Vijayadashmi: The triumph of righteousness
Its the final day and the most auspicious day in hindu calendar. This festival of victory is preceded by worship of Saraswati the godddess of Learning and of Durgaa the goddes of Strength. Processions of all gods are taken out in most town or villages on thisday, to show the victory of the forces of righteousness over those of wickedness. Lots of names for the goddess of Strength, Durga maa, Mahaa Kaali maa, Mahishasure Mardini maa and lots more under which that supreme protectress of the good and the holy put rout time, time and again, the demoniac forces and established the supremacy of the righteous.
Its the story of how Mahishaasura Mardini took birth is striking for its unique message. At one stage of the Gods felt powerless against the onslaughts of the demoniac forces headed by Mahishaasura. In answer to their prayers for protection, they were ordered to part with a portion of their divine powers to form into a new Goddness. It was thus that Mahishaasure Mardini took on a physical form as the combined might of 33 crores of gods. The dreaded Mahishaasura was slain by Chaamundeshwari after a ceaseless fight of nine days and nine night. And the look and beauty of victory in the Goddess face can be clearly seen. Priest makes sure SHE looks more victory kind. I really like this day the most. A kind of peace in the heart upon seing Amma's victory and peace face after the Mahishaasura is burned down.

Thanks Netra for the beautiful picture of Durga devi or Mahishasuramardhini. On this day, the residents of Kolkata take their Durga idols to the river for immersion, and there are processions everywhere. It seems as if the whole city is out on the streets, and that speaks for a lot of crowding. The idea in it is that Devi has come to her parents' home for resting after slaying Mahishasura and is now returning to her celestial abode, and some of the residents are in tears at this bidaai. I remember going on the trucks in the procession, and we would all be singing and having a great time, till the actual immersion, when the atmosphere becomes somber and you can actually feel that you are saying goodbye to Devi. Those are wonderful memories. Thanks Netra.

You have left out Thiruvadhirai in between, then Pongal, then Sivaratri, then Rama Navami, and then Tamil New Year's Day, and then finally there is a break.

Eljay, that is because with exception of POngal, Thaipusam and Tamil New Year, many Malaysians do not observe the others unless they do it in their own homes. Frankly speaking 😳 this is the first time I am hearing of Thiruvadhirai, Rama Navami. What are these festivals. Only some temples/people observe Sivaratri.
Thanks for the pics and article about VijayaDhasmi Netz. I got stuck in the traffic jam, so I was not able to get to temple on time as such I did not go.

Okay, this is news to me. Rama Navami celebrates Sri Rama's birthday. Thiruvadhirai is dedicated to Siva, but I will have to look it up to see what it celebrates. For Rama Navami, we make kosumalli, paanagam and neer moru, and for Thiruvadhirai, we make something called Thiruvadhirai KaLi, which is eaten with ThaLagam or 7 Thaan kuzhambu or kaavathu curry, Kaavathu being something that looks like chenai or yam. This kaavathu curry is eaten mainly by people from a Kerala background, the rest of TN eats either ThaLagam or 7 thaan kuzhambu. I will put up the recipes one of these days for KaLi and curry.

Thanks for the explanation Eljay. But caryn is right. Rama Navami is something new. But thiruvadurai, we do practise it here. Normally is grand in sivan temple. Caryn, Sivan temple in bukit gasing does this daa.

And caryn, too bad u missed the vijayatasdmi yesterday. And i only notice ur sms later part. It was great. But the rain spoiled most of the things. The prayers got delayed as they had to wait for the rain to stop. Most of us got wet, but the prayers went on well.
