After the broadcasters, it was the turn of the producers to address the media with their side of the story. The members of the various production houses bodies such as the Association of Motion Pictures and TV Program Producers (AMPTPP), the Indian Motion Pictures' Producers Association (IMPPA) and the Producer's Guild addressed the press on November 11. Mukesh Bhatt, Chairperson of the Producers' Committee, at present, is the 'official spokesperson' of the producers, and it was he who addressed the media.
In his address, Bhatt made similar points as the broadcasters in context to the economic slowdown and the sensitivity of the issue hence. He also said that the only way any solution could be arrived at was if all the three bodies ' the broadcasters, producers and the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) ' got together on the issue, and 'overhauled' the system. Bhatt has made a few demands on behalf of the producers already, and at the core of it includes a change in the complete economic structuring of the content creation business, which in today's meet included films as much as it included television.
When exchange4media contacted a few officials from the broadcasting fraternity, it was learnt that the broadcasters were not yet directly notified on the 'need for all to meet'. From the status even at present, it does not appear that there is any solution that is being arrived at in the matter just yet. The standoff still continues, and from the looks of it, it will be a while before this resolves.
The broadcasters have stood united in this situation and have taken some of the most unprecedented and unexpected steps to solve this problem ' whether it was blocking all fresh programming or coordinating with each other in the manner that they are. From the producer's point of view, rates are only one part of the problem. There are problems in the basic working conditions as well. Until now, the producers have been the mediating body for all purposes between the broadcasters and the Federation.
