De-centralisation of a central character

Just though would do an analysis on what, why and how of Sultan, a character introduced with a lot of pomp and then relegated to the current level. Forgive me if it is a bit too long.

Stage 1 : The golden hearted DON

So, after the unwedding, when RK was at his cheap best, Sultan was introduced. Audience at that time were waiting for a new entry to counter RK and were really excited. But the first error done by the CVs was making him a gangster. On top of that they made him a weak gangster who needed the heroine to save his life, had to hide in a chawl etc. The chawl scenes firmly established him as a Chota Mota Goonda in audiences eyes.

Then you had a superstar to compare, who was already the heroines husband and was clearly in love with her though at that time behaving like a jerk. Further, the wife was also in love with him.

Compare apples with apples, dont give audience peanuts to compare with apples. In the previous shows where gangsters were successful, they had shown women from poor background, in dire circumstances falling for the gangsters. Not wives of rich, successful and handsome men who are in love with their wives.

Further, educated women from good families NEVER befriend gangsters.

I still remember, 15 years ago Dil Se movie was released and was a big flop. SKR had at that time said that Indian Audience are not matured enough to understand the movie.

Even after 15 years if that movie is still released it would be a big flop. Because it was not a question of maturity. A boy protecting his terrorist love at the cost of his family and country instantly repulsed the audience.

They just could not connect with the lead. Like in this case the audience just could not connect with Sultan or MBs friendship with him.

Stage 2: Bhai- Bhai

Then when the CVs realised that romantic track was out of the question, they introduced Bhai-Bhai track. Do you think an actress like Zareena Wahab would be taken for a 10 episode role of a loony and then to disappear. No, they had bigger plans but the audience again rejected the track vehemently. Please note that CVs dont wait for TRPs to decide whether the audience is appreciating the track or not. They have other assured channels of information.

Stage 3: Omni potent Villain

By that time the audience was so fed up and so irritated that they refused to accept him in that form also. Also, he was lusting after the wife of his younger brother. Even divine intervention could not have saved this track.

Stage 4: End of the game

So RK the majnu was again wrapped up and smart RK was reintroduced.

Audience the real catalyst, the decision maker

Yes all this has happened under audience pressure. Because you may say on a random tweet use the remote but you would do anything possible to prevent that from happening. And I again say audience is not stupid and no one should dare treat it like that. (Chk the SRK incident quoted above)

Blaming the audiences maturity level for not liking or rejecting a track is the easiest way out for any show/movie maker. Audience is not blind nor mentally retarded. There are some established societal norms, some moral values which audience adhere to.

And if something is shown which is in direct contrast to it, they simply refuse to watch it. Forget the talk of principles, if something is being shown that is downright boring then also they will not watch it.

With respect to TV, Entertaining means something that can be watched with the entire family, children and even grand children. In India mothers dont allow children to watch certain cartoon shows they find offensive and they would let their children watch saga of an abusive husband and wife. If RK had been perceived abusive, if his behaviour was so bad that it could affect the moral values of our society like lajja, maryada etc, you think the TRP audience would have allowed the show to be run even one day on the home television.

PS: pls comment only on the character and do not pin point any one

Shruti, this is one awesome post 👏 one of the best I've read in recent times..couldn't agree more with you..

the main reason why Sultan was rejected was that his character was never developed properly..how can they have antagonist against RK? bec. RK played the role of the hero & antagonist perfectly... we wud never like to watch RK as the typical hero...two, the CV's failed with the third angle thing bec. even if Madhu had 4 phera shadi & technically or legally, it was not complete, but phir bhi audience always perceived her as RK's wife...Bhai Bhai track was utter nonsense & so was Bhai blackmailing Madhu..so many loopholes, loads of illogical stuff which nobody will accept...Yeah, they cud have made it interesting (each and every track) in thousand and one ways but they did not đŸ€” or cud not ..i don't know..

As for RK's perceived "abusive" behavior, there was none..na physical abuse na mental abuse na emotional abuse...at least mujhe kahin nahi dikha...he broke her heart & took a revenge...we overreacted big time over it when the characters were cool abt it...I mean if Madhu was so much affected, she wouldn't have gone back to him.. we enjoyed the story bec. Madhu overpowered him...woh jhak maar ke Madhu ke peeche peeche aaya...Madhu didn't forgive him on her own or begged him to have her back so how was her self respect crushed? We women in general are more forgiving in nature & believe in giving second chances...Madhu & RK are perfect for each other..Period !

ETA male ego is a dominant characteristic of Indian men..and women generally don't raise a hue & cry over it..in normal cases..I'm not talking about extreme ones..

A very well written analysis Shruti! 👏

I agree completely with everything written.

I always saw Sultan as a poorly etched character. The day he entered the show he gave the impression of a psychopath yet he was still shown to be a self-proclaimed golden hearted gangster (which is quite unbelievable and contradictory on it's own) . CVs clearly made his entry similar in many ways with that of Balraj Singh Chaudhry's character who was a brilliantly written and flawlessly portrayed negative character. So, I had my hopes up which had a mighty fall when Sultan became clunkier in terms of character development and portrayal with each passing day.

There was no way a regular viewer with a sane mind can connect with such a character. The glaring flaws in his characterization cannot be ignored. Still adamant with their decision to make him a parallel lead against a phenomenal antihero like RK, CVs kept butchering the titular character of the show which even got worse for the show.

By giving him multiple story lines and avatars in a short span of time, the CVs actually butchered Sultan's character the most which already had little hope in the first place.

All in all, I will just say Sultan was an epic failure in every way! Cvs should now learn from their mistakes!

Excellent post Shruti đŸ‘đŸŒ.
You pin point each and every corner of the character introduced in the show as Sultan.

Why there was a need to introduce him as a gangster or don?😕

Bhai bhai track was utterly a nonsense track, why in the earth he has to be RK's half brotherđŸ˜Č

Bringing a famous artist as Sultan's mother for 10 episode is beyond me đŸ˜Č and where is she now? No one knows

CVs tried all the trial and error methods to accommodate the character with no success

Finally they tried the character as a villain, where they showed him to lust on his half brothers wife who used to be his friend for some time and also saved his life couple of times. 😳 Also he started blackmailing her, mishandling her which disgusted most of the viewers đŸ€ą

Either avatar of the character were not acceptable to the majority of viewers, and to continue with a show with success, viewers liking plays the most important role. 😳

Thanks again for excellent analysis of the character đŸ‘đŸŒ

Bhai was rejected coz his character lacked the necessary attributes required to make him seem real as well as a don. Instead they painted him a GHG. then tried to pair him up with MB, then made him use a woman to hide from enemies.

There have been many gangster movies and shows, but the dons there looked real and though they were bad, but they made an impact. That was missing here. The biggest blunder CV's made was the Bhai-Bhai track and then the don lusting and chasing MB. These no-logic wala tracks were a big turn off and then having to watch that man terrorizing and molesting a married woman was a big no-no and utterly disgusting.

Audiences aren't stupid ... they are smart, they are progressive, but there is a line of decency which no show should dare to cross. CV's did that here and they got back a TRP slap with love from the same audience.

And now corrective steps are being taken ... hopefully by next month our show will be back on track with our sensible leads back in their characters.

Amazing post Shruti! I agree completely! The point to be noted is that Bhai always needed someone else to make his character stand - that was the degree of weakness in his clunky life! Yes the audience, esp the Indian audience who are the main target audience do not watch shows which outright debase their value system without any reason and also kill them with boredom! TRPs are proof enough but as u rightly said the makers have more refined sources of feedback that direct their decisions! Bhai was set up for failure from the start itself. So I am not surprised...just exasperated to note it took them so long to get rid of the clunky criminal!

Awesome post!!
During the "golden heart" phase, this character was given so many crutches to invoke viewer sympathy that made it hilarious.

Crutch 1 - Gangster who doesn't deal drugs. (How noble of him..!! Let's forget about the necks he twists. This guy is a pargon of virtue!!)

Crutch 2 - A widower with a young son.( i have fond remembrance of that musical lighter, which went missing in bhai's musical chair of falling in and out of love!)

Crutch 3 - A young son who is specially abled..😭 (If a young motherless son wasn't enough to accomplish the deed, a young motherless son who is specially abled, would definitely pull the heartstrings of TRP audience...Genius isn't it..?😉)

Crutch 4 - Suddenly the man who baited his son, became the man who makes "bhindi pies' for him and takes him on univited picnics to a strangers place..!!

Crutch 5 - Then we had to listen to his sob story narrated to Padmini. How his mother was murdered, he was kidnapped and took up arms of course. He WAS NOT responsible for his choices!!!

Crutch 6 - Man with no surname (This one still baffles me though..Why the heck did he not have Rashid's surname..?)😕

Crutch 7 - He suddenly became "the best friend' a girl could have. and began another string of "I'd be with you no matter what you say" It's another issue entirely that the girl failed to appreciated the golden hearted help and went ahead to marry her love..!!😆

Crutch 8 - Later came the epic "Son who had been abandoned at birth"!

Crutch 9 - Now how can we leave a loony mother behind...? who must be avenged from the other son of the man who allegedly betrayed his mother!!đŸ€Ș

Crutch 10 - Okay, in all the bhai's supposed crutches, I forgot the biggest of them all..The deliberate deterioration of RK's character and repeated bhashans of Padmini comparing RK to a "Rakshas' and Bhai to an "angel of mercy"..!!😛

Honestly. I can't remember any other character on TV which had been pushed at viewers with so many sympathy evoking factors but still managed to evoke only disgust..!!😆
Thankfully viewers were intelligent enough to see through such transparant and obvious manipulations and rejected the tracks weaved around this character one by one, leaving no other means to the channel and PH other than ending this abysmal track!!😊
