Thank you so much for your comments I love reading them. I'm sorry I could not reply to them I was a bit short on time but they are very important to me. Here is the next part I hope you like it please like and comment. Madhu's character is probably a bit hard to love here but I like writing flawed characters. Anyway she will become more likable soon 😆
Part 5
Madhu was pacing in her room, thinking hard about what she should do to stop her wedding. She was unable to concentrate because of Trishna, who was looking for something in her room and making a loud noise. Trishna who was dressed in an elegant white saree shut the drawer to the dressing table with irritation.
"What are you doing Trishna?" asked Madhu annoyed.
"What's your problem?" Trishna asked with anger.
"My problem? You are my problem. What are you looking for in my room?" Madhu questioned her crossly.
"I am looking for my earrings."
"Why will your earrings be in my room?"
"I always find my lost things in your room."
"What? What are you trying to say?" Madhu asked surprised. "Do I hide your things? Am I thief?"
"Well what else? You always hide my things," Trishna taunted her.
"And why would I do that?"
"You love irritating me Madhu because you are jealous of me!" Trishna said meanly.
Her words were like salt on wound for Madhu.
"Shut up!" Madhu snapped.
"The truth is always bitter Madhu," Trishna said with a laugh. "What do you think Madhu that I don't know anything? Do you really think I don't know that you have always spoiled things for me?"
Madhu turned away from her unable to see her in the eyes while Trishna looked straight at her.
"When we were kids you used to steal my toys and break them. At school you used to hide my assignments. Do you remember the prom at our college? You burned my dress with the iron and when I still became prom queen you broke my crown. I know it was no accident."
Madhu turned to look at Trishna with shock. How did she know all that?
"Then on father's day when I made a cake for dad who put salt in it Madhu? When I got mom a shawl with my first salary who cut it with scissors?" Trishna asked furiously. "I was you sister Madhu but you always treated me worse than an enemy!"
Trishna raised her voice with anger and Madhu fell silent.
"Oh so you knew?" Madhu asked wickedly. "Then why didn't you tell mom dad?"
"Because I don't like playing victim like you. I don't like complaining about every single thing to my parents."
"Well I am not at all ashamed of what I did Trishna because you deserved it," Madhu said with venom. "You remember everything I did but do you remember what you did? You always put me down Trishna. You never treated me like a sister. You always treated me as an inferior."
Now it was Trishna's time to fall silent. She folded her arms and looked away.
"Even I remember my first day at college when your friends made fun of my appearance. And what did you do Trishna? Instead of telling them to shut up you stood quiet feeling insulted that a behenji like me was your sister. Instead of consoling me you scolded me for the way I dressed. Did you ever think how I felt?" Madhu said and there was a short pause. "You are a horrible person. Your beauty is only skin deep."
"At least I am not too faced like you," Trishna taunted.
"I just hate you Trishna. I hate you!"
Just then Madhu saw Padmini coming inside her room but Trishna who had her back to the door was unaware of this. She unfolded her arms and looked straight at Madhu with anger.
"Do you think I love you? No Madhu I hate you. I wish you were never my sister. You are such a witch! I am so glad you are going away from this house forever and I hope you never come back here-"
"Trishna!" Padmini shouted walking over to her and Trishna fell silent as she saw her mother. "You should be ashamed of yourself. It's Madhu's last day in this house and still you are fighting with her. You should have spared her at least today."
"Mom you don't know she-"
"Enough! I won't listen to a word now. Apologize to her," Padmini said sternly while Madhu smirked at Trishna.
"What?" Trishna asked with disbelief.
"Say sorry!"
"Never!" Trishna yelled and left the room.
"Trishna!" Padmini called but she did not stop. She then turned to Madhu and placed and arm around her. "Don't be upset Madhu. You know her nature. She is always like that. You cheer up it's your big day today."
Padmini beamed at Madhu, who smiled back at her mother.
"I will be back in a while to take you downstairs," she said and walked away.
Madhu walked over to her dressing table and looked at her reflection in the mirror. She did not want to marry Mukund. She already had a boring life and she did not want to spend the rest of her life the same way with an uninteresting person like Mukund. She always wanted one excuse to not marry him and now she got that excuse in the form of RK's proposal. She thought about RK who was everyone's crush at college and smiled. He is the kind of person she wants to spend her life with. She would do anything to unite with him. Madhu thought about all the options she had and finally made her mind up. She nodded to her reflection in the mirror and opened her drawer. She took a notepad and pen out and began writing quickly. She tore the note out and left it on the dressing table under a perfume bottle. Madhu then rushed to her bedroom door and bolted it. She reached her wardrobe and took out a light blue party dress with silver embroidery.
A few minutes later, Madhu placed her bridal dress on her bed with her jewellery on top of it. She was now dressed in the blue dress and she quickly placed the scarf on her head while pulling it down a bit to veil her face. She unbolted her door and opened it.
Madhu was walking fast along the deserted corridor on the second floor. She saw a few girls standing at a pillar chatting away. She quickly rushed past them and headed towards the stairs where she found more guests. Luckily nobody stopped her although they did look at her curiously.
Once downstairs, she bumped into none other than her mother.
"Be careful," Padmini said frowning as she looked at the veiled woman in front of her. "Who are you?"
"Madhu's friend," Madhu said in a high pitched voice hoping that her mother would not recognise her.
"Why are you hiding your face?" Padmini asked curiously.
"I ... er ... I had an allergic reaction to a cream so my face is irritated," Madhu said thinking fast.
"Oh okay," Padmini said when she noticed something. "Madhu has a dress like this too by the way."
"Padmini," someone called and Padmini got distracted and turned to look.
Madhu saw Radha coming over to her mother and got the opportunity to sneak away. On the way out she stopped for a moment and looked back to see the hall full of guests. She looked at her mother and then her father, who were so happy. Was she doing the right thing to run away from her wedding like this? And that too for a coward like RK. Should she go back? She then looked at Trishna, who appeared to be arguing with Mukund's mother, Mrs Dixit. Madhu's eyes then fell on Mukund, who was smiling shyly as his friends teased him. No she cannot go back. She cannot marry him. Madhu then turned her back on them all and walked off.
After a while, Padmini entered Madhu's room to find it empty. She spotted the bridal dress and jewellery on the bed and was confused.
"Madhu," she called and walked over to the bathroom and knocked. "Madhu are you inside?"
She opened the door to find the bathroom empty too. Where had Madhu gone? Padmini became worried as she walked over to the dressing table. She then noticed the letter and picked it up.
Dear mom and dad
Today I am for the first time going to hurt you both badly but believe me I am helpless. I have always done whatever you both wanted not just to make you both happy but to be in you good books and become your favourite daughter. However, today I cannot do what you both want because it's about my whole life. I cannot pretend to be the ideal daughter anymore. To make you both happy I cannot ruin my life by marrying someone like Mukund. RK and I both love each other so I am leaving. I hope you will forgive this first and last mistake of mine.
Your Madhu
As Padmini read the note, she was shocked beyond words. How could Madhu do this? She looked at the note again. It was definitely Madhu's handwriting. She never expected this from Madhu. She only wanted to be in their good books? Had she really left today? She remembered the veiled girl she met downstairs. Was that Madhu? Padmini held her head in her hands. How could all this just happen out of the blue?
At that point Trishna entered the room.
"I didn't want to come here but Mukund's mother is creating some drama about the decorations. Mom will you come and sort her," Trishna's voice trailed off as she looked at the bridal dress and her mother. "What happened now?"
She took the note from her mother and read it while Padmini stood like a statue.
"Wow," Trishna said amazed. "I don't believe this. Madhu took such a bold step. And RK I never thought he would fall for Madhu."
Trishna could not help but admire her move. Now the fun would begin, she thought. The boring wedding would get interesting with this twist and Madhu would no longer be everyone's favourite.
Padmini then looked at Trishna.
"I'll go and tell dad then that Madhu has runaway," Trishna said happily.
"Only you can save our honour now," Padmini said full of emotion.
"What?" Trishna asked shocked.
"You will have to marry Mukund."
"What? No way!"
"Trishna-"
"Mom how can you even think of this?"
Trishna was now irked by Madhu's step.
"We don't have any other option. If everyone finds out that our daughter has runaway from her wedding then it will ruin our reputation," Padmini now said in a stern voice. "Look you will have to do this marriage."
"No!"
"If you do this marriage you can do modelling," Padmini made an offer. "I will support you."
Trishna then fell silent at the offer. Padmini lifted the bridal dress and handed it to her.
"Go and wear this," she said.
Soon, Trishna was sitting at the dressing table in Madhu's wedding dress, lost in thought while Padmini helped her wear the jewellery. Padmini then lifted the dupatta and covered Trishna's face with it.
"Have you thought what will happen when everyone will find out later?" Trishna asked.
"We will think about that later. Now you will pretend to be Madhu and marry Mukund," Padmini told her.
"But mom-"
"I'll just be back in a minute. Stay here Trishna," Padmini said firmly and left.
Trishna lifted her veil and jumped up.
"If Madhu will not marry Mukund then how can you even think that I will marry him mom?" Trishna asked aloud. Yes she wanted to do modelling but not at this expense. She would rather give up her dreams than marry a nobody. But Trishna had already decided what she was going to do now. "I will become an actress and I will not get married either."
Trishna removed the sheets from the bed and some clothes from Madhu's wardrobe and began tying their ends like a rope. She then opened the window and went out in the small balcony. She tied one end of her long rope to the railing and threw the other end down. She recalled her conversation with RK and how he had strictly told her not to leave home. Trishna decided to go against his advice because she could not marry at this stage on any condition. She could perhaps go down and refuse openly but then her parents would probably never give her the permission to pursue her dreams. It was the right moment to leave now because nobody could entirely blame her. Madhu was at fault because she eloped from her wedding and then her mother was wrong by forcing her to take Madhu's place.
"Sorry mom dad but you left me with no other option," Trishna said and she smiled as she looked down at the back garden.
RK was lying down on the couch in the hall of his mansion all alone reading a magazine. Madhu entered the dimly lit hall and walked over to him. He spotted her and jumped up.
"What are you doing here?" He asked stunned. "It's your wedding today!"
"You wanted a chance didn't you?" Madhu asked with a smile. "Today I have come here to give you that chance."
