Synopsis – Gunjan finds out about SSC being Samrat in the picnic and is livid
Am going to assume from the precap that Samrat unmasks himself deliberately in front of Gunjan and Mayank and no one else is there. Gunjan is livid and walks out after accusing him of not changing and always playing pranks etc. Samrat is heartbroken. Mayank doesn't say anything there. Picnic over, everyone leaves for college, SG and M all in grim moods.
Next morning in college, Gunjan comes to Samrat's office and gives her resignation. Samrat takes it quietly.
Samrat: Chash … Gunjan, ek baar meri baat sun lo. Maine yeh sirf tumhare liye …
Gunjan (interrupts him): Samrat, tum kabhi nahin badloge. Main is ke baare mein koi baat nahin karna chahti. Main yahan par kaam karna nahin chahti jahan par tum jaise irresponsible log trustee hon.
Samrat: Toh kya tum yeh job bhi aadha adhura chhod kar chali jaogi? Sirf issliye ki main yahan par hun? Kya aisa karne se tum bahut responsibly behave kar rahi ho?
Gunjan stares at him.
Gun: Kya matlab hai tumhara?
Samrat: Yehi ki … jab tumne voh film aadhi chhod di, voh iss liye kyunki vahan Neil tumse pyaar karta tha, aur tum uski vajah se ham dono ke beech problems hote nahin dekh sakti thi. Aaj yahan, ek aur insaan hai jisse tumhe problem hai, aur uski vajah se tum job chhodna chahti ho, apne sign kiya hua contract todna chahti ho. Kal kahin aur jaogi, vahan agar kisi ko tumse pyaar ho gaya, ya koi aur problem hogi, kya tum voh job bhi chhod dogi? Kya yeh responsible aur professional behavior hai?
Gunjan is quiet.
Samrat: Maine kabhi tumhe kisi baat ke liye force nahin kiya, Chashmishm aur na ab karunga. Agar tum yahan sirf meri vajah se kaam nahin karna chahti, toh main tumhe itna vishwas dila sakta hun ki main tumhare saamne nahin aaunga. Phir bhi, agar tum jaana chahti ho, to main tumhe nahin rokunga. Yeh lo apna contract, isko phaad kar phenk do. Aur phir jaise tumhari marzi, tum vaise kar sakti ho.
He holds out her contract to her. Gunjan has a flashback of SSC asking her that she didn't even read the contract before signing it. He never forced or hurried her into signing it, she did it all on her own.
Gun: Main iske baare mein thoda sochna chahti hun.
Samrat (Quietly): theek hai.
Gunjan goes out and goes to the staff room in deep thought. Somewhere deep inside her, she knows she doesn't want to leave. Doesn't want to leave Excel, the college where happy memories are coming back, where she is feeling at home, at peace … and where the bitterness of the last three years is slowly beginning to fade. And she knows that the anger at Samrat was her form of denial, her grief at Nupur's death, it was unjustified … if nothing else, SSC has done that – made her look at life in a new light, made the sadness fade, and the happy memories take over.
But why had he hidden from her, lied to her? Her anger starts again … no, she will leave. She doesn't want to stay where she will see him every day … she can't trust him after this latest SSC caper …
Mayank comes into the staff room and sees her deep in thought. He is a bit surprised to see her – he had thought she would fight with Samrat in the morning and be out before he even got to college. Yet here she still is.
Mayank: Gunjan? Kya hua?
Gunjan looks at him.
Gunjan: Maine aaj subah Samrat ko apna resignation letter de diya.
Mayank nods. He's not surprised.
Gunjan (she's surprised at his quiet): Mayank? Tum jaante the? Ki Chaddha sir Samrat hain?
Mayank nods again. Gunjan gets angry with him now.
Gun: Aur tumne mujhe nahin bataya? Kya yeh bhi jaante the ki Samrat yahan ka trustee hai?
Mayank nods a third time. Gunjan is furious by now.
Gun: Aur yeh bhi mujhe batana tumne zaroori nahin samjha? Mayank …
Mayank (interrupts her): Gunjan, main tumhe batane vaala tha … lekin tumne mujhse kaha ki tum sab kuch jaanti ho, aur use tumhe koi fark nahin padhta. Maine socha ki jab tum Samrat ko freshers' party mein mili thi, tumhe uske trustee hone ka bhi pata lag gaya tha. Aur tum Samrat ke baare mein baat nahin karna chahti thi, iss liye maine aur kuch nahin bola.
Gunjan remembers again her conversation with Mayank after the party when she had told him that she met Samrat during the party and it made no difference to her. And she realizes he was telling the truth. He hadn't known she didn't know about Samrat being trustee when she joined the college. But after that? she looks at him again.
Gun: aur uske baad? Jab tum Chaddha sir se mile? Tum jaante the ki voh Samrat hai? Phir bhi tumne mujhe nahin bataya?
Mayank: Main nahin jaanta tha. Mujhe shuru se voh thoda ajeeb laga … lekin voh tumhe bahut pasand aaya … iss liye main chup raha … kyunki mujhe tumhari judgement par vishwas tha. Aur uski vajah se tum bahut positive ho rahi thi … lekin jab mujhe shaq hua, to main use milne gaya, aur usne mujhse do din ka waqt maanga. Jo maine use diya.
Gunjan gets upset again.
Gun: tumhe mujhe bata dena chahiye tha, Mayank. Tumne bhi mujhse jhooth bola?
Mayank (gently): Gunjan … yaad hai, jab main Suhani ke baare mein Adhiraj ko sab batana chahta tha, tab tumne mujhse do din maange the. Kyunki tum Samrat ko sach batane ke liye tayyar nahin thi. Tum jaanti thi ki voh Suhani ka sach sunne ke liye tayyar nahin tha. Aur tumhe Samrat ki fikr thi, ki voh yeh news kaise handle karega. Gunjan, mujhe bhi iss mein tumhari fikr thi. Mujhe nahin lagta tha ki tum yeh sach sunne ke liye tayyar ho … iss liye maine Samrat ko do din diye. Aur usne tumhe yeh sach un do dinon ke andar khud hi bata diya. Usne yeh sab sirf tumhari khushi ke liye kiya, Gunjan … tumhe dobara khush dekhne ke liye, tumhe apne dukh se nikaalne ke liye. Aur voh jaanta tha, ki agar tumhe pata chala ki voh yahan trustee hai, to tum Excel kabhi nahi aaogi. Lekin tumhara yahan aana zaroori tha, Gunjan … tumhare liye.
He looks at her.
Mayank (speaks very quietly): Aage tumhari marzi. Tum jo theek samjho, vaise hi karo.
He walks out.
Gunjan sits silently at the table, and flashbacks come again. She and Suhani pleading with Mayank not to tell Samrat about Suhani, Samrat's anger when he found out … she hadn't had the courage to break it to him, he had found out on his own, and he had been furious … but he had forgiven her without a word of reproach. Because he had understood her motives … understood that she had lied … but out of her love for him, her concern for him … her worry for him …
And SSC had been born for similar reasons … his love for her, his concern, his worry … his love … his constant, never-changing love … but he had been braver than her … he had unmasked himself deliberately, not waited for her to find out on her own …
More flashbacks crowd her mind … this time of SSC … be positive, remember those who are gone with a smile, not tears, maaki ki roti, sarson ka saag, Nupur's favourite… and after three years, she had made it and enjoyed it, enjoyed her sister's memories without tears … tea at a roadside chai stall, mirchi and ice cream, the rain, bike rides, 'yeh zindagi' …
Suddenly she gets up, and makes her way decisively back to Samrat's cabin again. He's sitting at his table, gazing at a picture on his desk, which she can't see. He looks up when she comes in, and to her shock, his eyes are red.
Some things never change. She still can't see him upset.
She sits down at the chair opposite him. Without looking directly at him, she says quietly: Main apna resignation vapas leti hun. Agar aap theek samjhein, main Excel mein rehna chahti hun.
Samrat nods without a word. He takes the resignation letter she had left earlier on his table and hands it to her. Looking straight at him, she tears it up. And she's rewarded by the sight of his eyes lighting up with a smile.
For long moments, they stare at each other. And then a bell rings, and she comes to herself with a start. She looks away.
Gun: Main chalti hun. Meri class hai …
She gets up and leaves. At the door, she pauses for a long moment … and looks back.
And this time, the smile in his eyes spreads to his face. And is echoed by the smallest of smiles on hers.
She leaves. And Samrat looks up at his 'dude' and kisses his fingers to Him.
"Thanks, dude," he whispers.
