AMMA MEANS MUMMY AND NOW HERE SHE IS AS A DUMMY

If one needs understand the state of mind of the people in a certain place, city, town or country, then i think one can come to a quick judgement on this by just observing how people observe traffic rules and also how clean the place is maintained.

Back in late 1997 to early 1998 i spent time in Kuala lumpur, malaysia and in the three months that i was there, what struck me as very significant was the silence or the lack of noisy honking in that city.Honestly,i was so amazed by that one factor and also how well people maintained lane discipline and let other vehicles pass when that vehicle flashed its headlights indicating some urgency.

To expect such discipline and virtues from our country men is a pipe dream and it equals building castles of sand in air.

Only four months have passed since Amma j.jayalalitha passed on and i think to a more peaceful and happier place and already the party which she inherited from MGR and party that she ruled over with a iron hand is now split into three factions.

That scavengers, carrion eaters such as vultures, hyenas, jackals exist in the jungles and forest is well known but i saw these scavengers in human form in recent times.

The way the DMK MLA's behaved or rather misbehaved during the floor test and how they manhandled the speaker and how a few of them sat on the speaker's chair was proof enough that only men of low standards become politicians.

And now these politicians have sunk even lower and to such depths by their recent actions in the RK nagar bye election.

The dummy of jayalalithas dead body being paraded begging for votes is proof enough as to how low these so called politicians can sink to and let us not forget the raids and recovery of crores by the election commission.

It is now clear that Tamilnadu is not one state but two for a line runs deep and straight dividing not the land but deeper in the souls of us tamil people.

One one side we have the politicians and their various parties along with the corrupt govt officials and then you have the public who are now rendered speechless and impotent after witnessing the happenings in our state over the past few months.

A line has been crossed with the usage of the dummy dead body of the late amma and i think a pandoras box has been opened and all i and we can do is raise our eyebrows to our widows peak and form our mouth in the shape of omg.

The ancient Greeks called love "the madness of the gods." Modern psychologists define it as it the strong desire for emotional union with another person. But what, actually, is love. It means so many different things to different people. Songwriters have described it, "Whenever you're near, I hear a symphony." Shakespeare said, "Love is blind and lovers cannot see." Aristotle said, "Love is composed of a single soul inhabiting two bodies."

The answer remains elusive in part because love is not one thing. Love for parents, partners, children, country, neighbour, God and so on all have different qualities. Each has its variants - blind, one-sided, tragic, steadfast, fickle, reciprocated, misguided, unconditional. At its best, however, all love is a kind a passionate commitment that we nurture and develop, even though it usually arrives in our lives unbidden. That's why it is more than just a powerful feeling. Without the commitment, it is mere infatuation. Without the passion, it is mere dedication. Without nurturing, even the best can wither and die.

Biologically, love is a powerful neurological condition like hunger or thirst, only more permanent. We talk about love being blind or unconditional, in the sense that we have no control over it. But then, that is not so surprising since love is basically chemistry. While lust is a temporary passionate sexual desire involving the increased release of chemicals such as testosterone and oestrogen, in true love, or attachment and bonding, the brain can release a whole set of chemicals: pheromones, dopamine, norepinephrine, serotonin, oxytocin and vasopressin. However, from an evolutionary perspective, love can be viewed as a survival tool - a mechanism we have evolved to promote long-term relationships, mutual defence and parental support of children and to promote feelings of safety and security.

Biological, psychological, physiological thoughts, theories and explanations aside Love is a state and it is something all of us experience in various degrees at least once in our lifetime and for the lucky one, maybe several times although then their love might be called lust and infatuation.

But since this love we are talking about is between two adults,i guess i have to keep that in mind and not let my thoughts run away and expand too much.Love between two adults is enough of a topic for it fills most stories,tv serials, movies, songs, plays and a very large part of our adult lives.

If titanic became such a big hit,i can bet that many will tell you it was not for the titanic, special effects, photography but the love between jack and rose and the tragedy that visits them.

Love is like the villian shylock from The Merchant of Venice and demands its pound of flesh from everyone that falls in love.It demands sacrifice, patience, tolerance, motivation and most importantly loyalty.

In todays world these mentioned virtues are much in demand and yet the world stands at the brink of destruction because of a general lack of love between the human species.

Raman's thoughts

In my heart,In all our hearts
In our pumping hearts
There beats a beat for the one you will meet
It beats its own song and rhythm
and waits for the feet to walk towards the one
even if one heart is the west and the other the east
and can never touch and feel their loving hearts
they see, they sing and they dance
to the beat of the cold, cold heart

He hung his coat in the hook next to the other hooks which held another black coat and two sets of work clothes, neatly pressed and ready to be worn and slowly removed his clothes and placed them in the washing machine and went and stood under the shower.with his hands on the tiled wall,he let the the water rain down on him and his thoughts were about jeeva and if he would see her again the next morning.

Raman was like everybody else and yet the one thing that made him stand out and appear different from the crowd or where ever he was,it was his the control he had over his mind and the time he took to judge, evaluate and then speak it.A very rare quality, this alone made him a very valuable asset for his boss and for his clients and then also made other shun him in a subtle way as if telling him that there was something wrong with him.

But he knew that this very virtue of his might be a stumbling block in his feelings that he had developed for jeeva. He was not a kid and knew that women in general liked their lovers to be free, relaxed and open with them and generally were not comfortable with quiet and introverted men.Yat again another but for Yes,even these kind of men found their equals in women and yes even they fell in love and live a life of normalcy.

Raman wiped himself and slipped into his comfortable track pants and a tee and opened the tupperwares containing his dinner that his landlord had made for him.The morning breakfast and dinner was paid for along with his rent and it was a very convinient arrangement and one less need for him to worry about.

He reminded himself that he should drop in and visit them and spend some time with them for they also were distantly related to him although the hows and whys had been too confusing for him when it was painstakingly explained to him by his so called distant aunt and landlady Sarasu akka aka saraswathi.

His mobile rang with a funny tune that had been preset by the factory and it was a joke among his colleagues and raman didnt mind it too much and shrugged his shoulders when it rang and also aroused sniggers among his very own clients.

It was his mother " Hi mum."

" Ramu,finished your dinner."

" Just now amma. How are both you and dad doing?"

" All well ramu.Listen we are coming to chennai next week for a wedding and i want you to come along for it.if it is not too much of a problem."

Raman smiled silently " no mom,at least it will give me a chance to polish my driving skills and also stretch the cars sleepy legs."

Raman's dad came on the line " listen ramu, dont worry too much about driving us for i am bringing my car along and we can go in it to the wedding."

Raman worried ' dad, please dont tell me you are driving all the way from trichy."

" No son,i am hiring a driver for a few days and he is a known person and i use him very often to take your mum to visit all the nearby temples in kumbokonam, thanjavur etc."

" okay dad.See you next week."

Raman placed the mobile next to his plate and took a couple of rotis and helped himself to the vegetable masala and then finished it off with the cup of curd.

He stood rinsing the tupperwares and plate and wondered what jeeva was doing and whether he should mention her to his parents. But his mind told him not to jump the gun for first he had to make sure what jeeva's feelings were about him and not doing so would be a big blunder.

Raman wiped the plates clean and stood still for a second as the thought struck him like a thunderbolt and that was the realisation that it was also possible that she might already be seeing someone and she was just being friendly with him.

" bloody hell, you stupid moron. What have you got yourself into? This is just not the way of your soul and so why are you behaving thus?" thought raman.

Just a few kms away, jeeva sat patiently by the small dressing table and let suja her younger sister comb her hair and at the same time kept talking non stop about herself and her life.

Suddenly suja threw her arms around jeeva's neck " I am going to tell you something and i don't want you to get angry.I have already told dad and mum about it and they said to talk to you about it."

Jeevas gently took her sisters hands and kissed them " sweetie, you are our pet,our darling. You are what keeps us all going,so how or why will i get angry with you."

Suja slowly came and sat in front of jeeva and smiled shyly " jeeva,i have changed my plans about going abroad for further studies in medicine."

Jeeva calmly " okay. But can i know the reason why?"

Suja smiled " yes.I have been seeing someone for a month now and we have decided to get married."

Jeeva frowned in irritation " but what about your studies for you are in your final year of medicine."

Suja cheerfully " Please jeeva, don't worry about that for i am going to finish my exams and also do my internship here in chennai itself."

Jeeva cupped her sisters face " baby, are you sure about this for marriage is a very serious matter and you tell me that you have known this man only for a month or so.Don't you think you should wait for a some more time before deciding about your future."

Suja hugged jeeva tightly and placed her head on her chest and mumbled " no,i dont want to spend one more moment away from him and i want to get married as soon as possible."

Jeeva sighed and held her sister tenderly " okay baby.let me talk to dad and mum and i also want to meet this gentleman if that is okay with you.By the way what does he do,this boy friend of yours."

Suja looked at her sister and shyly " he works in our medical college and is part of the faculty. He is doing his internship in the oncology department."

Then with a mischievous smile and a twinkle in her eyes she pressed the button on the remote and the mp3 player began to scream a famous song from kaadhal desam

Hello Doctor Heart Thirutaache

Suja grabbed jeevas hands and tried to make her dance and soon both fell into the bed laughing and suja began gossiping about her and her boy friend and unknown to both of them the mp3 player began the next song

Anbe, Anbe Aee.. Anbe Anbe..
Ennai Kaanavillaiye Netrodu

Jeeva looked away at the window as tears bloomed in her eyes for that song was bharat's favourite song and he had always played it in his car and once had kissed her for the entire duration of the song leaving both their lips swollen and bruised.

Raman closed his eyes thinking " it does not matter if she loves me or not.For all that matters is being next to her and if all i can have is the time in the bus with her, then that will do."

"All things pass...Perhaps the passage of time is a kind of healing, or a kind of salvation granted equally to all people."? Mizuki Nomura

Nearly fifteen years had passed since they had begun to live in the mountain caves and now it was not only a home but a sacred place for learning to which many came in secret and yet none ever left.

Yeshe under the guidance of the old monk and also tutored by thenmozhi was now the spiritual head of the followers and many who had come as buddhists were now converted to a religion,a movement that meant a higher purpose than just god and the knowledge of god. They followed no particular path although all their paths lead to one of love and understanding.

But even after all these years, none of them knew what lay deep in the caves for they were sealed and lay shut beyond barriers that were not made by humans of this planet.Yet,all of them respected the sanctity of the place and knew that beyond the protection by barriers of stone and a very powerful invisible energy lay many powerful and mysterious truths. But the secret to enter into the hidden lair and also the power lay only with their guardian queen.

For the monks who had come along with yeshe and the women who had been rescued from the pirate ship by thenmozhi, this new place of refuge was like heaven and they treated it such.

For the monks, all they wanted was to meditate and live a life of silence and quiet contemplation and as for the women and the children all they wanted was peace and quiet and the new mountain home gave them all that and more.

Life was quiet and very peaceful and the land and forest provided them with everything that they needed from water,to food and cover. With both their warrior queen and the tiger called buddha patrolling their boundaries they knew nothing could ever harm them.

There were many a time when Thenmozhi would surprise the monks with ancient texts of Buddhism, hinduism and even Islam and other world religions that they had never even heard of and they treated this gifts of knowledge with great reverence and pleasure.

Most of the tribals who had come as protectors had left in the first months, although a few had decided to make their homes around the mountain for they realised that the place and yeshe needed watching over.

Thenmozhi and Buddha walked every night around the perimeter of their new home and one went the other side and the other on the opposite side and then crossed each others path in a complete circle.

But apart from that, the very jungle itself was a barrier and also a protection for them and thenmozhi had learnt to pick up subtle signals and vibrations that the mighty trees and the tender grass stalks made. From the time the mark had appeared on her left breast, thenmozhis powers had expanded mightily and she was now a very powerful being in mind and in body.

It was just another night,a december night and it was nearing the end of the year and Thenmozhi was walking the path around their sanctuary, when she a pale glow emanate from a clearing near her. With her right hand reaching to the hilt of the sword that hung on her left waist, ready to draw, she tip toed towards the soft pale glow that was coming just ahead of her and found a tall man in white clothes standing quietly gazing at the stars.

Thenmozhi knew instantly who he was for although she had met him just once many years ago,the memory had burnt itself into her soul.

" yeshua."

The man looked at her and smiled and instantly Thenmozhi felt comforted and all her tensions seemed to just lift and vanish away.

Thenmozhi bowed " my lord.It has been a long time."

" time, thenmozhi is time and in the end is of no consequence for it pales when compared to life, actions and words."

He then turned and faced her and stared deep into her eyes " they are coming. They will be here soon for you and the young one."

Thenmozhi nodded " I know they would eventually come and i have been waiting for their return. But may i ask why you have returned my lord."

" the day before i was caught, tortured and then crucified,i stood on a night like this and stared into the sky and the stars spoke to me.I doubted until the last moment on what i should do and whether i should run away for i knew what the next day was going to bring. But my purpose stayed and steadied my mind and i went ahead with the plans made for me."

Thenmozhi looked away for she didn't want him to see the pain in her face for she knew what he had been put through and she had seen him as he took his last breath screaming " Father, forgive them for they know what they do."

" what do you want from me my lord? For i know that you are here for a reason."

yeshua looked at her " It is your time thenmozhi and soon all this will be over."

" what will become of the others and of yeshe? who will protect them when i am gone?"

" Life goes on thenmozhi.Life always goes on and has many warriors on her side to do battle against the bad and the evil."

Thenmozhi smiled and shrugging her shoulders " honestly,in a way i am happy that it is coming to an end and i am not even worried or scared about how it will end for once it ends it will be over."

They stood talking in whispers late into the night and into the early hours of morning. After he left,Thenmozhi slowly walked up the tall peak that lay near the waterfall and sat quietly waiting for the morning sun to rise and to warm her body with new energy.

Buddha came racing up the mountain and he roared loudly and thenmozhi sprang to her feet and the cat whispered " they are here"

" how many and how soon will they be here"

" I count at least 500 and they will be here in another four to five hours.I have no idea as to what means they used to enter the forest without alerting us but they have come and i hope we have enough time to mount a defence."

Thenmozhi held the tigers face in her hands and gently kissed his forehead " don't worry buddha. They might have entered the forest but they will never ever enter the sanctuary of our mountain. Now alert the others who live in the villages around us and tell them to vanish deep into the forest.i dont think that they are under any danger for these men have come for me and yeshe.Go now and warn the villagers and meet me at the entrance of our mountain home while i go ahead and look to the safety and protection of the women and the monks."

Buddha was about to race into the forest, when thenmozhi held him in a tight hug " my dear friend,i thank you for being by my side all this while and i cannot tell you in words how much that has meant to me.In case anything should happen, remember we will meet again some other time in some other life."

Buddha whimpered in fear as he felt a strange pain get a grip on his soul and he knew that something was terribly wrong " my queen, why, what is so different about these men.Let us go ahead and meet them where they are and let us hunt them and kill them all."

Thenmozhi shook her head " No buddha,it will not work for some of them carry weapons that pose grave danger to you and me.They have gone to great lengths to collect these weapons and i think they have waited patiently for this moment. But i think in the end they will lose and light will prevail against the darkness they bring."

Thenmozhi threw her arms around the tiger and both woman and beast stood in a tight embrace.

" now hurry buddha for every second matters and is the difference between life and death. We were born for this,to protect and defend those that need them.Hurry and see to it that everyone is safe.If there is any killing or dying today then it will only be us doing both."

Buddha roared and raced into the forest and thenmozhi stood watching him go and then turned to the rising sun and stood quietly as the light entered her.

She bowed to the sun " My lord,i don't know if you can hear me but i think you will be proud of me and buddha.I go to face our enemies and if i should fall, then tell our son who i was and that i redeemed myself honorably."

She drew her sword and turned towards the mountain caves and then towards the forest in the direction where the enemies were coming for her and yeshe and threw her senses forward.

It was like buddha had said and she counted 500 or more men marching silently through the forest and he was there, that mysterious old man with some strange aura.

Just a few more hours and then it would be ENDGAME.

"Yada Yada Hi Dharmasya Glanirva Bhavathi Bharatha,
Abhyuthanam Adharmaysya Tadatmanam Srijami Aham'.
Praritranaya SadhunamVinashaya Cha Dushkritam
Dharamasamsthapnaarthaya Sambhavami Yuge-Yuge."

"Whenever there is decay of righteousness O! Bharatha
And a rise of unrighteousness then I manifest Myself!"
"For the protection of the good, for the destruction of the wicked and
for the establishment of righteousness, I am born in every age."

The boy who went into the dark and came back with light.

AWAKENING-3

Mani hadn't asked for much when he had been alive and now that he was dead he asked for nothing but for the safety of shalini and his son. While alive, mani had been quiet and had lived a solitary life with his mother and then a little time with shalini and now dead he lived the same life although rahul his son was a new and welcome addition to his small company.

Whenever mani felt sad or lost,he came to this small but beautiful church and sat quietly in a corner, not that it mattered for he was dead and invisible, but because his old, solitary habits continued even after death.
Mani found that the early morning hours between 4 and 6 were the the quietest and the most peaceful hours for being in that church although the old man who came there by five a.m made it a crowd.

The old man was father Ronald selvakumar and not only was he nearly 85 years old,he was also blind in both his eyes. The man had come to this church when he was just 10 years old and had found grace and mercy in the Mother mary.

The church was called La Salette shrine and was built sometime in 1866.The La Salette Shrine was the first Catholic church in Kodaikanal and was funded by a generous donation of a Belgian woman who wanted to thank Our Lady of La Salette for the cure of her daughter. The cornerstone for this shrine was laid by a French missionary, Fr. Louis St. Cyr, S.J., in 1863 and the shrine was dedicated on Easter Sunday of 1866.The interior of the shrine is quite attractive. It is decorated with graceful statues of Our Lady of La Salette above the altar as well as the statue of St. Joseph. These statues were given by the Bishop of the Grenoble Diocese in France. The noteworthy and the decorative paintings on the windows inside the church were drawn by a French noblewoman named Madame Coile.

The shrine is a gathering place for the poor, weary or needy people. Our Lady of La Salette is seen as a universal mother giving solace and comfort to all pilgrims of all religions. It is a Shrine of blessing that offers on its holy ground a remedy for the many ills of its fervent pilgrims. It is visited by countless tourist and offers peace and solace for all.

True to his nature, mani never minded crowds and he certainly did not mind an old man being there while he enjoyed his solitude. But off late, mani suspected that the old man felt his presence and that was something he was curious about although he knew that it was very rare for beings in his state to cross over and make contact with the living.

But he also knew that shalini and rahul could see him and hear him because of the connections they had and those were bonds tied by a higher force.

Mani was not an Atheist or an Agnostic and knew that something,a power that humans called god was in the background quietly pulling the strings and running the show.

The reason mani came to this church was that not only did it offer a beautiful ambience, there was something more,a pulse,a vibration that made him feel comforted and secure, feelings that he felt only when he was near shalini and so he began to visit the church everyday in the early hours before the sun rose along with all the life that it governed and nurtured.

There had been a few times when his mother Aashritha had followed him but he knew it was because she worried about his safety, not that it mattered anymore now that he was dead and similar to her.

Mani's thoughts flashed back to that night on Apricot towers when he had thrown himself off the roof and he knew from that bloodcurdling scream that she had made, that it was something that she had not expected and even then in those micro seconds as his body plunged to the road below, she too had plunged after him,to save him but it had been too late.

Mani remembered every moment of that night, and seeing shalini's face with moon and stars above her as he felt for a very brief moment the impact to the back of his head and then it was over.

What he had not expected was to be alive still and yet have no body and he saw and remembered everything as his essence floated on air.His mother had vanished and he stood feeling the pain of shalini as she touched his dead cheeks and lips.

A case that could have become complicated was solved and closed with the help of Assistant commissioner Balasubramaniam and then shalini had left quietly to kodaikanal when she realised that she was carrying rahul.

It took nearly ten months and the arrival of rahul before he had shown himself to shalini and although it made her incredibly sad,she had accepted him and five years had passed peacefully until now.

Mani looked at the kind face of mother mary " Help me.Help my family and see that they are safe. This is all i ask from you.I have never prayed for myself bu i pray now for shalini and rahul.Watch over them and bless them with a quiet and peaceful life."

His quiet prayers were suddenly and rudely interrupted by a quivering and mild voice " Pray my son.pray for that is the only way in which god can hear us."

Mani froze in fear and shock and he turned to see the blind father ronald staring at him.

" I don't know who you are but your prayers sound sincere and true and i am sure she will do the needful. You don't have to be scared for you have committed no crime by being hers and you are only praying and i know you always pray for those two people. You must really love them and i hope they are aware of that."

Mani did not know what to say or how to respond to this unexpected intrusion and contact with a human being and that too who was alive and on the other side.

" I thought you are supposed to be blind and yet here you are talking to me.Can you see me?"

Father ronald chuckled " now who is really blind, me or you? of course i cannot see and i have not been able to see with these eyes for more than twenty years now."

" But what is seeing my son, when one can feel with his soul and hear with his ears.It is like god and like love for it can only be felt and yet not seen."

Mani did not know what to say and decided to remain silent for the moment and then father ronald stared in his direction and turned back to face mother mary who looked at both of them and everything with love.

" Don't worry about making conversation with me my child for like you i too enjoy this solitude and quiet contemplation about life and its purpose.I really hope your prayers are answered and i too will pray for you and your loved ones."

" thank you father for your kind words and prayers."

Father ronald nodded " anytime my son, anytime and if you should feel the need to talk, please do so for none talk to me nowadays as i am not only old but blind too."

Then slowly father ronald removed the thick cashmere shawl that was wrapped around him " take this my child for the air is unbearably cold today."

Mani smiled and wondered how this father could be so different from the one who had died last night at the hands of his mother " it is okay father and i think you will feel less cold soon and once i am gone."

Saying this mani vanished and made his way back to his house and to his place on the steps in front of the house.

Father ronald shook his head " what did he mean i will feel less cold once he is gone? poor soul,i hope he finds the salvation he is looking for."

He turned back and bending his head whispered a prayer to the lord.

"Dear Lord, I don't know who or what will cross my path today. But I do know that You are my Rock and my Fortress. You are my Shield and my Strong Tower. Help me to anchor myself to You today. Teach me how to stand strong in You and choose only Your way today. Help me walk by Your truth and not my feelings. Help me to embrace anything that comes my way as an opportunity to see You at work and as an opportunity to point others to You. Thank You that You love me and nothing can ever take that away from me! Even if I fail today and fall short, You whisper Your unconditional love deep into my soul and remind me that Your mercies are new every morning. That truly amazes me, Lord. Thank You for meeting with me today. Would You wake me again tomorrow with the same sweet whisper of Your love? I can't wait to meet with You again. In Jesus' Name, Amen."- Wendy Blight

Hi people,

I know that the return of the story "what if" with Mani,Shalini,Aashritha and now with the young Rahul was a bit of a surprise to you and for all those who followed the first story.

Just in case you have forgotten, let me remind you that i posted the first chapter of "what if" on january 5th,2014.Three years and a few months have passed since that first chapter although the reason for that story,Navin my kutty brother passed away much earlier than that.He might be gone but he is still alive in my soul and alive in my stories.

If we actually stop and think about what we feel we are then you maybe you might feel like me and that we are not on soul but a mixture of many others and their stories and memories. The soul is a safe deposit locker,a processor that takes everything that we touch, taste, see and feel with our hearts and makes its own and there you have it,you are not one soul, one person, one life but a co-operative society of souls and lives.

Writing Redemption was so tiring and so introspective that i thought i would write a light romance and jannal oram was born, although i admit that it is not a light romance anymore. That romance and the heaviness of redemption began to weigh so heavily that dark and dangerous thoughts curdled and soon sprang out as What if-the return.

Over the years, beginning from 2006,i have tested the waters of my own writing skills in this forum and a voyage of articles, poems, jokes and quotes aside,i finally began to write what if and here we are now,you and me with three stories running neck and neck and yet singing different tunes on different tracks.

You will be surprised that i have quite a few other stories and heroes and heroines who can talk for thirty, forty or more chapters.

There is one story called " the stranger" that i might begin to write and it is about a Psychiatrist and his schizophrenic patient who has committed many murders. The judge asks for a proper report from an authority on split personality disorder and if the accused should be made to stand trial or be put in an asylum for the insane.

I confess that i am trying to do my best to tell all these current stories differently and yet i fear that since it is the same person who is doing all the writing it might sound a bit repetitive and the vocabulary a bit boring.

I will leave you now with my thanks and giving you my best wishes for you and your families.Be well.

"What is perceived as normal. That makes it other people's failings. Deficits. Not yours. Who the hell sets the standards, huh? Who gets to say how we are supposed to be? Or who we are supposed to be? And how dare anyone make you feel inadequate for being who you are? It's not okay. It pisses me off." Jessica Park,

Jeevas day began at 6.00 a.m and she woke up always to the gentle sounds coming from the kitchen as her mother prepared breakfast and then something simple but tasty for lunch. She turned to see suja, her younger sister fast asleep on the cot on the other side of the room.

Today was friday and that meant, head bath cum oil body bath. This friday oil class had been going on for a pretty long time and it had been a pain when she was going to college because those days she used to rush out in a hurry to meet bharat and her mum used to yell her head off. Those college years had always been a rush, rushing into the house and rushing out of the house and the only time she had was for bharat and her friends.

Jeeva stood brushing her teeth and she remembered eating grilled corn with bharat in the beach and she looked at him " god,my mum was angry with me today.she kept harassing me to have an oil bath and i escaped from her clutches and made my exit quietly and i think my sister suja is going to get the brunt of the hot oil today."

Bharat leaned towards her " come a bit closer" and then buried his head in her hair and took a deep breath and then looked at her " baby,do you remember that scene in Thiruvilayadal between lord shiva and nakeeran."

Jeeva crunched her face "vaguely and some scene about the fragrance of women's hair."

Bharat smiled " yes.in that scene god argues that women have a natural fragrance in their hair and nakeeran says no and finally gets burnt and rightfully so for that sad bugger was not lucky to bury his nose in your hair."

Jeeva blushed " idiot, this is too much for i know you are pulling my leg. Here, i am telling you that i didn't have time to wash my hair and you are quoting from sanga tamil."

Bharat took a quick look around and seeing that it was dark and not many people were around, quickly planted a kiss on her mouth and then looked at the corn cob in his hand and then looked at her.

" This corn tastes better when eaten from your mouth."

Those memories were rudely disturbed by the bathroom door opening and the arrival of her mother with a large bowl of warm coconut oil.

Jeeva gargled, rinsed her mouth and looked at her mom " Kamakshi, endiamma ippadi torture pannre?"

Jeeva's mum kamakshi smiled " Nee konju, kenju. But in the end this oil is going on your head and your body."

A few minutes later, life found jeeva sitting like a small kid while her mum sat on the wooden stool and was rubbing in the oil and massaging her scalp.

This was one of the best moments of her life for her mothers finger not only massaged warm oil into her scalp but was also pouring her love and energy into her soul.

Jeeva looked up at her mother and then gently kissed both her palms " kamatchi,i love you dee."

Kamakshi smiled " me too dee my chellam."

Jeeva's face turned serious " i need to talk to you about suja and her future.Today evening because that is the only time she won't be in the house.okay."

Seeing her mum's face turning sad,jeeva worriedly " amma,what.ennachu."

Kamakshi shook her head " nothing jeeva.I am just feeling sad and also wondering about life and what all twists and turns it takes in each of our lives."

" amma, what are you going on about.I am not following you. Please kindly be more clear."

Kamakshi took jeevas left hand and slowly rubbed in some oil into the length of her arm " i know what you want to talk to me and appa about today evening. It is about suja and her boy friend."

Jeeva shocked " what? How?when did you know about all this?Did suja already talk to both of you."

Her mother with a patient and understanding smile " stupid baby. Both of us have been aware about this for the past few months. The whole neighbourhood is buzzing with excitement. And then i caught that boy dropping her off at the end of the street while i was on the terrace collecting the dried clothes. But i have to confess that most of the eligible bachelors in our neighbourhood are nursing broken hearts."

Jeeva sadly " so much has been going on and i the joker am the last person to know about all this.It is a wonder that i didn't get to hear this on sun thalaippu seithigal."

Kamakshi looked at her " sweetie, what about you and your future. How long are you going to be like this, sacrificing all your needs for your dad and me."

Jeeva smilingly " chee, podi.don't talk and act like nadigar thilagam.I am okay.lets get our baby married and then we will think about other things.but until then no more talk about me and my needs."

Jeeva buttoned her nightie and piling her hair into a bundle on top of her head and knotting it neatly stood lost in thought and remembered bharat telling her to wear her hair in that fashion for he liked to plant thousands of kisses on the nape of her neck and nibble her ears without her long hair in the way.

She stepped out of the bathroom and saw her dad standing there and both father and child looked at each other and sadly shared a smile and he nodded " Thank you baby.Thank you for everything."

Jeeva softly " i feel like i am watching a scene between shivaji and savithri."

jeevas dad manigandan smiled " jokes aside,at some point we have to talk about your future."

He looked at her and jeeva knew when that tone and nodded " okay appa.We will talk in detail tonight."

He held her hand as she crossed him " are your kisses meant only for your mother and sister?"

Jeeva smiled and planted a kiss on both his cheeks and then on on his forehead and looked at him " dei mani, you understand my situation,no"

Manigandan nodded " even if you say it or don't say it,my soul hears everything, even the breath that you take."

Kamakshi joined them and father, mother and daughter exchanged glances and in that glances exchanged their souls and breathed and lived as one.

Small spelling mistakes and corrections of sentences have been made and edited.

I write the chapters early in the morning and i guess i am so groggy that even the cups of filter coffee do nothing to removes the cobwebs from my brain.

The chapter is close to all our lives as children and i remember how uneasy i used to feel at the sight of oil and the process of it and all those festivals when my grandmom and aunts used to herd me and the other kutty cousins for oil bath. But new clothes and sweets reduced the torture and that my hair did not become the color of pithamagan vikram is blessing enough.

I only remember a very little of my mother bathing me but i still remember them.

Real lives and real stories are more senti and dramatic than tv serials and films and also more scarier and sadder.

I wish all of you a happy tamil new year,a Happy vishu and a blessed Good friday.

I hope god in whatever form he is gives you all that you pray to him for and blesses you and your families with peace and happiness.
