I recently got interested in this show, and pretty much skimmed past the whole story (I don't have the patience to watch every single episode) and I had a few questions.
when I initially started watching, Priya's character really drew me in. I thought she was extremely reserved and restrained, yet her strength was clearly visible in her decisions and in the way she took a stand for what she felt was right. I guess one could say that it was the grave undertones and the mystery surrounding her shady past that kept me hooked to the show. But the moment I saw her resolve buckle under the so-called idea of 'keeping-the-parivaar-happy-and-safe', I lost all my respect for this character. There's a question in the title of this show - 'lekin kab tak?'. Her character was supposed to drive home this question. She was supposed to be the change. Instead she too, succumbed to the dysfunctional lifestyle. I think the precise scene would have to be the one when she decides to stay in the same house as Brahmanand in spite of having seen him.
Now I feel as though this show is another one of those saas-bahu shows that over-glorify the importance of a perfect family, trivialize issues like rape and molestation, showcase women as eavesdropping, conspiring and scheming ladies whose only job is to cook in the kitchen and gossip about some bullsh*t, and dress them up like Ranis of the 15th century.
I really thought that this would be one show that would dare to take a stand against the very widespread issue of incestual/domestic rape and molestation. Alas, what we get is another C-grade sukhi parivaar saga. A woman, who has been molested by her father-in-law in the past, is now placing 'a honeymoon in shimla' on top of her priority list? what the hell is she trying to do anyway? wait for the right moment to tell the truth to her husband? First, this is about her, not him. it's her self-respect and body that has been exploited, not his. Second, she should have told him right away. true, he may not have supported her, but at least the respect that the viewers had for her character would remain intact. At least we would have been spared from the greatest character assassination that Indian TV has ever witnessed. At least the importance of a woman's self-respect would not be insulted. Instead of taking a stand where it should have been taken, the woman goes on a scheming and plotting rampage. this the 'protagonist' for you. great.
I just wish the show had kept it promise. I'm disappointed.
