Rain, Coffee aur Thoda Pyaar
One the occasion of my birthday đ«¶đ»
The ETF office buzzed unusually early that morning. The smell of freshly brewed coffee mixed with the faint hum of Shreeâs computer. Chotu was munching on samosas from the canteen, while Ayesha sat cross-legged on a desk, flipping through case files.
Rathod entered first, crisp uniform, sharp expression. âGood morning, team,â he said with that deep voice of command.
âGood morning, Sir!â echoed the roomâwell, everyone except one.
At the far end, Arjun Suryakant Rawte leaned back in his chair, arms crossed, eyes on the file but mind clearly elsewhere. His presence commanded silence, yet somehow Riyaâs chatter managed to pierce even his stoic bubble.
âSir! Yeh dekhiye,â Riya chirped, sliding a file in front of him. âLast night ke club cameras ke frames main kuch weird dikha tha. Main ne zoom karke dekhaââ
Arjun didnât look up. âAur weird tumhara excitement hai, Riya,â he muttered dryly.
Riya pouted. âSir, main serious hoon.â
That earned her a fleeting smirkâblink and youâd miss itâbut Shree caught it. âOho! ACP Rawte actually smiled! Quick, someone note the date and time!â
âShree!â Riya glared, but the blush had already crept up her cheeks.
Chotu joined in, laughing, âLagta hai Rawte sir ke smile ki wajah kuch khaas hai, haan?â
Arjun gave them that lookâone that could silence even thunder. The team froze. A beat passed. Then Arjunâs lips twitched again, almost amused.
âKaam kar lo, warna Rathod tum sabko field pe bhej dega bina lunch ke,â he said quietly.
Rathod, entering just then, raised an eyebrow. âKisne bola? Mujhe bhi pata chale.â
The office burst into laughter.

By afternoon, a different kind of operation had begunâOperation: Arjun ka Birthday.
Rathod had discovered that the day happened to be Arjunâs birthdayâa fact Arjun would never acknowledge himself.
âSir, hume kuch karna chahiye,â Riya insisted, eyes sparkling with mischief.
Shree typed furiously on his computer. âAlready planning it, Ri. Party. Cake. Decorations. Secret code name: Operation Aââ
âOperation A?â Chotu snorted. âZyada creative naam nahi mila?â
Ayesha rolled her eyes. âFocus, boys. Riya, tum distract karogi Arjun ko. Simple. Usse office se bahar le jao, hum sab yahan sab ready kar lenge.â
Riya froze. âMain?! Sir ko distract karu?â
Shree smirked. âKya hua, Ri? Nervous?â
She glared. âBilkul nahi!â Then softly added, âBas... thoda difficult hai na, woh...â
âWoh?â Ayesha teased.
âWoh... intimidating,â Riya admitted.
Chotu chuckled. âIntimidating? Rawte sir toh sirf case ke waqt hote hain aise. Baaki time... hmm...â
âBaaki time bhi same hote hain,â Shree interrupted. âBas Riya ke saamne thoda zyada intense lagte hain.â
âShree!â she hissed, throwing a file at him.

Arjun stood near the balcony, coffee mug in hand, eyes scanning the distant city. Riya approached hesitantly, file in hand, rehearsing in her head.
âSir, woh... mujhe kuch poochna tha,â she began.
âPoocho.â
âWoh... coffee pe chalein?â
Arjun blinked. âExcuse me?â
âMatlab... discussion ke liye! Case discuss karte hue coffee le lete hain!â she corrected hurriedly, cheeks pink.
He watched her squirm for a momentâthen nodded. âFine.â
A few minutes later, they sat at the small café across the street. Riya stirred her cappuccino, trying to act casual, but her heart was practically doing somersaults.
Arjun, as usual, was calm, sipping his black coffee.
âSir, aapko kabhi lagta hai... life thodi boring hai?â she asked suddenly.
He looked at her. âTumhare aas-paas boring? Mushkil hai.â
Riya blinked. âAap... compliment kar rahe the?â
âObservation tha,â he said, deadpanâbut the corner of his lips curled, betraying him.
Riya giggled. âAapke observation ke tone main toh compliment kaafi clearly sunai diya.â
He shook his head. âTum impossible ho.â
âThank you,â she said brightly.
He sighed, but there was fondness in his eyesâa rare softness that Riya caught just before her phone buzzed.
Message from Shree: âAll set. Delay him 10 more minutes. Over and out.â
Riya panicked. Ten more minutes?!
She fumbled for conversation. âSir, aapne kabhi birthday celebrate nahi kiya?â
Arjunâs eyebrow twitched. âKaise pata tumhe aaj mera birthday hai?â
Oops.
âWoh... main... actually... bas... Shree ne bola thaâmera matlab nahiââ
He leaned back. âOperation Birthday Surprise, hmm?â
Her eyes widened. âAapko kaiseââ
âETF main hoon, Riya. Observation skills hain.â
She bit her lip, embarrassed. âToh aap gussa nahi hain?â
He exhaled softly. âNahi. Bas... unnecessary hai.â
âUnnecessary nahi, sir. Kabhi kabhi... khushi bina reason ke bhi milni chahiye.â
For a second, the seriousness in her eyes made him forget how to breathe. Then he murmured, âTum bhi ek reason ho khushi ka, Riya.â
She blinked, stunned. âSir?â
âObservation tha,â he said again, smirking into his cup.
Her heart fluttered like crazy.

Evening approached, and the âsurpriseâ turned into a full-on outing plan. Rathod officially announced, âTomorrowâs team-bonding exerciseâpicnic. Non-negotiable.â
Shree and Chotu cheered; Ayesha grinned; Riya practically bounced. Arjun, however, groaned silently.
Next morning at the park, Shree was setting up cricket gear, Chotu was unpacking food, and Riya arrived in jeans and a soft lavender top, looking radiant.
Arjun, wearing a casual black t-shirt and shades, looked every bit the reluctant participant.
Shree whispered to Riya, âTumhara hero aa gaya.â
She smacked his arm lightly. âShut up, Shree.â
They played cricket first. Riya batted. Arjun bowled. The team chanted, âRiya! Riya!â
âReady?â Arjun asked, tone teasingly calm.
âAlways,â she replied, chin up.
He bowledâa perfect spin. Riya swungâmissedâand the ball gently tapped her leg.
âOut,â Arjun said, almost smiling.
âCheating!â she protested. âAapne toh slow ball daala tha!â
âTumhe laga main easy lunga?â
âHmph!â she crossed her arms, but her lips curved in a smile.
Shree laughed. âAap dono ka chemistry toh cricket se zyada interesting hai.â

On the drive back, dark clouds gathered. The rain poured suddenly, drenching the city. The team took shelter at the office, power flickering out moments later.
âPower cut,â Shree groaned. âKuch toh karo, yaar!â
âRelax,â Ayesha said. âLetâs play something. Rapid fire?â
Everyone agreed. Even Arjun stayed, silently sipping coffee.
Rathod started. âFavorite color?â
âAyesha?â Rathod smiled.
âBlue,â she answered.
âShree?â
âGadgets. Matlab silver!â
âRiya?â
âLavender,â she said softly.
Then Shree grinned wickedly. âAur Rawte sir ka?â
All eyes turned. Arjun didnât answer.
Riya teased, âSir, bataiye na. Favorite color?â
He looked at her for a long moment and said quietly, âLavender.â
The room went silent for two beats. Riya froze. Her heart skipped. Shree and Chotu exchanged looks but said nothing.
The power flickered back on, lights glimmering as rain continued outside.
Later, as the others left, Riya lingered by the window. Arjun joined her silently.
âSir, aapne sach mein lavender bola tha?â she asked shyly.
He shrugged lightly. âObservation tha.â
She smiled. âObservation... ya confession?â
He didnât reply immediately. Instead, he looked at her, eyes soft yet intense. âTumhe jo samajhna hai, samajh lo, Riya.â
A quiet laugh escaped her lips. âToh main samajh leti hoon... ki aapko coffee aur lavender dono pasand hain.â
He smiledâa real one this time. âAur tum dono ho.â
Her breath caught.
Outside, thunder rolled faintly, but inside, everything stilledâtwo hearts caught between unspoken words and quiet realization.
Riya blushed furiously, looking away. âSir...â
âObservation tha,â he whispered again, but the faint warmth in his tone gave it away completely.

The next day, the team entered to find a box of lavender macarons on the desk with a note:
For the best observation ever â Riya đ
Arjun glanced at it, shook his head with a rare, fond smile, and murmured,
âTum impossible ho, Riya.â
From across the room, she called sweetly, âThank you, sir!â
The team burst into laughter.
And for once, even the great Arjun Rawte didnât mind the chaos.

Light rain, black coffee, lavender blush â and one quiet âobservationâ that said everything words never could. đ
