Hey guys, as I was writing the next chapter, I realised that it will be better for my story if Kuhu and Rehan are already married. So I have made changes to the character introduction thread accordingly. So now on Kuhu nand Rehan are husband and wife.

CHAPTER 4

For appearance's sake, Amma, Appa and Sumi ma had to let Bella and Mahir travel together. BeHir knew that once they reached home, hell will break loose. But they were not scared. They had gotten out of a lot of troubles together, and knew together they would be able to overcome anything. The only worry some part was, if their parents were really convinced by their fake kiss then they would have a hard time convincing them otherwise.

Once home, BeHir were made to stand in the living room. Sumi ma, Amma and Appa sat on the sofa together. They were looking at BeHir. But BeHir were not able to meet their eyes. They just stood there holding hands, silently assuring each other that no matter what they were there for each other.

Sumi ma: What was that?

B: Ummm...

Amma: Bella, before you think of any excuse, let me tell you we saw through your fake kiss.

BeHir felt much relived. Now that their parents were not under any illusion, they could deal with anything. Their sole concern was their pretence giving their parents false hope.

Appa: Why did you do it?

Bella: Appa you know why. I do not want to get married. I have said this multiple times. I want to focus on my career. But still you forced me to meet Mayur. I did not want to do any of this. Initially I had decided to be rude to him. But he turned out to be very nice guy. I couldn't hurt him. So we did this.

Sumi ma: And what about you Mahir? Why did you do this?

B: Sumi ma, he did it only to help me. He had promised me that he will help me at any cost. And so he did.

Sumi ma: You always answer for him Bella. You always cover up for his mistakes. Let me tell you, you guys will not be around for each other for ever. He will have to own up for his mistakes at some point.

B: Ma, I will always be there for Mahir. And I know he will always be there for me.

Sumi ma was exasperated. She wanted to know why her son was so reluctant to marry anyone. Earlier on she thought maybe Mahir loved Bella and so he was reluctant to marry anyone. She had harboured a hope of having Bella as her daughter-in-law as she knew that BeHir were made for each other. But as years passed and neither of them showed any signs of wanting to be in a relationship with each other, she had begun to lose hope. She was not convinced with Bella's reasons either.

She had known Bella since she was four years old. She had raised her as her own. For Sumitra, she had two daughters, Bella and Kuhu. Just as she had two sons, Mahir and Rehan. She wanted Bella to marry Mahir as she did not want her daughter to go away from her. Sumitra did not think she could accept anyone else as Mahir's wife. She had constantly worried about her daughters going away from her. When Kuhu and announced that she loved Rehan, Sumitra's joy knew no bounds. Her only remaining wish was that BeHir should fall in love with each other. Then all of her kids would stay together under one roof.

After having lost her parent's love at the age of twenty two for loving and marrying Andy, she had made her husband the centre of her universe. For years her world revolved around Andy. But then even he had deceived her. After Andy left her to fend for herself, she was left with no other option but to return to her parent's place. Although they gave her a place to live she couldn't win back their love. That relationship was broken beyond repair.

Sumitra was a highly capable woman and her father knew that. So when he retired, he handed over the reins of his business to Sumitra. But she knew that there was no fatherly love in that move. It was a necessary move. One that would benefit the business. After handing over the business, her parents had moved to London.

After having lost her parents and the love of her life, she always feared losing her loved ones. She made her kids the centre of her universe. Just as she thought her life was settling down, her childhood friend and her husband had come to live in their old house. Gayatri and Sumitra had spent their childhood together. After Gayatri's marriage and her parent's demise their old home was not is use anymore.

But when Vyankatesh's business partner Omkar died in a car accident, they decided to shift to Gayatri's parents house. Along with getting her old friend back, Sumitra also received two very precious gifts. Bella and Rehan had come as blessings in her life. She quickly became fond of them. Mahir, Bella, Rehan and Kuhu grew up together.

But now neither of her kids were ready to tell her the reason for their refusal to marry anyone. Before she could think of anything to say, Gayatri spoke up.

Amma: Bella this is not fair. Because of you Mahir had to lose out on a good rishta. And why don't you want to get married? Mayur's parents assured me that they will ensure that nothing will change for you after marriage. In fact they did not even expect you to stop working with your Appa. What else do you want? In that house you could have had a perfect life.

Bella could not answer. Whatever Amma had said was true. Mayur had offered her a dream life. But even then she had chosen to reject him. Amma was still speaking

Amma:... I feel as if we have failed as your parents. We made you independent and self reliant, but we failed to make you human. I don't how I will face Janvi. She will accuse me of failing as a mother. She entrusted me with both her kids. Her dying wish was to see her kids happy. I have failed in that.

B: Amma, please don't say that. I am happy. My happiness is seeing you smile. Please...

Bella had tears in her eyes. She was someone who rarely cried, but seeing her Amma blaming herself brought tears in her eyes. After her mother's death, it was her Amma who had cared for her, loved her and ensured that she never felt like an orphan. Whenever anyone would tease her for being on orphan, she would retort that she was the luckiest of them all as she had not one but three mothers who loved her.

Seeing that Bella was on the verge of tears, Mahir stepped up.

M: Amma please...

Sumi ma: Mahir don't you dare say anything. If you had not supported her, then none of this would have happened. Even I feel like I have failed as your ma. Both of you have disappointed us today. Especially you Mahir. Do you realise that your move can end up defaming Bella? You are a guy, the society will not question you even if you kiss ten girls, but Bella? If Tanya or Mayur's parents mention today's incident to anyone, then Bella's character will be questioned. You said that you guys realised that you love each other. Now they will be expecting you guys to announce your marriage date soon. If not marriage, at least the news of your engagement will be expected. And rightly so.

M: But ma, we can tell them that it was all a pretence to avoid that rishta...

Sumi ma: Are you mad? If we tell anyone that you guys were simply pretending then Bella will be labelled characterless. People will call her cheap for making out with a boy to avoid a rishta.

M: But that's not fair...

Appa: Yes Mahir that is not fair. But this is how our society works.

B: But that's bull...

Appa: Bella, we live in a society. We will have to live by their rules. And Sumitra, Bella is to be equally blamed. She should have realised how her actions will affect her life. It's not like Mahir forced her to do anything. If I am not wrong, it was her idea all along.

M: No Appa, it was my idea. She was dead against it but I insisted that she ...

Appa: Mahir, the fact that you are so quick in defending her proves that it was her idea.

M: But...

Sumi ma: No arguments Mahir. You both are guilty today. Bella, I know that it was I and Gayatri who taught you how move with your head held high in this world which is full men who think women are beneath them. We taught you that you are just as capable as Mahir. We taught you how to conduct yourself in man's world. We told you that men and women are equal, but we never taught you to forget that you are a girl. We always thought that we had taught you to conduct yourself with dignity. I never expected such undignified behaviour from you. No Bella I am disappointed in both of you.

Amma: Mahir, Bella, we would not have minded if you had been really kissing each other. When two people are in love, physical attraction is very obvious. I would have fought with the world if you had really been in love with Mahir and had been caught making out. But this pretence thing is not something I can defend. Tomorrow if anyone calls my daughter characterless, then I will not be able to stop them. I blame myself for this. Me and Sumitra have failed as your mothers.

B: Amma pease...

Amma: Bella, Mahir, please go from here. I have nothing to say to you.

They both walked away still holding hands. After checking that BeHir had indeed gone to Bella's room,

Amma: Even this plan flopped.

Sumi ma: Yes, when I saw them kissing, for a moment I thought they had realised that they love each other, but then when we went close, we saw that they were just pretending to kiss each other.

FLASHBACK

Appa: Sumitra, Gayatri are you sure this will work? I mean...

Sumi ma: Vyankatesh please don't start again. This is for their own benefit.

Amma: Yes we have discussed this before. The whole purpose of arranging this meeting is to try and nudge BeHir towards each other. Perhaps if they see someone else in each other's life, then they will realise that can't leave without each other?

Sumi ma: Yes. All through their childhood, they have been close to each other. They have never allowed anyone to come between them. They have always taken it for granted that they will always be together. If they realise that marriage is something that can drive them apart then maybe they will realise that getting married with each other is the only way to stay together?

Appa: And what if Bella ends up liking Mayur or Mahir ends up liking Tanya?

Amma: Vyankatesh, it is a win win situation in both cases, either they will end up realising that they love each other, or they will agree to get married to Mayur and Tanya.

Appa: And what if Bella says yes to Mayur and Mahir ends up realising his love for Bella? Don't you think you are creating a love triangle unnecessarily? What if your filmy method ends up producing filmy results?

Sumi ma: See, we can't predict anything. Let's hope that our plan doesn't end up hurting our kids. But I know one thing; if your intension is good then the method doesn't matter. This is a risk we have to take.

FLASHBACK ENDS

Appa: There were three probable outcomes according to us. Neither of us thought that they will get rid of Mayur and Tanya by pretending to realise their love for each other.

Amma: God, I don't how we are going to convince them. Even emotional blackmailing did not work.

Sumi ma: I purposely said that you both will not always be there for each other. I thought that would probably trigger something in either of them. But no, even that did not work. I never thought that they will do something so stupid. I hope our plan has not spoiled Bella's reputation.

Appa: Come on let's sleep on it. We will see what we can do tomorrow.

CHAPTER 5

While this conversation was going on, BeHir were having an emotionally charged conversation of their own.

Feeling very guilty, BeHir headed towards Bella's room. Bella was crying bitterly by the time they reached her room. Because of her, Amma had felt like a failure. She had been the reason why Sumi ma and Appa had felt disappointed. Amma's accusation that because of her, Mahir had lost a good rishta was echoing in her ears. Mahir was dealing with his own guilt. Sumi ma's accusation that he had ruined Bella's reputation was ringing in his ears.

As soon as they reached her room, Bella started sobbing. Mahir was the only one who had seen this side of Bella. After some time, Bella stopped crying. She was lying on the bed with her head in Mahir's lap. Mahir was lightly stroking her hair. Mahir wanted to say something but he knew it was best if Bella cried to her heart's content before saying anything. Once she was feeling calm enough she sat up.

B: Mahir I am sorry. I didn't mean to come between you and your happiness.

M: Are you mad Bella? My happiness lies in your smile. My happiness lies in seeing my family happy. And besides, helping you was my decision. And I am really not interested in marrying anyone.

B: But why Mahir? Why don't you want to marry anyone? Tanya was a really nice girl. Why did you not change your mind after meeting her?

M: I can ask you the same question. Mayur was a decent guy. Really supportive. He was literally offering you your dream life. Even then you rejected him. Why?

B: I guess we both have valid questions for each other. I will answer your question first. Yes, Mayur had offered me my dream life. But I rejected him because I don't want to leave this house. I never want to leave any one of you and go. I know it sounds stupid. Every girl has to leave her home and live in her husband's home, but I don't want to do that. I don't think I have it in me to accept any more relationships in my life. Marriage comes with multiple relationships. And with relationships, come expectations. I have seen Amma struggle all her life trying to fulfil various people's expectations. Paati (dadi) still doesn't respect Amma as she can't become a mother. Atthai (bua) still taunts Amma for being barren. Just because Amma was not medically fit to fulfil one of their expectations, they disrespect Amma. All the other things that Amma has done for the family are ignored. The fact that Amma dedicated her whole life to care for two orphans who are not related to her in any way makes her a great person. But not one of Appa's so called family members are able to appreciate that. Nanu and Nani have still not forgiven Sumi ma for failing to fulfil their expectations. Her only fault was that she followed heart and married dad. She has far exceeded expectation when it comes to business, but Nanu is still focused on her one mistake that she committed. Everyone expected her to hide her face and live a life of disgrace when dad ditched her. But instead of hiding her face, she stood tall and faced the world. But instead of appreciating her bravery, the whole Sehgal family has labelled her a disgrace to the family. Marriage and expectations go hand in hand Mahir. Now take today's example, see the amount of pain we are going through just because we failed to behave in a manner that was expected from us. I have more than enough relationships in my life that expect things from me. And I want to fulfil their expectations. I never want to see Amma, Appa and Sumi ma disappointed because of me. I feel if I get married my whole life will be spent in trying to fulfil everyone's expectations. Now it's your turn.

M: Bella I am afraid of getting married.

B: What?

M: Yes, I fear that if I get married, then I might end up cheating my wife just like dad cheated ma. What if even I end up ditching my wife and kids half way through life? I am afraid that one day my son will stand in front of me and look at me accusingly like I look at dad today. After all I am my dad's son right?

B: Mahir, you will never do what dad did.

M: How can you be so sure?

B: I am sure because I know you. You are Sumi ma's son. You were raised by Amma, Appa and Sumi ma. They have taught you how to deal with life. I know for the fact that if you marry someone, you will be the best husband any girl could ask for. She will be the luckiest girl alive. And if at all I feel that you are straying away from the path, I will always be there to guide you back.

M: Bella, you said just now that you want to fulfil all of Amma, Appa and Sumi ma's expectations. That means one day you will marry someone. Then how will you guide me? You will not be around me all the time. I am afraid that I might fall in love with someone after getting married. Just like dad did.

B: Stop comparing yourself to dad Mahir. Dad never loved anyone. If ever there was one thing that dad loved more than himself, then it was money. Dad never loved Sumi ma nor does he love Chudail. He only loves money. If Nanu had given all of his property to Sumi ma after her marriage then dad would have stayed with ma. But Nanu refused to do so and that is why when Chudail's father offered to make dad the CEO of his firm in exchange of his hand in marriage for Polo aunty, he immediately agreed. You are not your father Mahir. Get that very clearly.

Mahir had rarely seen Bella so angry.

M: So you want me to marry someone?

B: Yes, if that's what makes you happy.

M: I will think about it Bella. Now I think you should sleep. It's getting late. Tomorrow we will have to go to Lonavala for the conference. Let's sleep.

B: Mahir please don't go. Stay here for the night. You can sleep on Kuhu's bed.

M: Bella, please. I am as it is feeling guilty because our actions might have spoiled your reputation. I don't want to do any more damage.

B: Mahir, whatever happened today, it was my choice. You need not feel guilty for my choices. If at all I am to marry anyone, he will have to believe me when I say that there was nothing between the two of us. Ever! Please Mahir, stay with me. No one will know.

M: Bella, you sure know how to blackmail me. Okay fine I will stay. I will just go and get a change of clothes.

Mahir goes and changes into his night clothes and sneaks back into Bella's room. By that time even Bella has changed into her night clothes and is waiting for him. Mahir lies down on Kuhu's bed.

M: Good night Bella.

B: Good night Mahir.

Been waiting for updates. I'm excited to see how they get hitched lol. How many chapters left?

Don't know. Right now I am writing 10th chapter. I know where my story is headed, but not sure how many chapters I will write.

Waiting waiting waiting , waiting for more

Not for few more chapters at least. They will stumble into love. Falling is a very decisive thing. Stumbling is accidental.

CHAPTER 6

Next morning Mahir woke up early so that he could sneak back to his room without anyone discovering that he had spent the night in Bella's room. He also woke up Bella.

M: Bella wake up. We have to leave in an hour's time. I am going back to my room to take a shower. You do the same. Bella WAKE UP!!!!

B: Hmmm

M: Bella please wake up.

B: Huh? Hmm I am awake.

M: Are you sure? Bella sit up or else I will pour water on your head.

B: Don't!! I am awake. You go and get ready now. I will meet you downstairs.

Bella went and had a shower. By the time Mahir and Bella came dowbstairs, the whole household was awake. Breakfast was waiting for them at the dining table. They sat down to have breakfast and waited for Amma and others to show up. But no one showed up. So Bella called Dolly their house help

B: Dolly di, where are Amma, Appa and Sumi ma? Aren't going to come down for breakfast?

Dolly: No. I mean that they are having their breakfast in the kitchen. Sumitra ma'am has told me to wish you all the best for the conference.

M: I think they are really upset with us. Let us go and say goodbye to them before we leave.

B: Okay. Dolly di, I am not hungry. Take away this breakfast. I will eat something at the conference.

M: Yes even I am not very hungry, and anyways we are getting late. Let's go.

They both had towards the kitchen.

B: Bye Amma, Appa. Bye Sumi ma.

M: We will come home late. Appa we need your signatures on these papers.

B: Ma, you will not even say goodbye? Please? Amma, Appa?

Sumi ma: Bye Bella. Bye Mahir. All the best.

Amma, Appa: Yes best of luck. Let me know what happens at the conference.

Sumi ma: There is a possibility that you will meet Mayur today. Try and behave in a dignified manner. Don't embarrass us any further.

BeHir: Yes ma.

They both started off from home. Since Bella loved driving, she insisted that they will not take Vinay with them. So it was just BeHir in the car. While they were on the expressway they realised that the weather in turning cloudy and stormy. Just as they reached the hotel where their conference was being held, it started raining heavily.

As soon as they entered the hotel lobby, they saw Mayur standing there. Bella went and said hello to him.

B: Hi Mayur!

Mayur: Hi Bella! Hi Mahir! I hope things were not too rough for you last night?

M: They were pretty much rough. But then again that was to be expected.

B: Mahir, let's go get things set up.

M: You go ahead; I want to have a word with Mayur.

B: Umm. Okay, but come soon.

M: Yes...

As soon as Bella left from there,

M: Mayur listen, I want to ask for a favour from you. I know you and Tanya have already done a lot for us but still...

Mayur: Come on Mahir, you can ask for anything. No need for such formalities.

M: Okay, I would be really grateful if you could tell your parents not to spread the news of my and Bella's supposed love, we would be really grateful to you. We acted in haste yesterday, but we didn't realise that it could negatively affect Bella's reputation. And if possible, pass on this message to Tanya as well.

Mayur: Tanya had already realised this, and so she convinced me to reveal to our parents that we liked each other. She thought if our parents realised that even their kids had erred then they will keep mum about what you and Bella did. And anyways she did not like hiding something so big from our parents. So after you left,

FLASHBACK

Tanya: Mayur, thank god our parents kept their cool.

Mayur: Yes. But now we will have to decide how we will tell our parents about us.

Tanya: I don't like keeping things from them. Let's tell them today itself. And anyways it is only fair that they know that even we have technically erred by choosing each other instead of Mahir and Bella. Because if the word gets out that Mahir and Bella are in a relationship with each other, then everyone will expect them to get married, and since they were just pretending, it will end up hurting their reputation. They both were honest with us. And it was Bella who gave me the confidence to approach you. If it had not been for her I would never have had the guts to approach you. So we owe them this much.

Mayur: You are right. Let's do this.

Holding each other's hands, we approached our parents. They were shocked, to say the least.

Mayur's Mom: What is going on Mayur?

Mayur: Mom, I like Tanya and she likes me. Even if Bella and Mahir had not realised that they love each other, we both would have never chosen them. Because the moment Tanya entered the room, I lost my heart to her. And then she started speaking, and I decided that she is the one for me.

Tanya: Yes ma, papa. I really like Mayur, he is everything that I wanted my life partner to be. You told me that today there is a chance that I will meet my life partner, and I did not believe you. I was sceptical about this whole arranged marriage thing. I agreed to meet Mahir only to honour your wish. Although Mahir is a great guy, we did not really connect. But Mayur and I, we instantly connected.

Tanya's dad: Do you even know what you are saying? We sent you to meet one guy and you ended up selecting that guy's best friend's date? What will Sumitraji think if she comes to know about this?

Mayur's dad: Mayur, I hope you know what you guys are saying.

Mayur: Dad do you have a problem with Tanya?

Mayur's Dad: Of course not beta. If my son has selected her then I am more than happy to accept her as my daughter-in-law but just think of how this will look to the world.

Tanya's Mom: Exactly, the world will point fingers in your direction.

Mayur's mom: And I will not blame them.

Mayur: So mom let's not tell anyone anything. No one needs to know what happened today.

Tanya: Yes aunty. No one knew that me and Mayur were going to meet BeHir. So let it remain that way. That is if you are ready to accept me as your daughter-in-law.

Mayur's mom: Yes dear. Of course I will accept you.

Mayur: Uncle, Aunty I hope you think I am good enough for your daughter. I promise to always keep her happy.

Tanya's Mom: Yes beta. If our daughter thinks you are nice, then we will readily accept her choice.

Tanya' Dad: But it will be better if we don't let anyone know about this. Let's arrange a formal meeting for both of you in a few weeks time. Till then don't meet each other.

Mayur, Tanya: Okay.

FLASHBACK ENDS

Mayur: So under the guise of protecting our reputation, even your and Bella's reputation was saved. The only drawback was that we can't meet each other for some time.

M: Thanks man. We owe you one. If there is anything that we can do for you, don't hesitate to let us know.

Mayur: There is one thing you can do for us. From what Tanya let slip yesterday, she is a huge fan of Kuhu Sehgal's designs. I know there is huge waiting list for her designs; if you could get your sister to design Tanya's clothes for our wedding functions then I will be really grateful. We both plan to get hitched as soon as possible.

M: Of course Kuhu will do that for you. I will speak with her.

Mayur: Thanks, Tanya will be really happy.

M: Anytime.

After having secured Bella's reputation Mahir headed towards the conference room. Bella was waiting for him. She was about say something when Mahir signed that we will talk later. She nodded her head. The conference was about to begin, so they headed inside.

After the conference, they both had their lunch. They had not eaten anything since the previous night and were very hungry. While waiting for their lunch order, Mahir called up Appa and told about the conference. After the lunch they decided to start off towards home. By that time it was raining very very heavily. Even the road was not clearly visible.

Bella was a bit reluctant to drive in this weather, but Mahir was pretty adamant. He did not want the family to worry about their whereabouts. Bella kept on insisting that it was not safe to drive in such heavy rains, but Mahir was in his rare jiddi mood.

In a way he was right. Everyone was as it was very upset with them. It was prudent to convince them as soon as possible. And that could be accomplished only if they were present at home. But Bella was also right. The Expressway would not be safe. Eventually, Bella gave in and they started back. It was about five in the evening when they began their return journey. Lonavala being only a few hours' drive from Mumbai, Mahir estimated that they would reach their home latest by nine at night, traffic included.

Since it was raining pretty heavily, waterfalls near Lonavala had attracted a lot of visitors. So it took them around an hour to reach the express way itself. By that time Bella was tired of driving. So Mahir took over from there. Bella had so far ignored her phone, but now that she was not driving, she checked her phone. She saw that Mayur had messaged her.

Mayur's text: Hey, I hope you are fine. There has been a landslide on the Expressway and the road is jammed. I have already crossed ahead. But I know that you had still not started by the time I left, so you will likely get stuck. Head back. There is no way you can travel tonight unless you take the old road.

Bella's text: Thanks for the heads up. Text me as soon as you reach home. J

Bella showed the text to Mahir.

B: Now please don't insist that we travel by the old road. It is full of treacherous turns and a lot more prone to landslides. Let's head back and spend the night at our farmhouse.

M: Okay.

Having reluctantly agreed, he took a u-turn and started towards their farmhouse. Bella quickly called Amma and told her about their change of plans. On the way they saw a huge depression on the road and it was filled with water. Now they had no idea whether their car will safely make it through or no. But even then Mahir decided to take a chance. They safely cleared the depression. The farmhouse was still about twelve kilometres away when their car began to sputter, and then eventually came to a standstill. No matter what Mahir did, their car would not budge. When the car began to give trouble, Mahir had already directed it to the side of the road, so that way they were safe.

M: I think water has entered the engine. Damn. Now this car will not start. Bella we will have to walk from here.

Bella collected her purse from the back seat, exited the car and held out her hand for Mahir. Mahir securely locked the car, took her hand in his and they both stared walking towards their farmhouse. It was still raining pretty heavily. They were soaked through completely within minutes. They walked in silence for some time. It was getting quite dark. As it was darkness had come pretty early that day because of the storm clouds. Very soon it became pitch dark. Mahir had switched on GPS to guide them to their farmhouse, so asked Bella to switch on her mobile's flashlight. Both of their phones had waterproof covers so the rain water was unable to damage their phones.

Since Bella and Mahir rarely had to walk, twelve kilometres was a pretty long distance for them. They were feeling exhausted after first three kilometres itself. The road was fairly straight one, but a lonely one. Neither of them was scared of darkness per say, but the road was looking creepy at that particular moment with clouds thundering and lightening flashing every few minutes. With every flash of lightening the nearby surroundings would light up for a fraction of a second before everything plunged back into complete darkness. It was frightening how one moment the whole county side was visible for miles and miles, lit up eerily, and the next moment everything went completely black.

After walking for nearly two hours, they reached their farmhouse. They were thoroughly exhausted and soaked to bone. Their watchman Raju was surprised to see them there.

Raju: Mahir sir, Bella ma'am app yaha? Aur aap poori taraha se beeg cuke ho. Aayi ye.

He unlocked the door for them. They both collapsed on the floor itself. He brought for water for both of them. They thankfully drank it.

Raju: Sir kya hua?

M: Hamari car kharab ho gayi thi. Agar koi mechanic pehechan mein ho toh ye lo chabi. Car main road pe yaha se kuch bara kilometre dur hai. Ho sake toh theek kar lena.

Raju: Sir, mechanic toh hai, lekin iss barish mein koi nahi aayega. Hume kal tak intazaar karana hoga.

B: Okay. Ghar mein kuch khane ke liye hai? Pet mein chuhe daud rahe hai.

Raju: Nahi ma'am. Aap ne bataya naahi tha na toh kuch bhi stock nahi kiya hai. Lekin mein yaha najdik hi rahaata hu. Mere ghar se kuch la sakata hu mein.

M: Chalega.

After some time Raju returned with food.

Raju: Sir hum gareebon ka khana bahut sadha hota hai. Lekin muze laga ki aap shyad bhuke honge toh mein jo tha wahi utha laya. Agar aap ko kuch aur chahiye toh bol dijiye.

B: Aare aaj na sookhi roti bhi five star ke kahne ki tarah lagegi itani bhook lagi hai.

M: Aur kitna khana bheja hai tumhari wife ne? Baap re! Yeh kya hai? Chicken sukka? Wow? Aur yeh kya?

Raju: Sir, isse bhakari kehte hai. Sir humare yaha gehu ki roti naahi baanati, bajre ki roti baanaati hai. Aur sir, ye purnpoli bheji hai meri aai ne. Ye uski khassiyat hai.

B: Raju, jaha tak muze pata hai poonpoli toh sirf tyohar ke din banati hai, khas kaarke Holi pe. Toh aaj kis khushi mein?

Raju: Woh aaj meri beeti ka jnam din hai toh isliye banayi thi.

B: Beti ka janam din? Kitane saal ke ho gayi?

Raju: 5 saal ki.

B: Aare toh phir tumhare yahaa pe mehman aaye honge. Kahi humare wajahase khana kam na padjaye.

Raju: Nahi ma'am aap uski chinta mat karo. Aai ka niyam hai agar ghar pe 10 mehaman aane waale hai toh khan 16-17 logon ke hisaab se bana hai. Kisi ko kam nahi panda chahiye. Meri wife humesha gussa karti thi ke itana khana kyu, lekin aaj use bhi ehsaas ho gaya hai ki aai sahi thi.

M: Chalo toh phir theek hai. Lekin tum aaj yaha kyu ho? Mera matlab hai tum aaj aapnane ghar par kyu nahi ho?

Raju: Sir woh night duty wala Shanakar hai na, woh har saal double shift karata hai aaj ke din, lekin parso uske behen ki sagai hai toh woh aaj aapaani khud ki duty nahi kar payega. Meinn karunga uski bhi shift.

B: Aare yeh toh sahi nnahi hai. Tumhe toh ghar pe hona chahiye. Ek kaam karo tum na ghar chale jao. Direct kal subhe aana. Theek hai?

M: Bella do you have the...

B: Yes I have it. Take this.

Mahir writes a cheque of fifteen thousand rupees and hands it over to Raju.

M: Ye tumhare liye nahi hai. Tumhari beti ke liye hai. Uske naam pe invest kar dena. Usike future keliya kaam aayege. Aur suno, har mahine mein iss mein thode thode paise aur add karate rehana. Ek kaam karo, parso meri office mein call karna, meri secretary tumhe Mutual Funds ke baaree mein samja degi. Ye raha number. Ab jao.

After Raju went, Bella and Mahir ate to their heart's content. Their clothes were still sticky and wet. It was about ten'o clock by the time they finished eating. Bella had begun to feel uncomfortable in her wet clothes. Not just uncomfortable, but she was also feeling feverish. She was shivering a lot. Mahir noticed that.

M: Bella, you are shivering. Let's so to the bedroom. I will grab a blanket for you.

Bella tried to stand up and stumbled. Mahir quickly caught her. That is when he realised that she was suffering from high fever. Bella tried to walk, but couldn't, partly because she had walked for twelve kms and her legs had become stiff and partly because she was having high fever. She just swayed on the spot. Left with no other option, Mahir picked her up and carried her to the nearest bedroom. He laid her on the bed and immediately covered her with a thick blanket. Even after ten minutes, her shivering had not stopped.

B: MMMahir, I aam still fffeeeling ccold.

M: I know Bella. Wait I will call doctor uncle and ask him what to do. Hang on.

Mahir went to the living room and grabbed his and Bella's phone. To his dismay both the phones were dead. He went back to the bedroom and informed Bella.

B: Ttthere is a spspspspare charger in ttthis drawer.

Just as Mahir was about to open the drawer, there was huge roll of thunder and a flash of lightening and the lights went out.

M: Oh no. Power supply has been cut. Now what do I do?

He remembered reading somewhere that in order to keep a person warm, it was important to discard all the wet clothes first.

M: Bella, we will have to get you out of your wet clothes. That way you will get warm faster.

B: Okay.

Bella once again tried to get up and stumbled. Mahir steadied her.

M: Okay Bella, you take off your clothes, I will shut my eyes. I can't leave this room since you can barely stand. Don't worry I won't let you fall.

Bella, slowly stripped down to her inner wear and got under the blanket. Once she was safely inside, Mahir went out of the room and got a bowl full of salt water. He soaked his handkerchief in that water and laid it on Bella's forehead. That is what Amma and Sumi ma would to get his temperature down when he was a kid. He hoped that trick would work even that day. After a couple of minutes he repeated the process. He continued to do so for the next half an hour or so. Then he went to adjacent room where a first aid box was kept. He brought out thermometer and checked Bella's temperature. It was still pretty high. And Bella was still shivering continuously.

Mahir quickly checked the first-aid box and took out tablets to bring down fever. He made Bella sit up and have that tablet.

B: Mahir get out your wet clothes, ppplease. Otherwise yyyou wwwill catch cold.

She had been repeating this every few minutes for the last thirty miniues.

M: Shut up Bella. You are not well and you are worrying about me?

Just then Mahir gave a huge sneeze.

B: SSSeee I told you.

M: Okay fine. I will take off my wet clothes. Happy now?

B: YYes. I will close my eyes.

Mahir continued to sneeze for the next few minutes continuously. Once he was out of his wet clothes, Bella insisted that he cover himself with another blanket.

B: Mahir your hands are so warm.

Bella's hands were as cold as ice. Mahir was more worried than he was letting on. Bella's fevers were legendary. Her fever would never stop at ordinary fever temperature; her temperature would rise to levels wherein she would become delirious because of fever. And she very swiftly was heading to that stage. Mahir knew he had to bring down her temperature fast or else he would have a medical emergency on hand. Bella had already begun to mutter nonsense in a semi conscious state. Now genuinely scared, he did the onlty thing that seemed sensible to him.

Under the blanket, he had warmed up pretty quickly. So he slipped under her blanket and used his blanket to cover the both of them. He turned Bella around so that she was facing him and pulled her close. His only concern was to warm up Bella at any cost. He knew the medicine will also begin to show effect very soon.

After some time Bella stopped shivering completely. Bella had fallen asleep by then. He wanted to check her temperature one last time, but he was exhausted. Slowly even he drifted off to sleep with his arms still around his Bella.
