Neil's POV
It wasn't as if they were really married.
It was a fake marriage that would last for a limited amount of time. They both would help each other. Her, by not breaking the law and trusting the police force, or more specifically, by trusting him. Him, by helping her get justice for her mother.
They didn't sleep in the same bed, he didn't put sindoor in her maang each morning, or tell her to put her manglasutra on. She didn't badger him on when he came home late, even if she was worried sick in those 15 minutes of his tardiness. He didn't ask her who she was on the phone laughing with, even though he secretly wished for once that her laughter was because of him.
So when Neel had to bring Avni to his work party, as his partner, he didn't expect his fellow officers gushing about her. Not that she wasn't pretty, she was beautiful in fact, but he knew she was no supermodel type like Riya. He just didn't expect her to be wearing a black silk suede western gown, with her hair half up and half down. Her lips adorned with red lipstick, and her eyes always having that magnificent kohl, were done up with smoky eyed eyeshadow. She looked killer, she looked femme fatale.
Not that he was scared that she wouldn't be taken advantage off. His Miss Ajooba was a sherni. He just expected her to shrug off the hands left lingering on her arms quite immediately. She didn't. She was laughing at some joke with one of the guys, not caring at all that he was sat down in the open bar, alone...eying her with anger.
Not that he cared of course. She could do whatever she wanted in her life, it was a fake marriage, so she didn't owe him anything. But why were his fellow officers leering towards her? They didn't know the truth. To them, she was his wife. His Miss Ajooba. His Mrs Neel Khanna. That still didn't seem to steer them away.
With a finally sip of his scotch, he got off the stool and made his way to his wife. Stepping in between Avni and DD, Neel put his arm around Avni's waist, avoiding her questioning gaze.
"So what's happening guys? Itne zor se kyun has rahe hon? What's so funny? Neel enquired.
As the chatter began again, Neel bent down and whispered in Avni's ear, "Bas...inke liya, biwi. He watched her nod her understanding, but more than that he watched the shiver that went down her spine as he breathed in her neck.Content, he returned to the chatter amongst the group, always tightening his hold when he found someone engaging in a conversation with Avni.
