What crap they are showing? Ashwatthama was never a man who used to plot with Duryodhan. He used to consider both the sides his friends and his jealousy with Arjun never turned into hatred.
Ashwatthama never hated the pandavas at first and became vengeful only after his father was killed. He didn't let them attend his father's funeral.
Also, Ashwatthama releasing his arrow mistaking Eklavya as Arjun was utter crap.

See , this is what i know of Ashwathama .

Ashwathama was NOT overtly jealous of Arjun . He had no cause to be jealous as whatever was taught to Arjun was taught to him too . In the war , he , Arjun , Karna knew special skills ...a bit extra than others . He was the among the few to know how to use the Brahma astra ...known only by Bheeshma , Drona , Krishna himself and Arjun . The CVs r using the jealousy factor as another dramatic ploy . The truth is

Ashwathama was not overtly jealous of Arjun but Arjun was jealous of Eklavya , yes . Much as he was good in other aspects , Arjun had an ego about his archery . Ashwathama sometimes wondered if he would replace him in his father's affections but Drona loved him so much that his doubts were often rested .

Ashwathama was neutral . He was a friend of the Pandavas but got along fabulously well with Duryodhan .

His bond with Drona ...the father son bond is interesting and touching . They both loved each other very much ...they both killed for each other . Drona killed himself by not lifting any arms in defence and sitting listlessly in meditation in his chariot and Ashwathama , enraged used the Brahma astra and killed the sleeping sons of the Pandavas to destroy their dynasty .

Ashwathama was the apple of Drona's eyes and he knew it and was content in the knowledge .

In the war both Drona and Ashwathama fought from the Kuru side as they were in employment of the Kurus .

Ashwathama would NEVER speak rudely to Drona as shown in the serial .

Ashwathama fell out with Duryodhana for 4 days of the war . Tempers were high then , and Duryodhan taunted Drona who had promised to bring Yudhishtir before him . Yudhistir was still not captured and Duryodhan taunted Drona . Ashwathama lost his temper at his father's insult . Such was his love for his father .

But after 4 days Drona was killed by trickery by Pandavas who spread the lies of Ashwathama's death to demoralize him .

This grief was more . So Ashwathama fought on Duryodhan's side with teeth gritting vigour .

When the war was lost Ashwathama knew where Duryodhan was hiding . When Duryodhan too was killed with trickery he became inflamed with rage , sorrow and revenge . He promised a dying Duryodhan to avenge for the trickery of his father and his death too .

So he used the Brahmastra on sleeping Pandava sons and killed the vansh .

He broke war rules .

He was caught and brought before Krishna who cursed him to wander aimlessly in the Kaliyuga carrying the sins of all on his shoulders and never to know peace . He also had the jewel that gave him immunity from sickness removed and gave him an everlasting wound .

This was what i read .

One more thing . Duryodhan was a rebel even in thoughts and pretty progressive . He pooh poohed the caste system . It was one of the attractions in his friendship with Ashwathama .

Thanks KoolSadhu..

I agree Duryodhan was a rebel...I wonder why he had so much hatred towards the pandavas? ..i knw shakuni fueled his anger but then otherwise duryodhan was intelligent so how did he not see that his mama shakuni was fueling his anger?

agreed he wanted the throne for himself but why not give five towns to pandavs and rule hastinapur happily?

how can such a intelligent talented man not see through his shakuni mama?

Awesome post Koolsadhu, you covered it all :)

Ashwatthama was hyper at Duryodhan when he taunted Drona as he was unable to capture Yudhi. This ended only after his father was killed. And Ashwatthama was neutral even after Dushasana was killed. He even asked Dury to forget everything and develop friendship with the pandavas and became vengeful only after his father was decreased.

it was not inability to see through his mama ...he AGREED with him . Till the end he felt he had more birthright than Pandavas who were not of Kuru blood .

Ashwathama also stopped the fight between Duryodhan and Bhima in the arena where the display of skills was held for the crowd . Duryodhan and Bhim hated each other so much that a skill display turned into an uncontrollable real fight and ultimately Ashwathama got in the arena and seperated them . Kripacharya was the referee .

Creative liberty at its best😕
Ashvattama was worried about Arjun's importance in Drona's life but he also knew how much his father loved him. He was always there siding his father even against Duryodhan,
Ashvathama find have a better affinity with Duryodhan than the Pandavas but he did not consider the Pandavas as his enemy.

He just thought that Duryodhan had a right to the throne.

His failing quality was his cowardice in the end of kurushetra war. He decided to annihilate the pandavas in the night ( war after sun down was against rules) . He would kill other yodhas in their sleep when thy were without weapons and would proceed to kill the give pandavas sons without remorse.

Not just this, after dawn, Ashvathama does realize that has committed great sin but when the pandavas come in search of him to vyasa's ashram where he has fled, his revenge again overshadows his remorse. Ashvathama uses brahmastra which is countered by Arjun with his own..

Vyasa's stops this and asks Arjun and Ashvathama to retrieve the Astra back. Ashvathama who did not know to take back the asthma ( Drona did not teach him that), does the next worst thing. He redirects the Astra to uttara's womb where the heir to the pandavas is growing,, this act, so devoid of any compassion was the one that earned him the curse from lord Krishna.

Ashvathama was a proud warrior and Brahmin who let revenge overshadow ever other emotion and righteousness he had.. His tactic on the last day of war was highly questionable and his lack of compassion led to his downfall.

Duryodhan's intelligence is overrated😉 He was more the mean and street smart type😊

He certainly was a good warrior. He had progressive views ( which suited him a lot in getting people of caliber to support him in all his endeavors).

Duryodhan's hatred of the pandavas started early and remained throughout. He was a manifestation of his father's insecurities combined with the power that his father did not have.

Duryodhan had nothing that put a check to his free run.. He was left to do whatever he wished by his loving dad who he could manipulate in a minute. Unchecked power at so young an age, no responsibility, very little compassion led to Duryodhan being the person he was..

Hello. I am Suvika and this is my first post in this Mahabharat forum. I started watching this Mahabharat mainly for my kids. Both of them showed interest but could not understand the language. And I became their translator.
Initially I was a little skeptical because as far as I knew, Mahabharat was all about characters that were grey. There was no black or white. Everyone had both good and bad qualities in them. So I wondered how I should explain the grey characters to an 8 year old whose first question when he watches a movie is, "Is he the good guy or a bad guy?"

Once I started watching, I realized that I needn't have feared. I do not know which version of Mahabharat the creative team here is following but there is nothing grey here. All Pandavas and everyone connected to them and smiled at them are good. All Kauravas and everyone connected to them are bad. Everything simple and sorted out I must say! 😆

The first inkling I had of that was with the introduction of Kauravas with their almost psychopathic behavior with the fishermen. And then later on was when King Pandu died. There was no mention of Dritarashtra, his reaction or his pain. It was like his brother's death had not touched him at all. Then it was finally confirmed when I saw Ashwatthama this week. I didn't know Dronacharya wanted his son to be a king. Never heard of that version. And I most certainly didn't know that Ashwatthama was so jealous of the Pandavas that he could grin with triumph when Bheem struggled to get out of the mire.

Well, accuracy aside, my job as a translator has certainly been made easy. 😆
