Huma Qureshi has joined the ongoing conversation around paparazzi and their role in the industry, days after Jaya Bachchan’s sharp comments that sparked debate online. While Jaya criticised the behaviour and appearance of some photographers, Huma took a different position and called them an important part of the ecosystem.
In an interview with India Today, Huma described her relationship with the paparazzi as very healthy. She said actors rely on them more than they admit. According to her, the visibility they provide helps during promotions and even during quieter phases when a celebrity wants to put something out in public. She said, “I think they are also important. I won’t lie, but we use them when we need to promote our films or bring a certain aspect of our lives into the public eye. When we want to be spotted somewhere, we call them.”
She added that blaming photographers for everything is unfair because the exchange works both ways. At the same time, Huma spoke about learning to set boundaries. Whenever she isn’t comfortable or doesn’t want to be clicked, she simply requests them to avoid taking pictures of her, and they usually listen. She also mentioned that photographers have captured her from angles she did not like, and she now tells them immediately when something feels off.
Huma pointed out that intrusions happen, especially with female actors. She said inappropriate questions, difficult situations at press events and attempts to capture awkward angles are all part of her experience. She noted that there is a line that should not be crossed, but people often cross it regardless. Her approach is simple. “Don’t misbehave and don’t let others misbehave,” she said.
Jaya Bachchan’s remarks came during a conversation with Barkha Dutt, where she criticised paparazzi and questioned their training and behaviour. She said her relationship with the press is strong because she comes from a media background, but she does not consider paparazzi part of that world. She questioned their credentials and said some behave in ways that are inappropriate, using the phrase gande tight pant pehenke while describing them.
Huma’s comments offer a contrast, placing the spotlight on mutual dependence and the need for clear limits.
