In every society some men are born to rule, and some to advise. - Ralph Waldo Emerson
And then, the time for lunch with VVIP Vijaya bhaskar came and the man himself came along with Nellaiappan and as one,the small group made it to the dining hall.
Raman noticed as Vijaya bhaskar gave a meaningful glance at mr.Nellaiappan who taking the cue requested the camera men and the photographers to give everyone a small break,a respite from all the flashes and attention and they gracefully acknowledged the request and in turn requested the minister's son for a small press meet after lunch and before he left the venue.
Vijaya bhaskar nodded and told them that he would spare a few minutes and then throwing his arm around Raman, entered the dining venue and stopped for a second to whisper ' politics, politics and it will always be politics.I tried my best but my dad refused to let me go abroad and so here i am neck deep in our state politics.'
Raman looked at Vijay with affection and respect ' your dad did the right thing and i as a citizen of this state will welcome you with open arms and vote for you when you contest in the coming elections and i hope soon, very soon you become what your dad could not and now dreams of that post for you .For i know your party is grooming you to become the next chief minister.'
Vijaya bhaskar stood staring at raman ' so you do keep in touch with what is happening in the political scene.'
Raman nodded ' Always and i am happy for you and i will be even more happier for this state when you rise and stand tall as the next leader of this great land, for today this land needs new, young and honest people to lead us all in a new and more wonderful direction than that has been done for the past few decades.'
Vijay looked at raman ' if that is your wish for me and for your state then why is that we are sitting in each other's chairs when it is men, great men like you that should be leading and guiding this state for it is right now in a real mess although we are trying to do our best with what we have and also with the central governments help.'
Raman smiled ' Vijay, you know me pretty damn well and you know that i am not cut out for such stuff and will never be,not in this life.'
Vijaya bhaskar nodded ' okay, but when the time comes i will call on you for your counsel and for your guidance and promise me that you will not refuse me.'
Raman ' i promise ' and then vijay taking out his mobile ' please, tell me your number' and quickly dialed the number and called him back and looking at raman ' that is my personal number which only my parents and sister have and now you have it.Please stay in touch.'
The lunch went off quietly and then the bride grooms parents requested Vijaya bhaskar to pose with their side of family and he got up looking at raman ' i suppose it is time for you to leave' and raman ' yes vijay,i have to be in court later this afternoon and have to go to my office before that.so yes,i have to leave.'
Both shook hands and vijay again hugged raman and said good bye and then again touched raman's parents feet in respect and shaktivel gently hugged vijay ' Iyya, you too are like my son now and thank you for giving us all this love and respect.'
Vijay looked at shaktivel and valliammai ' thank you and your words mean a lot to me,much more than all this status and limelight.thank you.'
Vijay looked at raman who nodded and left with his parents and an ordinary day had become an extraordinary one.
He stood patiently as the photos were clicked and videos were taken along with a million selfies and then walked towards the entrance where a dozen tv camera crews stood with their microphones extended and camera already rolling.
Vijay bhaskar looked at all of them ' okay, please ask your question and kindly keep it simple.'
The thanthi tv reporter raced ahead with her question ' sir,who was that gentleman who you spent so much time talking with and it appeared that both of you are very close, really close to each other.'
State cabinet minister Durai pandi arumugam's eldest and only son,Vijaya bhaskar smiled and looked at all of them ' That gentleman was my college senior,my dear friend,my savior and most importantly my elder brother who i never had.'
Pausing for a moment,he looked at all of them ' if people like him were in politics and were given the charge of caring for this state,i swear to you that this state and country will soon be Number one in this world.'
The maruti dezire sedan of Uber was slowly cruising towards saidapet and raman was seated in the front with his parents in the back seat.
After trying to control their curiosity for nearly ten to fifteen minutes,Valliammai burst out ' ram, what was all that about with mr.vijaya bhaskar?' and the uber driver turned sharply towards and raman and then glanced hurriedly at his parents ' sir, sorry.but are you talking about our future leader, the great vijaya bhaskar?'
and raman shook his head ' sorry, but we are talking about a family friend who shares the same name i guess.I am sorry to disappoint you.'
The driver launched himself ' varanum sir, iyya vijaya bhaskar mathiri neraya nalla allunga varanum.enough of all this corruption and rowdyism that this so called dravidian parties have been indulging in for these past 50 years or so.'
Raman kept quiet and both shaktivel and valliammai knew that there was a great story behind him and vijaya bhaskar and respecting their son remained quiet without asking any further questions.
Raman closed his eyes and thought back to the time, that fateful evening when he had fought single handedly against nearly eight men who had come to kill vijaya bhaskar and his sister Kavitha and he sighed in fear for he knew that if he had not been there then both would have been slaughtered and the reason was not only political but some deeper and darker feud.
Sitting in the plush leather seat of his bullet proofed Audi q4,Vijaya bhaskar took out the black I phone and dialed and hearing his sister's voice ' I finally met him and that too at the wedding hall and he is the same humble, kind and sweet person.Yes.i have his number and i will forward it to you.But kavitha, send him a message first and then call and talk to him.Please,okay.Bye.'
Vijaya bhaskar leaned back and placing his head on the head rest stared at the world outside and recollected how he and his sister after spending time in the library preparing for the coming exams had come out to the parking lot to get into their car and suddenly a gang of eight men armed with knives and other deadly weapons had come charging towards them and Raman happened to be coming out of the library at the same time and had saved them.He had pushed him and his sister into the library and had asked them to lock the doors from inside and also he had then locked the doors from outside and then just when he and his sister kavitha had feared the worst and feared for raman's life,he had stood with a smile and effortlessly thrashed and broken the arms and legs of most of the eight men and just like that it had finished. But raman had hit one guy so badly that the man had fainted and carrying him and placing him in their car, raman had asked vijay to call his father who had then been the hand loom minister and everything had been taken care off and also hushed up.
The attack had been launched by one of their own partyman who had lost the minister's berth and so had decided to use some goonda's from another state to kill vijay and his sister kavitha and eventually kill his parents too.
Raman, and only because of raman he and his family still lived and yet the man who was responsible for all that had gone on with his life without even a backward glance. But he had requested in very strong words to be left out of the matter and had warned that he might be forced to leave the college if his name was given any publicity.
Publicity, not that he needed any of it for his exploits in Judo had already made him famous in college as he was the reigning state champion and also one of the top contenders in the national level and everyone had been sure that he was soon going to be crowned champion and then it was on to the world championships. But all that had come to naught when raman had broken his leg badly and had been bed ridden for many months and after that he had slowly faded out and had taken a back seat status and remained in the shadows.
But for vijay and kavitha, raman remained their savior and guardian and somehow vijaya bhaskar knew that their paths would cross again and he hoped that he would be able to repay the debt though it was one which could never ever be repaid not in this birth and countless other ones.
