Will post my thoughts later.

and yes, gandhari did indulge her sons. She tried to admonish Duri wayyy later.
Bhanumati was extremely jealous of draupadi' beauty and her status as beloved of 5 husbands.

I've never considered Gandhari to be a good mother myself - for her, blindfolding herself for Dhrit's sake seemed much more important than knocking some sense into her sons' heads when they were kids...

And the curse to Krishna is just 🤢

Granted it is all Krishna's leela, but still...actually daring to curse The Lord only shows how supportive she really was towards all the adharma committed by her own sons.

Also, she tried to knock some sense in both the hubby and the children, well that is good and all but wasn't she a little( read too much) late?
Better be safe than sorry?
She chose to ignore it for far too long and then suddenly she started "seeing", when things went out of control.

Look I do not believe that she was more evil than the other woman standing beside her - her DILFS in this case.

You see in 12th Std. History we are given a whole passage by Gandhari trying to pacify her sons and telling them to give up their egos and stubbornness, make up with the Pandavas and all that .. It was from Udyog Parva.
It was mostly asks questions like what do you think Gandhari wants here? What does this tell you about woman's condition in that period did women have power in Royal or Public courts?

Obvious answer is that No! woman did not have much power in political goings. It was mostly a man dominated world( oh shocker) but women like Draupadi, Kunti, Gandhari did wield a lot of power over the leaders of the politics world and swaying your Men to give up or buck up has always been seen. Now, only if they would use it right. Kunti and Draupadi were dear to Krishna. That is a whole lot of political power right there.
Gandhari too was involved in the court goings. When Dhritarashtra failed, he called her to knock some sense in Duryodhana. She came, she chided, gave the right advice and tried to persuade.

So how can I say that she is evil? Even Shakuni, after the partition had advised Duryodhana that he should be content with what he has got since Pandavas have acquired whatever they have today by their own work.
Duryodhana cared? No.

If he can ignore Shakuni's advice then he will ignore hers too. I do not have problem with it.
However I do know that all these women wanted their sons and husbands to be happy. How much will they actually protest if the husbands and Sons are convinced that they cannot be happy after doing this and having that?

What I am pointing out is that if we should not be blaming the parents for how the children turned out, so the parents shouldn't be blaming some other man who was younger than her own son. Did Krishna not try to pacify the situation? He wasn't there to act like a god, because that is what he had to do than why an Avatar? He could be doing it from his own home. He is here on earth, so he behaves like he is earthly. God doesn't really control our deeds, he let us make choices and deals with us accordingly. It is up to as to what path we chose and what decisions we make.

And if we are going with, he is not god then there you go ... he is not responsible for anything anyone does or doesn't.
That Yaksha had asked Yudhishthira that what is the supreme dharma? Yudhishthira replied that it is non-cruelty.

Also the famous lines he said, " You kill Dharma, Dharma will Kill you. You protect it, it will save you"

Yudhishthira's answers were right and his brothers were revived.

Totally agree- it was very clear that you weren't suggesting that she was "evil" in any sense. Evil is a deep concept in itself, there were evil deeds committed and by some like Shakuni, Duryodhana- they dedicated all their ambitions and desires to the path of unrighteousness and hence became evil in that sense. The beauty of the MB as mentioned by many, is that no one is black or white- all have shades of grey- they have human failings, the choices they make is what determines whether they are following dharma or not. And I totally agree that whilst we can't as such blame parents for the failings of their child, they have to take responsibility if they did not do their duty firmly enough and never guided them or stopped them when they were incorrect. And re blaming Krishna- exactly! It was rage born of grief but she did deep down know who was at fault and who deserved what, however again it goes to the weakness of character point, she wanted to still protect her sons and her clan and that maternal instinct again triumphed any sense of real dharma gyaan that she did posses.

Who wasnt blind in mahabharata?:

Shantanu was blind in his love for Ganga.for Ganga.
Bhishma was blind in his love for his father.
Fisherman (Satyavati's father) was blind in his desire to see his grandsons sit on the throne of the Kurus.
Amba was so blind in her desire for vengeance, she could not appreciate Shiva in front of her and ask for a better life.
Dhritrashtra was born blind.
Gandhari chose to be blind.
Shakuni was blinded by rage and perceived insult to his family.
Durvasa was blind in his haste to grant a potent boon, alas too early.
Kunti was blind in her haste to try out the boon, alas too soon.
Pandu was blind in his pursuit of game and love for his wives.
Bhishma was blind to the faults of those who sat on the throne of the Kurus.
Karna was blind to his own faults and blamed the world for it.
Duryodhan was blind in his greed and avarice to own everything.
Yudhishthir was blind in his desire to be good'.
Kauravas followed their eldest brother blindly, never questioning his immorality.
Pandavas followed their eldest brother blindly, never questioning his brand of morality'.
Kings of India blindly followed their sovereign king' without any questions.
Generals and soldiers blindly followed their liege lord' without any questions.
Drona was blind in his righteous rage against his friend.
Drupada was blind in his own version of righteous rage'.
Ashwathama was blind beyond all definitions of 'blind' when he tried to kill an innocent fetus.

even today the upbringing of children is the responsibility of the parents. parents who give their children proper guidance and values, reprimand them when they do wrong and give appropriate punishment , these children turn out to be good, responsible humans beings and citizens.
the Kaurav princes bad behavior is entirely the fault of their parents, Dhritrashtra and Gandhari. Dhritrashtra never reprimanded Duryodhan for any of his deeds, when he tried to kill bheem as a child. in the persuit of securing his sons future his shamefully misused and manipulated those in his power. Gandhari though knowing her sons were wrong, was never strong enough to oppose them son for the love of her sons she let them get away with evil deeds.

in their giref they blamed everybody else, but in truth all the blame lay solely at their own feet.

I would say she was more strong at heart than Dhritarashtra was, but she was also bound to him. If she 'blinded' herself so that they could have an equal footing, it really did no good to either of them. How much of the physical binding of her eyes plays into it?🤔

And what really did caught my attention is the fact that how this all happens. First (Yes! in her grief) she blames Yudhishthira and plans to curse him. Vyas comes and tries to persuade her to give it up.
Yudhishthira, he is the kind of person who just can't take it. He is guilt ridden and ready to throw everything away. He does not defend himself or anything. He declares he is the culprit and falls at her feet. She tests her awesome powers of burning people with her eyes. After she sees it works, she moves on.

She has this big argument with Bheema Bheema is scared but not guilty for anything. He asks her why she is blaming him when she did not do anything herself. They talk about both Dusashan and Duryodhana. He argues and defends himself. She moves on ..

There is Krishna, she is devastated and sad. She blames it all on him, for being God, for being Partial(because gods do that) and not trying hard enough. She curses.

Krishna smiles and accepts. Then he tells her not to grieve and reminds her how she herself was at fault.

At this point, there is just this need to blame, blame anyone for everything and curse at them.

Krishna is the easiest. He doesn't interrupt. Just lets her take it all out, then accepts the curse and with a reminder moves on.

In this state, you just want to blame someone else. Even if deep down she knew, she was not ready to accept it. So she would blame anyone who wasn't herself.

Krishna was the easiest.

Nice post!

Gandhari was perhaps equally blind as Dhritarashtra in her 'Putra-moh'. Her decision of blindfolding herself is adorable no doubt, but it had no particular footing or any association with someone's happiness/sadness. She could fulfil her duties even with the blindfold, alas she didn't seem to be bothered at all!
