Vikram's payloads will

  • Measure the near-surface plasma (ions and electrons) density and its changes with time.
  • Carry out the measurements of thermal properties of the lunar surface near-polar region
  • Measure seismicity around the landing site and delineate the structure of the lunar crust and mantle.

Pragyan's payloads will

  • Derive the chemical composition and infer mineralogical composition to further enhance our understanding of the lunar surface
  • Determine the elemental composition (Mg, Al, Si, K, Ca, Ti, Fe) of lunar soil and rocks around the lunar landing site.

Wrap up: All you need to know

  • Chandrayaan-3’s lander Vikram is scheduled to make a soft landing on the moon at 6:04pm on August 23.
  • Chandrayaan 3's biggest challenge: Chandrayaan-3 has to drop its speed from1.68km/s (6,048km/hr) horizontally, changing direction to make the craft vertical and finally bringing it to zero after making a soft landing on the moon.
  • India's previous attempt to land on the lunar south pole failed in 2019.
  • Top scientist hospitalised hours after Luna-25 crash
  • Where to watch: The event will be live-streamed on ISRO's official website at isro.gov.in. The live streaming of the event will also be available on ISRO's YouTube channel and Facebook page.
  • We are confident as everything has been all fine so far and there have been no contingencies faced until this juncture: ISRO chief Somanath
  • ISRO shares more images taken by the Lander Imager Camera 4 onboard Chandrayaan.
  • The success of Chandrayaan-3 will be a great history created by the experts and scientists of India: Union Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia
  • The '15 minutes of terror' in Chandrayaan-3's landing: During the final 15 minutes of its descent onto the Moon's surface, Vikram lander must transition from a high-speed horizontal position to a vertical one. The success of this maneuver will determine the mission's outcome, echoing the sentiments of ISRO's former chairman, K Sivan, who once referred to this phase as "15 minutes of terror."
  • Expanded landing area, enhanced upgrades to ensure safer, successful mission, says former ISRO scientist.
