The curse for Aswathama was for only 3,000 years. Considering Mahabharata happened some 5,000 years ago, his curse is not in action but he is alive.

"..The holy one said, "The fall of this mighty weapon will not be fruitless. The foetus will die. But being dead, it will live again and have a long life! As regards thyself, all wise men know thee for a coward and a sinful wretch! Always engaged in sinful acts, thou art the slayer of children. For this reason, thou must have to bear the fruit of these thy sins. For 3,000 years thou shalt wander over this earth, without a companion and without being able to talk with anyone. Alone and without anybody by thy side, thou shalt wander through diverse countries, O wretch, thou shalt have no place in the midst of men. The stench of pus and blood shall emanate from thee, and inaccessible forests and dreary moors shall be thy abode! Thou shalt wander over the Earth, O thou of sinful soul, with the weight of all diseases on thee.."

true he got cursed ... to bear the sins of all the people on his shoulders and that he will roam alone like a ghost without getting any courtesy till the end of kaliyuga ... he also had a precious maani (which i believe had some yogic powers) on his forehead which was removed by Lord Krishna as well ... and that part of his head would always be sore!

guess Ashwathama got the worst of them all ... his sufferings haven't ended as yet..
but considering that he is still alive even today is pretty overwhelming and scary at the same time 😆

Ashwathama still living is not that he as a person is still alive...it is just symbolic that there is an ashwathama in everyone...he is the one there in all dirty deeds...thats y he is supposed to b alive till the end of mankind...

thank you so much! ... pretty much sums everything!
if am not sure if this been answered before ... but what was the approx. time duration ... the pandavas return from exile and the start of the war?

and also ...i know the time was frozen during the geeta gyan to Arjun ... but is there any citation of how long the actual geeta citation take? ... or with time frozen there is no account for the time during this? ... for others on the war field it looked like just a second had passed ... maybe sanjaya's narration to dhritarashtra has some clues?

thanks for taking out time and answering!

As per this site http://www.hindunet.org/hindu_history/ancient/mahabharat/mahab_patnaik.html
The Pandavas stayed in Upaplavya for 1 year and 3 months after their period of exile was over. During this time the peace talks and gathering of the forces etc. all took place before they gathered at Kurukshetra for the war.

I have no clue what the others were doing during Gita gyan? I am as intrigued as you are

i have a question... as i am still reading and learning ...

i have heard many times people saying that Abhimanyu was not 16 when he fought in the war ... he was around 32 or so ... and maybe there are contradictory citations available for both ...

lets suppose Abhimanyu was all of 32 when he fought the war ... which makes Yudhisthir and Draupadi's son who i believe what the eldest of the Upapandavas ... Prativindha to be around 40-42 years of age (i am not sure of the age difference just stating approximately) ... so if he was around 40 why was he not married? or was he? and if he was did he have kids? what happened to those kids?

if Prativindha (or all the Upapandavas) were not married before the war ... why didn't the Padavas get them married just like they got Abhimanyu married before the war?? ...

are there any citations or explanations ... am just curious to know 😆

I dunno about citations but would like to believe that Prativindhya and majority of the other Ups, if not all, were married with children before the war started...😊

IMO Parikshit was made heir for sheer political reasons... Without Krishna's help the war couldn't have been won by the Pandavas and Parikshit was Krishna's grandson...😃

I dont think the time was frozen excluding Krishna, Arjun, Sanjaya and Dhrid.. the condensed version I read does not mention it.. as per KMG translation, BG seems to happen when the war was in the initial stages, probably limited to the soldiers front.. I am not sure if later on in KMG a time freeze is mentioned..

Then beholding the Dhartarashtra troops drawn up, the ape-bannered son of Pandu, rising his bow, when, the throwing of missiles had just commenced, said these words, O lord of earth, to Hrishikesha.

"Arjuna said,--'O thou that knoweth no deterioration, place my car (once) between the two armies, so that I may observe these that stand here desirous of battle, and with whom I shall have to contend in the labours of this struggle.I will observe those who are assembled here and who are prepared to fight for doing what is agreeable in battle to the evil-minded son of Dhritarashtra.'"

Sanjaya continued,---'Thus addressed by Gudakesa, O Bharata, Hrishikesa, placing that excellent car between the two armies, in view of Bhishma and Drona and all the kings of the earth, said,--'Behold, O Partha these assembled Kurus,--And there the son of Pritha beheld, standing (his) sires and grandsons, and friends, and father-in-law and well-wishers, in both the armies. Beholding all those kinsmen standing (there), the son of Kunti, possessed by excessive pity, despondingly said (these words).

really appreciate !! ... thanks for the link ... read of so many things i didn't know .. liked how everything revolves around Yudhishthir's age ... its interesting to know he was around 91 during the war ..
the link summarizes the order of events quite well ... was looking to read something like for a while ...am kinda overjoyed to have read it

just one more question ... about Kunti's mantra prasad ... i am intrigued to know if Kunti actually carried her kids in her womb for 9 months? or did she sit and chant the mantra prasad for 9 months? or was she just given the baby in her arms? ... pardon my ignorance 😆
