Kṛṣṇa was called Vārṣṇeya often because Vṛṣṇi was his great-great-grandfather. An etymology from MahāViṣṇu isn't logical or necessary.

Cekitāna is called Vārṣṇeya, but the text never explains how he was descended from Vṛṣṇi. The text of Harivaṃśa's genealogical section is damaged and incomplete. A couple of Purāṇas say that one of the five Kekaya brothers was named Cekitāna, but this is contradicted by Droṇaparvan 9.50-52, where Cekitāna is distinct from the five Kekaya brothers. Cekitāna is never identified as Dhṛṣṭaketu's son in Mahābhārata. Dhṛṣṭaketu and his father Śiśupāla are not called Vārṣṇeya, although Śrutaśravas being Vārṣṇeyī would have allowed her son and grandson to be called Vārṣṇeyya (with a yya, not ya).

Vārṣṇeya was also the name of Nala's chariot-driver, entrusted by Damayantī with her children. The name Vārṣṇeya also appears in a list of mountain people who brought tribute to Yudhiṣṭhira's Rājasūya and were turned away from the door.

Can you name two other characters who are called Vārṣṇeya? And ...

Arjuna, introducing Yudhiṣṭhira to Virāṭa, uses the word yajñaśīla in a list of noble habits. The word is also used to describe earlier kings like Kuru and Avikṣit. However, it isn't their name.

Who was the character known by the name Yajñaśīla?
