of Film Certification has completed a second, detailed examination of the upcoming spy thriller Dhurandhar and concluded that the film has no connection, direct or indirect, to Late Major Mohit Sharma. This comes after the Delhi High Court asked the Board to reconsider the objections raised by the officer’s parents, who feared the film drew from his life without consent.
During Monday’s hearing, CBFC informed the Court that it revisited the film strictly on the specific question framed by the judge. Officials examined whether any part of Dhurandhar resembled the decorated officer’s experiences, operations or persona. According to the Board’s latest communication, the answer is no.
CBFC noted that Dhurandhar is a fictional narrative and carries a clear disclaimer saying all characters and events are imagined. The internal assessment also recalls that the Examining Committee had already viewed the film on November 28 and recommended an adults-only certificate with minor changes. After the Court’s directive, officials reviewed the matter again but saw no reason to revise their position.
Advocate Ashish Dixit, appearing for the Board, told the Court that the certification process was still underway. The High Court had earlier remarked that the CBFC could take inputs from the Indian Army if any real-life parallels were found. However, the Board’s latest assessment says such a step is unnecessary since the film does not portray any specific Army officer or real military mission.
The petition was filed by Major Sharma’s parents, who argued that promotional material hinted that the film drew inspiration from true events. They feared misrepresentation and raised concerns over their son’s dignity and posthumous privacy. Justice Sachin Datta asked the petitioners how they concluded the film was based on the officer’s life when only the trailer was available and no concrete evidence of similarity had been presented. The Court ultimately disposed of the petition, directing CBFC to evaluate the objections before granting certification.
With the Board’s fresh review complete and the objections rejected, Dhurandhar will now move ahead in the certification process. The film is directed by Aditya Dhar and features Ranveer Singh, Sanjay Dutt, Akshaye Khanna, R Madhavan and Arjun Rampal.
