Speared by evil quartet, Cartel Dhrit's abounding jealousy to Pandav's wealth, deceitful seizure and subsequent tacit refusals to return the unlawful possession were obvious reasons. But on operative Dynamics, if a single upshot was to be cited, it's Draupadi's vastraaharan in full public that set the war as point of no return. Symbolically It underscored their animal disregard for human values or a woman's dignity; if they can think of undressing a Princess in their own court in full view...🤢
All those who connived were set for destruction. Tellingly, their ends mirrored their individual actions at the time of this particular infraction; Dury's broken thigh, Dushashan's gory end and Karna's ignominious, defenceless end bereft of his knowledge- for setting atrocity on a defenceless woman in motion. And Shakuni too.

Well written! I also think Draupadi's vastra haran symbolized the Kurukshetra war. All the Kauravas, Shakuni, and Karna who played a role in the humiliation of Draupadi met their ends in a gory, pitiable way. The great dice master Shakuni was killed like an ordinary warrior by Sahadev. Karna who considered himself extremely knowledgeable and quoted the shastras to humiliate Draupadi was bereft of knowledge when he most needed it. Duryodhana who had mockingly told Draupadi to come and sit on his thigh had that very thigh broken, and Dushashan who had dragged Draupadi by the hair during her menstrual period and humiliated her in full view of the court was killed in the goriest of manners, and the very Draupadi did not comb or braid her hair until she had washed it with that man's blood.

War cannot be blamed on one person alone. It was building up for quite sometime and there were series of mistakes, blunders all leading to the great war.
But to answer who started it ---for me it was Shantanu. Bheeshmas Father.
He fully knew Bheeshma was the best that could have happened to Hastinapur----but he gave his feelings more priority. As a king he should have put his country's interest before his own.

So for me its Shantanu.

I would say a repeated pattern of choosing personal responsibility/feelings/ambitions over greater good by the royal family of HP. Almost everyone made emotional spur of the moment decisions.

Bhishma : He choose his responsibility for his father and later his vow over greater good for the masses. He chose to abduct or browbeat powerful and worthy princess into marraige for his useless stepbrothers and nephews. He chose to ignore the incapability and incompetence of his stepbrothers and nephews as kings over years

Satyavati: Her ambitions surpassed her commonsense. Even as queen, she continued to defend her sons and using Bhishma as their protector and match-maker all through.

Shantanu : He chose his lust for Satyavati over his responsibilities as king to an extent that his son made an impetuous and unfair decision.

Vichitravirya: He was spoilt by Satyavati and chose to spend his life drinking and antagonizing others rather than shoulder his responsibilities as king thus acquiring the enmity of all his neighbors including Panchal.

Dhrit: His ambition for throne and later his love for his son over everything so much so that he ignored multiple assasination attempts, humiliation of kul-vadhu Draupadi and so on

Pandu: His repentance for his deed over good of kingdom...he could have chosen the harder path of being an ascetic king. He also ended up fostering 5 sons despite the fact that he did not need them

Gandhari: She chose her responsibility as wife or punish kurus depending on your perspective and become a non-entity in political game rather than be a smart queen guiding her husband and son.

Shakuni: He chose his anger over Gandhari's perceived humiliation over good of both Gandhar and HP

Kauravas and Pandavas were just the aftermath of two generations of impetuous decision-making with no accountability. I blame both Pandava's extreme tolerance and Duryodhana's evil on their upbringing and circumstances. Draupadi was just catalyst in the whole saga where sooner or later war was inevitable.

It is ironical that as you look through 3 generation...you find that the only person capable of ascending the throne and be a great king/warrior in his own rights was Bhishma. None of the Pandavas measured up individually.

I thought it was only in Star Bharata that Vichi was a drunkard... was it there in KMG too?

he was affected by a chronic disease.. similar to tuberculosis.. forgot the name.. here it is.. doesn't say anything abt he being a drunkard.. but his enimity with Panchal though not covered in KMG should be from other versions.. including Bhishma's gate crashing.. which makes sense abt why Drupada wanted a son to kill Bhishma, which KMG version fails to explain..

And Vichitravirya also, endued with the prowess of the celestials and the beauty of the twin Aswins, could steal the heart of any beautiful woman. And the prince passed seven years uninterruptedly in the company of his wives. He was attacked while yet in the prime of youth, with phthisis. Friends and relatives in consultation with one another tried to effect a cure. But in spite of all efforts, the Kuru prince died, setting like the evening sun. The virtuous Bhishma then became plunged into anxiety and grief, and in consultation with Satyavati caused the obsequial rites of the deceased to be performed by learned priests and the several of the Kuru race.'"
