Part 11: Heartbroken Gunjan

"Samrat!", Gunjan shook Samrat holding his arm, and there Samrat was back to the reality. "Phew! It was a dream!", he thought and smiled slightly.
"Why are you smiling?", Gunjan asked totally confused. "Oh nothing!", Samrat nervously said. "Oh okay, anyways, here's your glass.", Gunjan said and gave him the glass.
Samrat was quietly drinking the juice and observing his face, Gunjan realized that he was surely hiding something, but what that was, she couldn't guess.
Just then, the doorbell rang and Samrat, all of a sudden, jumped up keeping the glass on the side-table and grinned. "Let me check.", Gunjan said plainly but was interrupted by Samrat. "You stay here, I'll check.", he said authoritatively and before Gunjan could protest, Samrat rushed to the main door. "What has happened to him today?", Gunjan wondered.

"Who has come so late night and most importantly, why isn't Samrat coming back? I hope everything is fine.", Gunjan said to herself. Lines of worries appeared on her forehead. Taking a deep breath, she stood up and walked to the hall.
Everything was pure dark and Samrat was nowhere. Gunjan felt her heart would come out any moment. She started sweating due to fear, perhaps, fear of losing someone dearest. "Samrat!", she called out in a trembling voice.
"Happy Birthday to you,
Happy Birthday to you,
Happy Birthday dear Gunjan,
Happy Birthday to you."
She heard someone singing this for her and knowing who he was, a smile of relief curved on her lips. The lights turned on and there, Samrat was standing with an ocean-sized smile on his face and his arms crossed near his chest. In front of him was a table with a small-sized and cute chocolate cake on it.
Without giving a second thought, Gunjan ran to Samrat and hugged him as tightly as she can. "Samrat, I really got so scared. Where did you go so suddenly? You know I was hell frightened.", she said in one go and her voice was conveying all her fears and concern.
For once, Samrat was kind of surprised at this sudden act of Gunjan, but at the end, he hugged her back and caressing her head gently, he said softly, "Gunjan, I was here. I was just preparing your surprise. Don't panic. I'm here."
Relaxed, Gunjan broke the hug and said embarrassedly, "I don't know why I got so scared. Sorry!" Samrat touched her cheek tenderly and said, "Its okay! Anyways, lets cut the cake. My mouth is watering." Chuckling, Gunjan nodded.
Gunjan stood behind the cake holding the knife in her hand. Samrat stood beside her. As Gunjan cut the cake, Samrat clapped and sang the birthday song. Gunjan took a slice of the cake and fed Samrat, while Samrat did the same to her.
"So where's my birthday present?", Gunjan asked childishly. Samrat, giving his killing smile, took out the 2 yellow roses from the inside pocket of his jacket. "Happy Birthday, best friend.", he said affectionately and gave him the roses. Gunjan took those jollily and hugging Samrat, she thanked him for such beautiful roses.
Once they broke off from their hug, Samrat nervously said, "Gunjan, I've something else for you." "OMG! Really? Then what are you waiting for? Give me naa. I love gifts.", Gunjan said like a three years old kid.
Samrat closed his eyes to gather some courage and knelt on the floor. Gunjan was really confused. Samrat took out the 2 red roses from his pocket and said looking directly in her eyes, "I love you Gunjan." Gunjan's smile vanished in a second.
After a while of pure silence, Gunjan made Samrat stand by holding his arms. "Samrat, look! You are my best friend, but, I mean, I really don't know. Long before, I had promised myself not to fall in love again because I don't have the strength to tolerate its pain anymore.", she said seriously. Somewhere Samrat had expected such kind of reply and he was glad that Gunjan spoke her heart out.
Samrat took her hands in his and looking lovingly in her eyes, he said, "Gunjan, we both had gone through the same pain. We both have suffered a lot, and the two people, for whom we have forbidden ourselves to fall in love, are so easily enjoying their lives. So why shouldn't we move on? Why should we stand on the same place where they had left us? I've understood one thing after I met you, that is, we understand each other very well. We trust each other. Not as lovers but as friends, we love each other a lot. So lets give a name to our relationship. Moreover, since some days, I've started feeling something for you which I didn't feel before for Sheena. Maybe that's because she wasn't meant for me. Honestly tell me one thing Gunjan, don't you feel anything when we are together? Don't you feel anything when we are close?"
Each of the words said by Samrat was absolutely true, Gunjan thought. Tears gushed from her eyes at a high speed. She closed her eyes to stop the overflow of her emotions through her eyes. Samrat leaned forward and kissed her eye-lashes giving her a strange pleasure. Pulling himself back, Samrat said in the softest manner, "If you want us to be just best friends, then its okay, I'll be always there by your side as your friend."
Gunjan opened her eyes and there they shared an emotional eye-lock. Selfless love and respect for her ' that's all she could find in those pair of deep eyes, and in no time, she embraced him. Samrat, smiling contently, encircled her in his arms. He didn't expect her to tell him those three magical words at that moment because he knew she needed time to realize about her feelings.
"I just want to be in your arms forever.", Gunjan said slowly and Samrat, with tears of joy in his eyes, smiled and kissed her forehead.

"Samrat, was this grand party necessary?", Gunjan asked in irritation. "Obviously yes!", Samrat said with a sure look. "After all, its my girlfriend's birthday.", he said proudly and for a moment, Gunjan froze hearing the word GIRLFRIEND.
Realizing what just escaped from his mouth, Samrat guiltily said, "I meant.. my best friend's birthday." Gunjan, pushing her thoughts aside, smiled broadly and stood beside Samrat opposite to the mirror. Sliding her hands around his arm, she said, "Correction, Mr. Shergill, I'm your girlfriend, not just best friend."
Samrat smiled hearing that. "By the way, my boyfriend Samrat is looking hot in black.", Gunjan said with a wink and Samrat, seeing this through the mirror, widened his eyes in astonishment.
"Stop being shocked and lets go. You took more time than me. You should have born as a girl.", said Gunjan mockingly and giggled. Samrat, glaring at her, said with attitude, "I'm waiting for you in the parking lot." and walked out. Gunjan laughed.
On the way to the venue, Samrat, making an angry look, was driving and Gunjan seriously loved it. "By the way, Samrat, did you forget something?", she asked and her facial expression was slowly turning into anger. "What am I forgetting, Gunjan?", asked Samrat, trying to act innocent.
"You forgot to tell me that I'm looking beautiful.", Gunjan said with a proud smile. "Really? I didn't know that.", Samrat said and burst into laughter. Now it was Gunjan's turn to fume into anger. "You are.. Ugh!", she said and turned her face outside.
"Gunjan!", Samrat called out sweetly. "I don't want to talk-", Gunjan said but cutting her statement off, he said lovingly, "You are looking an angel in white gown." Gunjan smiled and blushed and seeing that, Samrat felt content.

The grand party for Gunjan's birthday was planned on the beach. Everything was according to Gunjan's taste, starting from the decorations to the menu. Loud music and everyone's squeals ' a perfect party atmosphere. Introducing Gunjan with some of his old friends, Samrat thought that it was time to cut the cake, but a special guest didn't arrive yet. "Where is he?", he wondered.

When Gunjan was talking with some of the guests, someone tapped on her shoulder. She turned back and there she got the biggest surprise of her life. "Karan bhaia!", she said in shock.
"Hey my little sis! Happy birthday sweetie.", Karan wished Gunjan and side-hugged her. "When did you come here? You didn't even inform me?! And how are you? I mean.. you.. here?! OMG! I really can't believe.", Gunjan said on a spree. Karan grinned seeing her over-excitement.
"Gunjan, relax! Calm down or else again you'll get asthma attack.", said Karan concernedly and Gunjan took a deep breath.
"Okay so answering your questions, Samrat called me here and I told him not to tell you anything because I wanted to give you a surprise. I'm fine and yes, I'm here finally. Feeling so good seeing you after so long.", Karan said with brotherly love.
Gunjan, with moist eyes, hugged Karan and said weakly, "I missed you so much! Thank you for giving such a huge surprise." Breaking off the hug, Karan said, "You should thank Samrat, not me!" "Where is he?", Gunjan asked sweetly. "Umm.. I saw him sitting at the bar.", Karan said plainly and Gunjan, not wasting a single time, rushed to meet him, and after she left, Karan evilly smiled.

Gunjan's eyes were searching desperately for Samrat in the crowd. She wanted to hug him tightly and thank him for giving her the best surprise of her life. She was missing her brother a lot and now her happiness had crossed all the limits.
Smiling, she reached the bar but in a second, her smile vanished as if she had seen something unexpected and shocking. "Sheena!", that was all could escape from her lips. Tears streamed down her cheeks as she saw Sheena hugging Samrat.
