Neil had got a tip off about Vidyut's next consignment from one of his sources. He had not been handling all Vidyut's security lately since he had suggested that someone else look after the majority of his security since Neil was busy with several cases and he didn't want to put too much pressure on him. Neil knew it was because he suspected he was Neo and wanted to try and keep some of the information regarding his consignments hidden from him. However, he didn't know that he had a man inside the VR camp that tipped him off. The other people that tipped him off were the 123 gang, who had hacked the phone of one of VR's men. Therefore, Neil knew how Avni found out where Neo was going. It was from her old gang mates. They were too loyal to their "Avni Di" to not tell her things. He didn't want to put them in an awkward position by telling them not to tip off Avni.
So as per the next set of information which had come from the 123 gang, Neo had set off to ruin the plans of Vidyut's men one more time. Neil was hiding out at a warehouse where a consignment of drugs were expected to arrive and as expected sometime later Avni turned up there too.
"So what's happening today?" she asked Neo as she took her position behind him where he was hiding behind a wall of boxes.
"Tum phir se agayi? Where do you get your information? It's always spot on!" said Neo with a twist to his lips.
"I told you I have my sources. All you need to know is, I want Vidyut to go down as much as you do, and whatever I can do I will do. Also, I am not some chui mui ladaki. I am a trained fighter and I used to be a thief. Thori bohot vigilantepan muje main bhi hai!" said Avni with her head held high.
"Ok fine. Maan gaye aap ko! I am sure you know what you're doing. But this is Vidyut R and he is a pohonche huwe criminal of the highest order! So be cautious. That's all I am saying!"
"Trust me Neo. Main Vidyut ko bohot achai se janti hu. I know what he's about and what he can do. But he won't get away for too long!"
"Agreed on that!" said Neo as they heard a sound from inside the warehouse. He gestured for Avni to be silent, and they slowly moved forward to see what was going on. As expected they saw a bunch of men moving around, loading the truck, and it was full of bicycles. But inside the tyres of the bicycles were small bags of white powder. The consignment was being sent as bicycles being donated to needy kids as part of Vidyut's many "fronted" charity projects. But in that guise drugs were being transported too.
They waited for a while and when some of the men started to move away, Neo crept close to the truck and threw an explosive into the open truck. Suddenly there was chaos everywhere as the men started running around. Neil ran back to the spot where they were taking cover and one of Vidyut's men spotted him and came forward, but before he could get too close, Avni moved out from the side and sprayed the man's eyes with Pepper spray. He yelled and started rubbing his eyes and Avni gestured for Neil to move on. He hesitated and she mouthed "Go!" to him. He shook his head and Avni came running towards him quickly.
As she reached Neil she grabbed him by his collar and pushed him behind a group of boxes, as they heard another one of Vidyut's men come running towards where the other was yelling with his eyes closed.
Neil was pinned against the wall of boxes and Avni was still holding his collar.
"Ni...Neo...I thought I said for you to go?" she said to him in a whisper.
"I wasn't going to go without you!" he whispered back.
"Well next time..." She was saying when Neil put his finger on top of her lips to stop her from talking. He gestured with his eyes that there was someone coming. Avni reflexively moved a bit closer to Neil and she lost her balance for a second and he put his arm around her waist to steady her. Avni looked up at him as now their faces were only inches apart. She looked into his eyes and for a moment she was lost. Avni's lips instinctively moved closer to him as she closed her eyes.
Neil started down at Avni and saw her closed eyes and her slightly parted lips. It was like she was anticipating a kiss. He breathed in sharply as he realized that Avni wanted Neo to kiss her. He stared at her for a moment longer. Then he closed his eyes as if to gather his composure and opened them again.
"They're gone!" he said curtly. When she didn't open her eyes right away, he said "Ananya!" at which she opened her eyes slowly. "They're gone! You can let go of me now!"
Avni suddenly realized the situation they were in. How she had almost clung to Neo and wanted him to kiss her. Well, in fact, she had wanted Neil to kiss her. Being in his arms for a moment she had forgotten who he was, and who she was supposed to be. They were not Avni and Neil but Neo and Ananya.
"I...I'm sorry..." murmured Avni, as she stepped away from him quickly.
Neil merely nodded but said nothing. Avni turned away from him for a minute and closed her eyes and pursed her lips. What must Neil think of her now? That she was willing to kiss another man? Yes, she had needled him and joked about kissing Neo. But she realized how this must look to Neil. Yes, she wanted him to admit that he was Neo. But she didn't want him to think she was willing to two time him. That she was willing to fall into the arms of another man just coz he was like her, someone who bent the rules. Yes, Neil was textbook. But that is why they were perfect for each other. That is why her Mother had wanted her to marry him. Because she knew Neil could keep her in line. The only reason he even became Neo was because of her. Because he wanted to avenge her against Vidyut. If not, someone like Neil would never break the law.
"Neil...you have no idea...tumai pata bhi nahi hai...how I feel about what you are doing. How much I respect you for who you are and how much I appreciate you for bending the rules just to bring down Vidyut. To find that loophole in the system. You can trust me. Your secret is safe with me. Why won't you tell me, why?" she said to herself before turning around to look at Neil.
"Neo...I...I should go!" she said slowly.
"Yes!" he said as their eyes met for a second. "Yes you should go Ananya!" he said his eyes cold.
"Bye...goodnight!" she said hesitantly.
"Shab bakhair!" he said, and for a moment Avni looked at him and gave a small smile. She remembered her Mom used to say that.
"Shab bakhair!" she said softly as she turned on her heel and left from there. She got Sheru to drop her home, and as she was about to get out of the car, Sheru turned to Avni and said in a serious tone.
"Avni di...maaf karkna...lekin apan ko lagta hai ke aap ko Neil sir ke saath yeh game khelna band kar dena chahiye!" he said.
Avni looked at Sheru, her eyes serious too.
"Muje patha hai Sheru. Trust me, yeh kartai huwe muje bhi acha nahi lagta!" said Avni with a sigh.
"Aisa hai toh Aap unai kyon nahi batati ke aap ko sab malum hai?" asked Sheru with a shake of his head.
"Sheru...tum samaj nahi rahe ho...I wish it was that simple! But Neil needs to trust me. He needs to tell me what he is doing. Yeh roz roz ka raaz muje bardasht nahi! Main uski patni hu Sheru. Usse muje sach batana chahiye. Did you know, ek pati aur patni ko ek dooserai ke khilaaf gawai dene ke liye court bhi unai majboor nahi kar saktai? Aisa hai ek shadi shuda couple ka rishta. Law se bhi upar hai! Iss liye, Neil chahe kisi ka khoon bhi karai, usse muje bata dena chahiye, kyon ki main uski patni hu. I am his wife!" said Avni with feeling.
"Apan samaj saktai hai Avni di. Lekin Neil sir ke bhi kuch majbooriya hai. Wo DD ko bhi sach nahi bataya hai. Shayad wo aap ko protect karna chatha hai? Think about it!" he said with a small smile.
"Thank you Sheru. Please call me when you get the next tip-off!"
"Wil do!" he said as Avni got out of the car.
"Goodnight!" they said to each other as Avni stealthily made her way back into Khanna house through a back door. She slowly crept back into their room and quickly went into the bathroom and changed out of her black tights, boots and hoodie. She quickly had a shower, changed into her night clothes and took the clothes she was wearing and put them into a cupboard in a spare room that no one hardly visits. She then made her way quickly back to her room.
She sat down on the bed and started looking at her phone when she heard a sound as the door to their bedroom opened and Neil walked in. He was wearing pants and a t-shirt, but no trace of Neo to be seen. Neil turned around and closed the door. He then glanced towards the bed and saw her sitting there. They stared at each other for a moment. Both trying to mask what the other was feeling. Neil said nothing to Avni as he moved further into the room and went to the cupboard and took out his clothes and went towards the bathroom. He stopped for a moment and pursed his lips as he balled one of his fists. He felt Avni's eyes boring into his back and he just walked forward and into the bathroom and closed the door behind him. Avni heard the click of the lock and sighed. The sound was so soft yet it almost sounded like a loud siren. Avni had seen the flash of pain in Neil's eyes when he walked in the door and saw her, just before he masked his expression, and it had killed her inside. This was not what she'd wanted when she had started this game. "Neil...I'm sorry...!" She whispered to herself as tears pricked her eyes.
Neil stood under the shower as he tried to take deep breaths to calm himself down. He had thought he had calmed down on his drive back to the house. But seeing Avni again had brought back all the feelings he had been suppressing since she left. Neil could feel the bitter taste of betrayal on his tongue at the thought that Avni had wanted Neo to kiss her. He had thought that Avni could never betray him. He had always believed in their love, their connection, chemistry, passion. He had thought nothing could ever counter that. When Avni was in his arms, the response she gave him had always reassured him that no other man could take his place. That she would never want intimacy with someone else. But tonight...ALL that had been shot out of the water. Yes, ironically the other man was actually him. But it was still not him. Neo was someone else. He was not Neil. The betrayal was that in that moment when they had been close, Avni had wanted that closeness with Neo, not Neil. This went beyond jealousy now. That was a petty feeling compared to the burning hurt inside him. Neil could feel the warm salt on his tongue along with the warm water of the shower. He switched off the shower and took a deep breath.
"Calm down Neil. Play it cool. Don't let her see how much she's hurt you!" he told himself as he dried himself, got into his tracks and t-shirt and walked into the room.
Avni was still sitting on the bed, fiddling with her phone, pretending to be reading something.
"So which actor's fans are stressing out that he's going to get married soon, or better still... wants him to date no one but his co-star?" asked Neil drily.
"Ha?" asked Avni as she looked up.
"You're on social media right? So what else could be getting discussed there?"
"No..no...I was just reading an article!" Avni fibbed.
"What about? Housewives that get bored with their lives and looking for excitement?" asked Neil.
"What?" asked Avni looking at him sharply.
"Oh, I was just referring to an article I read this week. Sounds like a relevant topic these days. Housewives who get bored with their husbands!" said Neil his lips pursed. (Neil...what are you doing? What happened to your resolve to play it cool?) he reprimanded himself.
Avni knew where the sarcasm and the remarks were coming from. Neil was accusing her of being one of those bored housewives looking for excitement. Did he really think she would want any other man but him? He was this smart law enforcer? Didn't his powers of observation tell him how she felt about him? The way she responded to him alone should show him how crazy she was about him. All he had to do was touch her and she melted. How could a woman like that cheat on him?
"Well it's just as well I get all the excitement I can handle at home!" said Avni darting a quick look at Neil.
"Really?" asked Neil went and sat down on the couch instead of the bed and picked up a book that was on the coffee table.
"Do you want a coffee Neil?" asked Avni hesitantly.
"Nothing but Dad's special coffee will do right now!" muttered Neil.
"I think Papaji is sleeping, or else I would have asked him to make you one. But you can tell me how he makes it, and I will make one for you!" said Avni, eager to pacify Neil.
"No thanks!" said Neil curtly.
"Neil...Is everything OK?" asked Avni hesitantly, mostly to see if he would open up to her.
That made Neil snap and he got up from the couch and walked towards the bed. Avni looked at him with wide eyes as Neil came to the bed, and leaned over her, trapping her between his arms.
"You tell me Avni!" said Neil looking at her squarely. "Did you really think I don't know where you've been?"
Avni sighed. "Neil...listen to me...I... " she started saying when Neil cut her off.
"No. YOU listen to me Avni! I told you once before, I don't want you going out with a vigilante. No matter how great and special you think he is, he is still breaking the law. Tumai samaj mai atha hai yeh? Do you get that? The more you go out with him the higher the risk you take?"
"I...told you that it's a risk I'm willing to take, in fact, I took that risk before when I was case 123!" said Avni in a slightly defiant tone.
"Yes that was when you were Case 123, when you were Ananya Verma. But now you are Avni Neil Khanna. ACP Neil Khanna's wife!" he said harshly.
"So that is all I am? ACP Khanna's wife? I have no identity of my own? My husband doesn't think I deserve to know what's going on in his life? she said angrily.
"Do you tell me what's going on in your life Avni? Or should I say Ananya?"
"What's that supposed to mean?" asked Avni.
"Why don't you tell me?" said Neil. Then he paused and looked at her squarely. "Get this straight...if you want to meet Neo, go ahead, if you want to Hero worship him, do so, if you feel you have a bond, cherish it...but if you get caught...don't expect me to save you! I won't hesitate in arresting you!" said Neil harshly.
"Like you ever did? What else will a police officer do with a criminal right?" asked Avni bitterly.
"Oh so we are back to that again? The Police and criminal game? Well, guess what? Your right! I won't spare a criminal, and if you're that criminal I won't spare you!" he said as he moved away from her.
He started to walk towards the door and Avni called out to him.
"Neil...Neil...where are you going?"
"Don't worry. I am not going to meet some Sautan of yours if that's what's bugging you! I'm not a cheat!" said Neil with a sarcastic smile as he opened the door.
"Neil..." said Avni again when he cut her off.
"Not now...Ananya...Why don't you go to sleep and dream of Neo?" he said bitterly as he walked out closing the door behind him.
Avni started at the closed door. This was going from bad to worse. She needed to do something. But what? Even after all this, he had not cracked and told her he was Neo. She had to make him realize that she loved him, the real him. Not Neo. Just Neil. Her Neil!
