Dhritarshtra crushed an iron statue thinking it to be Bhima
From KMG translation:
Dhritarashtra, exceedingly afflicted with grief on account of the slaughter of his sons, then reluctantly embraced the eldest son of Pandu, who was the cause of that slaughter. Having embraced Yudhishthira the just and spoken a few words of comfort to him, O Bharata, the wicked-souled Dhritarashtra sought for Bhima, like a blazing fire ready to burn everything that would approach it. Indeed, that fire of his wrath, fanned by the wind of his grief, seemed then to be ready to consume the Bhima-forest. Ascertaining the evil intentions cherished by him towards Bhima, Krishna, dragging away the real Bhima, presented an iron statue of the second son of Pandu to the old king. Possessed of great intelligence, Krishna had, at the very outset, understood the intentions of Dhritarashtra, and had, therefore, kept such a contrivance ready for baffling them. Seizing with his two arms that iron Bhima, king Dhritarashtra, possessed of great strength, broke into pieces, thinking it to be Bhima himself in flesh and blood. Endued with might equal to that of 10,000 elephants, the king reduced that statue into fragments. His own breast, however, became considerably bruised and he began to vomit blood. Covered with blood, the king fell down on the ground like a parijata tree topped with its flowery burden. His learned charioteer Sanjaya, the son of Gavalgana, raised the monarch and soothing and comforting him, said, Do not act so.' The king then, having cast off his wrath and returned to his normal disposition, became filled with grief and began to weep aloud, saying, Alas, oh Bhima, alas, oh Bhima!' Understanding that he was no longer under the influence of wrath, and that he was truly sorry for having (as he believed) killed Bhima, Vasudeva, that foremost of men, said these words, Do not grieve, O Dhritarashtra, for thou hast not slain Bhimasena! That is an iron statue, O king, which has been broken by thee! Understanding that thou wert filled with rage, O bull of Bharata's race, I dragged the son of Kunti away from within the jaws of Death. O tiger among kings, there is none equal to thee in strength of body. What man is there, O mighty-armed one, that would endure pressure of thy arms? Indeed, as no one can escape with life from an encounter with the Destroyer himself, even so no body can come out safe from within thy embrace. It was for this that yonder iron statue of Bhima, which had been caused to be made by thy son, had been kept ready for thee.'

I don't understand from which angle gandhari can be described as 'foresighted'.
Clearly, she did not see any of this coming or did she ?

When she blindfolded herself, she did so to feel the experience of blindness just as her husband it.
Did she any other wise reasons for this?

Why did she not foresee that her children will need her and that she will need to be there for them to help, guide, discipline, support?
With all her foresight and perceptiveness how did she miss the fact that her evil brother was poisoning the minds of her husband and children?
How did she miss the fact that shakuni should be staying in Gandhar and rule in his own kingdom rather than mess with the heads of Drit and sons? Didn't shakuni have a wife and children with whom he must be living? Did she not see this as irregukar?
How did she miss all the unfairness and injustice dished out to Pandu, Kunti and the Pandavas?

Methinks- yes, she perhaps had the gift of foresight and that's exactly why she blindfolded herself early on - so that she could absolve herself of any responsibly for the destruction that is to follow. She spent her life in denial of the evil around her and of her own capacity for becoming evil. The blindfold helped as a metaphoric screen that shielded her from the knowledge and awareness of what was to come.

I see her as a one dimensional person who ultimately only put herself and everything related to herself ( husband, sons) ahead of everything else. Despite all the dialogues that she has spouted about the good of the people etc., her actions or lack of actions ( passivity)have pointed towards a self -centred , morally weak person.

She did not fulfil her role as a queen, wife or mother adequately - she failed to protect even her own family from ill treatment, deceit and disgrace, . There is not evidence that she was the 'karyeshu mantri' to drit, nor a good mother to her misguided children.

As a mother myself I am horrified that she still does not think she must tell her sons and Drit off their horrific behaviour...she only thinks of saving them from being cursed... and joins them in the injustice...all in the name of 'putra moh' ..

I am not sure from what angle she is seen by some as 'great ' and why she is counted as one of the 'great women' in India...Mother India she is certainly not!!

It seems you are simply not prepared to forgive even the most obvious human traits of the Kaurava parents like anger (in the midst of a pile of rotting filial corpses) at the person who personally killed each one of their 100 sons or a person who claims to be god, therefore above human flaws, and thus may have prevented the massacre! Its not as if Gandhari, or even Dhritarashtra, never censured their children at all or that they had no conscience. Jealousy, anger, pride, helplessness, preference of one's own children's interest etc are perfectly understandable aspects of human nature. This is the reason I find this form of 'social' Platonic idealism to be ridiculous, because when you have such unrealistic ideas of 'Ideal parent' or 'Ideal woman' or 'Ideal man' etc etc, even the most basic human traits become inexcusable crimes.

Who am I really to forgive or not?
It is not as if she personally wronged me. People say she is the Purest faultless woman in MB. I just gave reasons as to why I think that is not the case at all.

I also did say that she tried to get her sons and Husband in a line, but she was doing it when it was already too late.

And i guess that even Dhritarashtra tried to get his sons to leave the path had chosen, but he is not really a character from which you can expect much. He was "glad at heart" when Draupadi was won by Shakuni. He was not really strong willed since the beginning.

So that is just simply what i believe obviously so i posted. That is what everyone does on the Forum right?
I cannot forget, but i do not have anything to forgive either.

hell i never expected such a thread! i was so angry on the CVs for the precap and to my surprise i find people thinking like this for Gandhari!!

Isnt this the typical indian mindset - blame the mother for all the faults of her children???

come on people, thinka bit from her perspective and in retrospect of the circumstances in which she says those things!

@ medha:

u say the DILs were jealous of draupadi.
yes they were initially , doesnt mean they were ok with VH or didnt protest.
Then when Draupadi was about to set out she went unto the illustrious Pritha and solicited her leave. And she also asked leave of the other ladies of the household who had all been plunged into grief. And saluting and embracing every one of them as each deserved, she desired to go away.
The wives of the Bharatas, uniting with Gandhari upon beholding virtuous Krishna, the wedded wife of the Pandavas, endued with
beauty and youth, dragged into the court, set up frightful wail. Even now, along with all my subjects, they weep every day.

when does gandhari doesnt rebuke her sons?
She tells Dhrit not to harbour false hopes that Duryodhana would win against Pandavas because veteran warriors like Bhishma, Drona, Kripa and others are with him. "They might fight for Duryodhana because of a sense of loyalty to him for having been in his service (rajapinda bhayat); and, they might even give up their lives for him. But, it would be foolish of Duryodhana to depend on these men to secure him a victory in the final war. He should be beware of these old fighters who well know in their hearts what is right (dharma), and who will therefore bring no serious harm to the Pandavas".

In the Sabha Parva, She advised her husband to stop the (first) game of dice. Then again, after the second dice game, Gandhari chides Dhritarastra for allowing Duryodhana to humiliate Draupadi in the open court. This reprehensible act, she said, would surely rekindle a dead fire, topple a bridge re-built and destroy his whole dynasty.

In the Udyoga Parva, after Krishna's failed attempts to bring about peace between the warring groups of cousins, the King Dhritarastra asks Gandhari to be brought into the court. He was hoping that his mother's words of love and wisdom might help Duryodhana to see reason and give up the belligerent path. She did try honestly to counsel her angry son; pleaded with him to eschew the needless war. But, of course, she too fails to convince him.
She blames Dhritarastra for undue fondness for his sons and for not disciplining them despite being aware of their unrighteous desires and thoughtless methods. It is too late now for force,' she says. Krishna too appreciates her efforts: "You have, in the open court, repeatedly and rightly spoken words wisdom and justice for the welfare of both the sides thirsting for war"(Mbh. IX.62.57).

Before going into the battle on the final day , Duryodhana seeks the blessings of his mother . She does bless him heartily. But , she also remarks " Listen to my words , O fool , where there is righteousness there is victory ( Srunu mudha vachomyaham yato dharmastato jayah - Salya Parva 63.62).

Krishna again lauds Gandhari " O the gracious Lady , there is none comperable to you in the whole world" (tat samam nasti loke sminnadya simantini shubhe - Salya Parva 63.59)

just because her sons or husband doesnt isten to her , it doesnt make her to be wrong!

if she wanted to curse yudi why would she even divert her eyes to the ground? and as per the text its not his feet but finger nails. the lady has lost all of her sons and grandsons but she is not even allowed to singe yudi'd finger nails!!! wow!!
and then bhim tells an open lie that the blood did not pass through his lips!!really??

was gandhari a bad stepmother to yuyutsu? does she ever fault him for changing sides?

The earth, strewn with severed heads and hands and other limbs mingled together and gathered in large heaps, looks resplendent with these signs of havoc! Beholding many headless trunks of great beauty, and many heads without trunks, those fair ones have been lying senseless on the ground for a long while. Uniting particular heads with particular trunks, those ladies, senseless with grief, are again discovering their mistakes and saying, "This is not this one's," and are weeping more bitterly! Others, uniting arms and thighs and feet, cut off with shafts, are giving way to grief and losing their senses repeatedly (at the sight of the restored forms). Some amongst the Bharata ladies, beholding the bodies of their lords,"bodies that have been mangled by animals and birds and severed of their heads,"are not succeeding in recognising them. Others, beholding their brothers, sires, sons, and husbands slain by foes, are, O destroyer of Madhu, striking their heads with their own hands.

this is the sight she sees her sons and grandsons for first time after her marriage! how will any mother react? how can anyone not feel anger?

yes she curses the God Krishna for the injustice to her. Any other women in her place would have done the same. thats what we all do when we are in grief and deeated by life - turn to god and blame him for everything! that doesnt make her a bad person - just humane.

IMO , if only she had not blindfolded herself , maybe things would have been better, but who knows??

p.s. my post has come out a bit strongly but i mean no offense to anyone
