Hello everyone! Since we are on the topic of Navarathri, how are you all celebrating it? Do you go goluing from one house to the next? Do you do it at home? Here we go goluing and by the time we are done, we say we are all golued out, because the houses are all in different directions, and it takes about 15 minutes to go from one house to the next, and then spend about 20minutes there, and then ... Luckily, we have only one or two people who sing, so most of us just leave after 15 minutes. The big problem is, the goody bags. This has become like a competition here, with each person getting the latest kind of bag from India, and people like me, who go there about once in six or seven years, who give it in the usual brown paper sandwich bags! Then we have the sweets to put in the goody bags, there again, we have people who make exotic stuff like walnut burfi, and people who make the tried and trusted stuff like mysore pak, cashew kathli, peda, maida burfi (that's me!).

Let me not forget the dolls. We have people who get their dolls from India, all the latest sets, then they make the parks and playgrounds and railway stations, etc., then there are people like me, with a mishmash of Ganesha idols, Krishna idols, Lakshmi, Saraswathy etc., and who arrange these on the steps, or in a shelf, as I have done this year.

The main thing, though, is the annual airing of the silks! I get to wear saris I do not always wear during the year, so the whole atmosphere is one of fun.

Do let me know how it is done in Malaysia and other places.

Hey Eljay, thanks for sharing this naa. Regards goin around, dats so much fun yaar. It wud be nice to see gollu of others too. Im not sure if its been practise here in malaysia, but for myself or family, we never did it. Its the normal routine for me where i will do dishes like pulli sadham, kacang etc for the prayers. Temples in the morning. But big pooja is held in the evenings and after the pooja there will be performances by lil gals and adults on veenai, sanggetham and bharathanatyam. For my family, we visit different temples on each night. And this year its extra special for me as its the first time my gals performing for bharathanatyam and Veenai ... 😊

Netra, what is kacang? Here we make sundal and a sweet.

This is so good to hear that your girls are learning Bharata natyam and Veenai. I used to learn the veena once upon a time, but didn't spend any time with it after I got married, and then finally my mother sold the veena to someone. I really feel bad about it sometimes. Nalladhor veenai seidhai ...

When I lived in Texas, we started small by just inviting each other for haldi kumkum, and then it slowly grew, with one person doing golu, and then others followed suit. It is so much fun for young girls and children on the whole. Maybe you can start it in Malaysia.

I even tried to do a vilakku puja once, but someone's paper plate caught fire, so I stopped doing that. This year another friend is doing a vilakku puja on Friday, and she has asked everyone to bring silver plates!

Thanks for all the info, Jas. So how are you celebrating navarathri, Guju or Bengali or South Indian or Delhi style?

I meant sundal (kacang is malay word here lols)

You did Eljay?? I had to give up when i went to Melbourne to study. But i never sold my salanggai and veenai. Its still with me. . And yes Eljay, im preety excited about their perfomance for the first time.
Yup, maybe visiting is not a bad idea. I cud start by visiting my relations. But then again, maybe someone here does practise that but im not to sure naa.

Good topic Netra.. thanks for opening it.... 👏
I'm sure you must be feeling really excited to see your girls on the stage doing bharathanatyam for the first time.. Good Luck & Enjoy! 😊
Thanks Jas for sharing all those information... 😊
Eljay, I remember all those Golu visits we do... back in India when I was a kid, I like this time of the year, as we get to go to different houses everyday and play with friends, get sundal..etc. I haven't learnt sangeetham anyday in my life... but ellamae Kelvi nyaanam... you know! 😳😆😆. I used to sing songs without any hesitation and move on.... 😃
Here where I am now... the Golu invitations, visits ...are happening exactly the way how you had described it. with sundal, prashadam, goody bags, gifts.. etc. etc. This year infact I have got too many Golu invitations and my weekend seems to be filled with all these Golu invitations and nothing else. One good thing is, in our family we don't do 'Golu' , so it's only we get to visit all others.... ! 😉 We celebrate Saraswathi pooja and I do make some specials and pray god on that day both morning and evening!!
But it's totally fun & I feel very good as my dd loves to join me in her nice silk outfit (pattu pavadai, sattai) and she started singing too ... from this year!! Unlike her mommy, she knows what's she is up to, as she is learning 'sangeetham' from a nice teacher(Guru)!! 😃

y'all,
finally the jagdu family fell into the navaratri trap too. Golu's happened over a few stacked cardboard boxes. 9 different sundals need to be made for 9 days(Kavita, come and save me?).
Now that we've done it this year, the tradition needs to continue the next?
