African football chief Patrice Motsepe has expressed complete faith that the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations will take place in Morocco as planned, despite ongoing protests in the country. The tournament is scheduled from December 21 to January 18, featuring 24 teams across nine venues.

Morocco has witnessed over a week of demonstrations, with thousands of young citizens demanding political reforms, better public services, and a stronger response to inequality. Yet, Motsepe remains firm that the event will not be moved or delayed.

‘Morocco Is Plan A, B, and C’

Speaking at a gathering of football officials in Kinshasa, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) president said, “We are absolutely confident the AFCON will go ahead as planned.” Motsepe emphasized that Morocco remains the only venue under consideration, reassuring that CAF will collaborate closely with the Moroccan government and local authorities to ensure a successful tournament.

Top African players such as Mohamed Salah and Achraf Hakimi are expected to feature, adding to the event’s draw. Morocco last hosted AFCON in 1988 and was set to host again in 2015 before withdrawing due to Ebola concerns.

African Football League to Be Revived

Motsepe also spoke about CAF’s efforts to relaunch the African Football League, which had an underwhelming debut in 2023. The initial grand plan for 24 clubs was scaled down to eight teams, with South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns lifting the trophy. He said discussions are underway to restore the league’s full structure, calling it a vital project for the continent’s football ecosystem.

The CAF chief highlighted the organization’s financial turnaround since he took charge in 2021. A profit of $9.48 million was reported for the 2023-24 financial year, and a surplus of $28.45 million is projected for the next. Motsepe said revenues have quadrupled and reiterated CAF’s focus on transparency, fair play, and investing in players and national teams.
