In my opinion all the characters in mahabharatha played their parts in the drama God in the form of Krishna made them enact. His descending on earth itself was with the view to lightening the burden of mother earth. For that he had to supervise destruction of mankind on a massive scale which only a world war of the kind of kurukshetra war could ensure. Each one of them were mere agents in His hands. That said ,the entire story seems so realistic and so relatable that even today we are able to interpret in umpteen ways. There lies the greatness of the epic written by vedvyas.

Duryodhan, supported by his company.

War took place becoz he refused to give even 5 villages even after the insistence of so many men. It was only becoz of him that war happened. 😡
wish he was killed right after his birth as Vidura suggested.

We can't simply disagree to the fact that SHAKUNI was one of the reasons. But, we can't deny that Shakuni was very intelligent and clever.(In the wrong way obvio!) So he knew that if Dury and Pandavs come face to face.. Pandavs had a very big chance of winning because of Krishna in their side.(Shakuni always thought Krishna was helping Pandavs...in the serial also he tells Dury to befriend him.) So, would he really support a war? Obviosly when there was no other way..and all Shakuni's tricks ended then war. Shakuni always played his game from the back. Sometimes made Dury and Dushy do the tasks he wished.. Sometimes trying to brainwash Dhrit and sometimes trying to act good in front of Bheeshma. 😆

PS- This goes for everyone who thinks Shakuni was the reason. I don't say a complete no. But my point of view is this.

Yep ... i agree
but seeds were sowed by Bheeshma... when he had forced Gandhaari to marry a blind Dhrit then that time Shakuni who used to love his sister Gandhaari more than his life had taken an oath to finish KuruVansh. And that's why he did whatever he could to fulfill his oath.
i had read it in some book.

Dhritrashtra - His blind love for Duri & co.

Gandhara - She should have guided and helped her husband by being an eye to the blind king. She could have imparted good culture in her sons.

Totally agree. I always thought that was a very misguided way of showing devotion. If your spouse cannot see, shouldn't you be his eyes instead of blinding yourself as well?

For you kind information, Bheeshma forcing Gandhari...Shakuni's revenge is just a FOLKLORE! Shakuni had no issues with his sister's marriage. This is quite evident in the original texts. So stop forcing fake accusations on the footing of whatever you read in any book.

I went thru this post and replies .. I dont think there was any one particular reason for War. I agree somewhat with evryone n their reasons... it started with satyawati's ambitious demands... bheeshma blind love for his father and his duty, dritrashtra 's ambition to become king and trying to fulfil same thru his son ..by turning blind towards the path his son is adopting for acquiring it.. and then Shakuni's revenge or you call blind love for his sister .. and then bigger reason came with dury's greed for kingdom.. his ego n jealousy played a bigger role.. and ultimately lead to draupadi's insult.. i wont blame draupadi for what she pledged ..coz it was all kind of building up... for ultimate disaster.. and somewhere someone had to just put a stop to all this... I wud say Draupadi's insult bought ultimate low point in the story... where righteous ones did realise that enough is enough..and they need to fight for justice..

Had he given those 5 villages, then what? The war would have been postponed but it would have happened anyways ... Duri and Co. they just couldn't be content with peace .. it was like a constant itch to get under the skins of Pandavas ..
Wouldn't have done any good .. just result in them doing something even more idiotic ... the tension would have skyrocketed into the next universe and the explosion would have been even bigger ...

I am not forcing any fake accusations on anyone and that is quite evident from your reply itself. Everyone is giving their opinion so whats wrong with mine? Just because I pointed towards Bheeshma's one karma?? As it is his silence can also be blamed and he did play his part which finally lead to Kurukshetra.
