Part II
The next day they were down to Jinnah Super; because Sana was too much impressed and wanted to take something as a token from the city. Zaroon and Falak along with Sara thought they would accompany her. Sara and Sana were so much into shopping that Falak, who completely detested it, felt left out. Zaroon wanted to get his cell phone serviced and excused himself. Falak went with him and then excused herself to go to the book bank.
"Okay we will go to the book bank first I'll get my cell phone serviced later..." Zaroon offered.
"It's okay...Zaroon Bhai... I wont be lost."
"Cant risk it..." He laughed out her claim.
So he went with her even after her continual insistence. Falak tried matching his manly pace but he was a little hard to cope up with. She gasped seeing a billboard around the turn. It was Fawad Afzal Khan for a clothing brand and man he looked...breathtaking. Zaroon saw her gaping at the billboard and smiled to himself. She saw him looking at her so she quickly scanned a few other boards and pretended she wasn't hyperventilating at all.
In the book bank Falak buried herself in the comic's corner Zaroon went into the fiction corner. After she was done picking her kind of comics she went looking for him. He was busy reviewing Brown's latest... Inferno. Falak noticed a book to her left with a very obscene cover, her cheeks flushed red and she looked away embarrassed. Although sixteen Falak was a shareef bacha she had always felt solace away from the burger bacha's of Karachi. Anything obscene would freak the sh*t out of her. She didn't want to face Zaroon in front of that ugly cover of a book.
"Zaroon Bhai I am done..waiting for you over the counter." She raced her words and left even before he could turn around. He looked for her but she was almost near the counter. The next moment his eyes went drifting towards the same book. He looked around and then surreptitiously turned the book the other side so its cover wasn't visible anymore.
"Have any idea where the two can be?" Zaroon asked Falak who looked up wondering where Sana could be. Then realized Sana was almost interested in buying everything which fascinated her. She shrugged.
"Let's not look for them... I don't want to attend their shopping bags...hungry?"
"Do they have curly fries in Islamabad?" Falak asked.
He chuckled at her questions.
"I'll have two curly fries and slush." Falak merrily ordered the waiter.
"Water..." Zaroon told him.
"Water?" Falak confirmed.
"I am on diet..." He said and she looked on; thinking may be it was some elderly stuff even Sana would sometimes order such stuff when out and at home wouldn't impede her hands at Falak's chocolate cake.
Sadly, the good time was over. The Sher Afghan family left next day to attend Sana's freshmen ceremony at Topi, Sawabi. The same evening they left back for Karachi. Falak was happy she was taking so many blissful memories from the city she thought was mere offices and huge mansions. It had people like Zaroon...
They landed in Karachi with the setting sun in its beautiful hues. Falak missed Sana and even Zaroon and Sara somewhere.
And a year went by and then another... Sana completed her masters and was back to Karachi. Falak who was now eighteen and mostly busy with the final year of college came home that day surprised to see Sana and another big news awaiting her.
Their parents had received a fine proposal for Sana, just what the doctor ordered, and wanted her to tie the knot with her man to be the next month after Falak got free from college.
Falak was super excited for everyone coming for the wedding and that included the Junaid's.
She was there to receive them with her driver, rest of the lot of the Sher Afghan family was super busy. Something about everything made her somewhat nervous.
Zaroon inhaled and exhaled erratically the moment he was off the plane. Sara eyed him weirdly.
"What are you doing?" She asked him.
"Trying to smell the sea..." He told her continuing with his proceedings. There was the essence of the sea even in the vicinity of the airport. He remembered Falak once telling him,
"In Karachi... there is sea everywhere... even if you can't see it you can feel it around you. It's in the air..its in the feeling... that I love about my city." He was surprised he thought so too, now that he was finally landing in her city.
"Look..that's Falak..." Sara chided and instantly capturing his attention was a girl sparking with a marvelous completeness of womanhood; even when according to his calculations she was still a teen. But he was sure she wasn't the Falak he had seen two years back. Something about her was missing...yes the little girl in her was missing... that girl was now a woman... an admirably beautiful one.
"and its decided we are not going there alone... What's the use of admiring a see without having the company of its real admirers..." Zaroon said pulling his hands away from the dinning table. They were having dinner outside in the lawn. It was Sana's mehndi function which was almost cold now. People had gone back home but the family and close friends were there having their usual reunions. The four of them, Sara, Sana, Falak and Zaroon, were having their dinner on the farthest corner table away from Falak's chirpy cousins.
"But we wont be having any time...since..." Falak started but Sara cut her in between.
"Since we are sneaking out after everyone sleeps tonight..."
"What?" Sana gasped, "mum's gonna kill me."
"Don't worry..." Zaroon winked. "We have the permit..."
"Then it's done... the four of us." Falak chimed like she used to once. Zaroon remembered it and smiled slyly.
They were there in the calm of the feverish sea an hour later. The perfume of the mounting sea saturated the night with wild fragrance and for once Zaroon couldn't figure out if the water was grey or purple. He almost felt like an excited boy seeing the waves rebounding before the inky black sky. He could figure out the sea at night was a whole different thing than the sea at day. Sana had chosen the Clifton beach, which was somehow her all time favorite.
"I am going to miss you..in Lahore." Sana said, everyone turned to look at her but she was only addressing the sea. Falak sighed and put her hands around her sister's shoulders.
"Don't worry I'll put some water in your dowry..." Falak said rather dramatically. Everyone laughed.
They then went on carting their sandals away and having one clumsy water fight until they all smelled of the sea and were all brackish. The crowd on the beach was clumsier even. Sana and Sara walked their way towards the farthest side of the beach with Sara extracting stories about Osama, Sana's hubby-to-be. Zaroon and Falak followed behind them mere yards away. The girls were laughing occasionally and from this distance Zaroon thought he heard them cry instead. It is sometimes difficult to say whether the girls are crying or laughing... there is a thin line which marks the difference.
"Incredible... I am impressed Falak... this vastness and sense of consoling freedom... Karachi is a whole different land." Zaroon said. Falak giggled at his excitement and recalled a similar expression while she was there in Islamabad.
"Of course Zaroon...and this vastness breeds in the personalities of the Karachiites as well... we are just incomplete without it."
He looked her way stunned for a moment. She had indeed grown up.
"I adore it..." He told her in much exhilaration. Falak beamed at his buzz; not exactly knowing what made him state that.
"You can't see night falling in Karachi...can you Falak."
"I am surprised you are an keen observer Zaroon." She said awfully in high spirits at his choice of words. And Zaroon gave himself a victorious smile. The formula did work. She called him by his name again. He wondered if she was noticing it the way he was noticing it. But whatever it was... even if quite teenagerish...he felt a subtle glee in it.
"I have always known you had this knack of finding beauty in the weirdest things...this is still the best place to fall in love with." She said picking up an azure shell from the sand. She then extended it towards him.
"Feel its veins against your skin..." She ordered. He obeyed and rubbed his fingers against the texture of the shell. "You know these veins are like..." Falak began but Sana interrupted.
"Not again Falak...don't bore him with your love-for-Karachi lectures...Sorry there Zaroon..this girl is a bit too much when it comes to this place." Sana said, Falak shrugged looking his way. Zaroon mouthed...I really liked it! To which Falak smiled like a victor.
The Junaid's flew back to Islamabad after attending Sana's Walima. Falak for the first time had a difficult time sleeping; knowing there would be no Zaroon to hear her Karachi sonnets when she wakes up next morning. And somewhere in the sky, Zaroon too was doing the same, and some of her gloom was his and some of his gloom was hers.
To be continued...
Okay a few things here...
The Characters...
I had a real difficult time writing this, because ZAROON IS SUCH A DISTRACTION. I mean you cant not help drooling while you write about him...I for once can't. SORRY!🤣
The billboard part, although funny, did actually happen to me while I was once visiting Jinnah Super with my dad... I stopped dead in my foots gaping at the board like I had never seen something so beautiful...Look what Fawad does to a shareef girl. Was so embarrassing when dad asked me...where I was?!😳😆
Was this pic
The term Burger Bacha..if you live in Karachi..you must be aware...but since many of you don't. It's a term we use for the kind of boys and girls who have their pockets filled with their dad's money and they are the most bigri hui class of bachas here. You know...expensive gadgets, branded clothes, shashkey wali garian... And tera accent and all.😆
Did you notice the not calling BHAI anymore part?😆
I thought I would finish it off in this part but now I require one more. So stay around...would bother you for once more only! Cheers!😃
Don't forget to put in your words here.😳
