God role kills career?

God role kills career?
Nitish Bharadwaj as Krishna
Remember the late 80s, when shows like Mahabharat and Ramayan took over the small screen - with fans worshipping the TV screen each time Ram appeared or when Krishna motivated Arjun in the battlefield? It is no secret that actors playing divine characters usually attain a 'God-like' status for viewers. However, when these actors let go off their on-screen divinity and go for mortal roles, the same viewers find it difficult to embrace their devis and devtas' lesser, commonplace avatars. We speak to actors and industry people to understand why the on-screen God stereotype remains immortal and whether playing a divine character is a career-killing move.

People see you as god Swapnil Joshi, who played Krishna in the TV series Shri Krishna, agrees that people stereotype you, and often go too far. He'd told us earlier, "It was a different era when I played Krishna. People would consider your character to be God. I was all of 16 at that time, and people would come and touch my feet. In fact, some even brought their sick relatives to me and asked me to cure them. Many people who played mythological characters could not come out of that image. But I knew that somewhere I was only a medium for them to visualize Krishna."
Arun Govil, who is still revered as Ram by people, says, "The Ramayan I was a part of, was quite well-made. The shows at that time had high production values. Of course, as an actor, each one of us contributed, but it turned out to be quite good. People still remember me as Ram. Even now they come and touch my feet. I was recently in Jaipur and two people came and asked me, 'Are you the guy who played Ram in Ramayan?' and when I replied in the affirmative, they touched my feet. Somehow, my image as Ram is etched in people's minds. I think the benchmark set by Ram was so high that the other things which I did after that failed to surpass it. It's because the image of Ram is so strong that I wasn't offered many good roles or negative roles after the show. After that, I realised that it is of no use waiting for roles and I decided to step away. Now I am associated with social groups and am happy."

Blame the actor, not the role? While some people feel that it's the role that doesn't allow you to come out of the iconic image, others feel that it's the decisions of an actor that determine the course of their career. Nitish Bharadwaj, who played Krishna in Mahabharat, says, "When we did those shows, most of us were newcomers. Except for Mukesh (Khanna) and Puneet (Issar), all of us were new. We gave our sweat and blood to our characters and didn't care about the monetary aspects. Money and fame came as a result of our hard work. The serial became a landmark and our careers also got a big boost. While doing Mahabharat, I did Sangeet with Madhuri Dixit and Nache Nagin Gali Gali with Meenakshi Seshadri which did well. I don't feel I got typecast as Krishna, however, I would like to add that when people love you in a particular part, that role somewhere becomes your identity. In my view, we are all what we are because of our decisions. The impact of each person's decision is only known after a point of time. I was doing good films, but my own errors impacted my career. It was in 1992, just after Mahabharat, that I moved to UK. In 1996, contesting elections was another mistake. These two decisions were responsible for me not getting enough roles. Shah Rukh, Govinda, Akshay Kumar and Salman are all my contemporaries and they are quite popular in films. I lost focus and made errors but now I have decided only to focus on films - be it acting or directing them,"

Prem Sagar, creative director of the first Ramayan, who is presently involved with Jai Jai Jai Bajrangbali, echoes, "It all depends on the actor and the kind of roles he chooses. Swapnil Joshi has made a name for himself in Marathi cinema and his recent film has proved be the highest grosser in Marathi cinema. He reinvented himself after that role and is quite popular. I feel that an actor has to exercise caution in choosing the roles he does after playing the character."

Fresh faces preferred over popular ones If on-screen Gods can't be accepted in any other roles, then known faces can't be accepted as Gods either. TV serial makers preferred to cast relatively new people for such shows, so that they would look believable on screen. "The actors who were a part of such shows were new and had no particular image of their own. If you rope in daily soap actors, people aren't able to identify with them since they have seen them in a different character. Even if a known face plays a pious character, people would not be able to relate to her. Taking new people is a creative call," opines Sagar.

Mahabharat will prove to be a triumph: Ashutosh Gowariker

One of Bollywood's most established and renowned filmmaker - Ashutosh Gowarikar has recently joined the fan club of Star Plus' Mahabharat. Ashutosh who is known for his hit films like Lagaan and Jodha Akbar has been enthusiastically following Swastik Productions'Mahabharat and seems to be all praises for this mega show.

Ashutosh penned down a special note to the makers of Mahabharat exclaiming his views on the epic that's been on air, "Creatively, the biggest challenge for Star's Mahabharat is to match up with B.R. Chopra saab's Mahabharat. But that is inevitable. That series back in the 80's really influenced us, with regards to every aspect, be it casting, sets, dialogues and everything else that an epic needs. And I may add here, that I've been watching the series so far and I feel that this one too might just match up with the previous one.

Firstly, the concepts about mythology and the epic are very well presented, thanks to Devdutt Pattanaik once again. And I find the dialogues by Mihir Buta to be a fine blend of keeping the essence of Sanskrit but making it palatable to audiences today. What I like most is that Star, for the first time, (I may stand corrected) has put all their money on content. And what better content to have than the great epic!

It is very well executed. The sets are grandiose. The costumes are beautifully designed. And the property created is exquisite. I loved the embellishments spread out across all the scenes and locations - especially the use of ducks in the shots of Krishna, and many more.

All the actors have been cast well - a couple of names that immediately come to mind areSayantani as Satyavati and Samir Dharmadhikari as Shantanu, who played their parts very well. And of course, Bheeshma - I would love to see how this actor plays the older Bheeshma in the later part of the epic.

I think this Mahabharat will prove to be a triumph for its Producers, Directors and STAR and this might just become a reference point for this generation. Sure, these are the first few episodes, and by the looks of it, this level of quality is going to be maintained - at least I hope it is going to be. After all, it's Star, and they always know what they are doing!"- Ashutosh Gowariker.

Ashutosh's note has been a great source of motivation for the entire team that has been working tirelessly on this epic project. The effort of the cast and crew is to ensure that the audience is not only visually satisfied but also largely educated.

Good. I wish Mr. Ashutosh Gowarikar was himself involved in making MB. He is highly skilled and experienced in making good period movies, particularly Lagaan and Jodhaa Akbar.

Comparisons with Nitish Bharadwaj are most welcome: Saurabh Raaj Jain

Saurabh Raaj Jain on playing Krishna andVishnu at the same time

Saurabh Raaj Jain is essaying the role of Lord Vishnu ( Devon Ke Dev Mahadev) and Lord Krishna (Mahabharat) at the same time. Ask him how he juggles both the roles and he says, "While I had signed Mahabharat first, it took time for it to get started. In the meantime, I took up the role of Vishnu in Devon Ke Dev Mahadev."

Both the characters are very different even if Krishna is an avatar of Vishnu, reveals Saurabh. "While playing Vishnu, I can't move. I have to portray the calendar image of the God, so I can only show my expressions. Krishna, being the human form, allows me to do a lot with the character," he notes.

While Krishna is traditionally portrayed as dark-skinned in mythological shows, Saurabh is shown to be comparatively fairer. He says, "Yes, Krishna was dark in complexion, but this is something the creative team has decided to take liberty with."

Tell him that many people do not understand why Krishna is narratingMahabharat on the show at a time when he did not even exist and he says, "He isn't telling the story, but is only present in divine form as God. He interprets each episode and action in the story and relates it to daily life."
Jain tells us that he was a big fan of Nitish Bharadwaj, who played Krishna in BR Chopra'sMahabharat, and has no issues with comparisons. He says, "There was Gita Gyaan in the earlierMahabharat during the war. Our show talks about gyaan with Krishna explaining the facts that led to the war."

A Delhi boy, Saurabh would earlier speak Hindi with a Punjabi accent and had to read a lot of books to get his diction right.

One of the most popular Indian epic stories, the Mahabharata is considered the longest Sanskrit epic of the world. It tells the story of the Kuru clan, and the fight between dynasties to claim throne of Hastinapura. While the show's based on the saga, running currently on television, may not have charmed everyone with its story telling finesse or poor CG; but its makers surely know how to get people interested.

They have just put up a new augmented reality app for iOS and Android devices, which let's you "strike a pose with your favourite Mahabharat weapons and jewellery". Also, it lets you understand and decode the story with a "self-updating family tree" that explains the complex relationships as depicted in the epic. Interestingly the characters are unlocked based on their appearance on the show.

Apart from quizzes, videos, shlokas, and image galleries, you get to download music from the show too. I for one am not a fan of the show, but the story sure is intriguing. Try giving it a whirl, and let us know if it's worth your time in the comments below.

Acting is not age specific: Shafaq Naaz
Shafaq-naaz
Actress Shafaq Naaz currently playing Kunti in serial Mahabharata is just 20 years old, we asked the actress was it an easy task to play the character that commands utmost maturity on screen?

"Believe me I just went and read the script. While shooting for the serial, never has this thought came to me that I am playing a character of mother of five son! I think that sense of maturity has always been there in me. Also feel acting is not age specific,it is how well you can justify the character."

Talking about her foray in acting, the actress says it was not planned, "I used to take dance classes in Saroj Khan's dancing institute when she saw me first. She really liked my expressions and told my parents ki isko Mumbai lekar aao yeh bahut aage jayegi. After finishing my twelfth exams I went to Mumbai and within 5 months I got the serial Bidaai. Otherwise I was aiming for doctor after giving twelfth exams" she says.

The actress says she wants to do a film after serial Mahabharata. "If I get a chance I would like to do a film after Mahabharata." On being asked any actor that she dreams to work with? She says, "I would love to work with Ranbir. I had a serious crush on him after movie Saanwariyan that continued for 3-4 months. Par ab kuch aisa nahi hai" she clears.
