Jagdu, why are you complaining? Your mom is obviously making the 9 sundals and you get to taste the sweets from everyone else's house when she goes goluing. Here my husband and father wait to see what goodies I bring back from other people's houses. Every evening my husband wants to know what sundal I have made that day, and he makes sure to take his share before I have even tasted it! Oh, I get it, your mom makes you chauffeur her around and you are having to wait at people's homes. Never mind, just keep thinking of all the sweets and sundals and you will be fine.

Wow! I have not visited this thread since my last post and so many information posted here which I nearly missed. Thanks for the information Jaz. It is interesting to know how the Navarathri is celebrated in different part of India/world.👏👏

Netra sweetie ...... Maybe you are not aware, but in Malaysia gollu is held at some homes. Usually at homes of Brahmin people or homes of rich. (Go to Pantai Hills, if you want to get a glimpse. LOLs) My mom got invited to both homes. Karthi and I or my brothers were brought along. So there. 😛

Anyway, I go to Pillayar temple near my home, and they do have gollu here as well. Most of the dolls and statues are brought in from India. So the gollu is arranged like there is a story to it. It is very interesting actually. We put the kumbhum in front of the gollu and spread navathani (is it correct?) surrounding the kumbhum. Prayers are held and thevaram are sung for all the goddesses. By the 10th day, the navathani shoots are up. On the Vijayadhasmi day, the priest will enact a small act "the good over the evil" , by shooting colourful arrows all over the place, and cutting down a banana tree (young stem), and put red kungkamam, to show flow of blood. Then he takes the kumbhum around the temple, and dumps into the water tub. Then after the prayers, the navathani shoots are distributed. When we were children we brought the books to the temple, and left it near the prayer area. Karthi and I bring the books which we are weakest in (well I am!!! 😳) and leave it there for few hours. Somehow I hoped miracles will happen and I will score A for my weakest subject if I left the books there. Sigh.. but that was never the case! We take the navathani shoots and put it in the book.

For all the ten days, each day different type of food is given out. Ponggal or pulisor, sundal (diff types), avaal and with either mothagam or vadai or kolkatai or poodi kolkatai or paasiper urundai. Some people who do special pooja bring their own sweets like laddu or kesari. When I was working near my home/temple, I used to go home early and each day I used to make somekind of dish for the prayers like lime rice, yoghurt rice, boonda, vadai, etc. I miss doing them now.

Netz, Mariamman temple is a big temple and right in the centre of town. So they have collection and richness in their deco. You should make effort to go to small temples or out off places temple. They are equally in match if not better with Mariamman temple. I heard Lakshmi Narayanan temple is nothing less.

Glad to hear about your daughters venture and about their dancing. After navarathi, it is deepavali, then kandashasti, then karthigai vilaku, and then thiruvambai. Never ending story isn't?

Oh Caryn thanks for the infor dear ....... Yup, amma and attai was telling me about the house visiting. Its me who did not know about it lols 😉 I am going to different other temples too hun. So far i went is KL mariaman temple, Vinayagar temple in Pudu, vinayagar temple in klang, Sivan temple at bukit gasing (which is good too), Perumal temple and Lakshimi Narayanan too 😉
and i love the last day, vijayadhasmi hun. Its really fun to see the evil, which is made from paper getting burn off. I mean, the whole celebration is really fun.
And Caryn, Lakshimi Narayanan temple ...... mind blowing. Its really really beautifull and the decor and statues ... sigh ... really. But another interesting temple i went to was Amman temple in Cheras. What was different here is, they make a small girl from the age 4-6, one gal a day. They dress the gal exact like how they dress the amman, and what ever they do for the amman, for example the arti and etc, they do the same for the girl. A believe that the god is in the small girl. And the prasadam that they serve infront of amma, the aiyar feeds the girl. Which makes the ladies who cooked it happy. Well everyone says Children are good. So the little girl is treated as amman for the day.
Its really nice to see the little girl sitting there, right infront of the big amman statue, looking like amman 😳 The day we went for during durga pooja, and the little girl looked simply amazing with black saree. I dun think i've seen this kind happening in other temples. This is the first actually me seing it. At the end of the pooja, three married ladies does finaly arathi for the little girl.
And caryn, me too clearly remember how i had taken my books for the saraswathy pooja day (the subject that im weak at 😛) to get the blessings. Its so fun at that time.
And have to admit with you, next is deepavali, then kandashasti, karthikai ... the list just goes on. But u taking fast for kandashasti hun? My attai and amma does. So am planning to start for this year. Only problem is vinod and mama & the valles complaining on vegie dishes through till the end of the year 😆

Hey Netz, only yesterday, there was the photograph of the temple in Cheras which y ou were talking about. 😊 in the newspaper
I showed it to mum, and she said, she once went to Nageswari temple in Bangsar and this was the same ritual there. Only the first 3 days, they do it to old women (who are 60 and above), then 3 days later to women who are in 40s and the last 3 days to little girls. She said they called something for this ceremony, but I cannot remember what it was. ☺️

You have left out Thiruvadhirai in between, then Pongal, then Sivaratri, then Rama Navami, and then Tamil New Year's Day, and then finally there is a break.
