I am not romantic enough to like Dil se. A boy not even considering his family once and committing suicide is not done for me. His family was shown arrested in the end. And if he had informed the police the entire group of terrorists along with the girl could have been caught.

My POV sorry.

Shruti, this is one awesome post 👏 one of the best I've read in recent times..couldn't agree more with you..

the main reason why Sultan was rejected was that his character was never developed properly..how can they have antagonist against RK? bec. RK played the role of the hero & antagonist perfectly... we wud never like to watch RK as the typical hero...two, the CV's failed with the third angle thing bec. even if Madhu had 4 phera shadi & technically or legally, it was not complete, but phir bhi audience always perceived her as RK's wife...Bhai Bhai track was utter nonsense & so was Bhai blackmailing Madhu..so many loopholes, loads of illogical stuff which nobody will accept...Yeah, they cud have made it interesting (each and every track) in thousand and one ways but they did not 🤔 or cud not ..i don't know..

As for RK's perceived "abusive" behavior, there was none..na physical abuse na mental abuse na emotional abuse...at least mujhe kahin nahi dikha...he broke her heart & took a revenge...we overreacted big time over it when the characters were cool abt it...I mean if Madhu was so much affected, she wouldn't have gone back to him.. we enjoyed the story bec. Madhu overpowered him...woh jhak maar ke Madhu ke peeche peeche aaya...Madhu didn't forgive him on her own or begged him to have her back so how was her self respect crushed? We women in general are more forgiving in nature & believe in giving second chances...Madhu & RK are perfect for each other..Period !

ETA male ego is a dominant characteristic of Indian men..and women generally don't raise a hue & cry over it..in normal cases..I'm not talking about extreme ones..

Fully agree. Once they had created an enigmatic character like RK all other antagonists were simply going to fall flat.

And regards, the lines in bold that is the biggest mystery to date for me.

A very well written analysis Shruti! 👏

I agree completely with everything written.

I always saw Sultan as a poorly etched character. The day he entered the show he gave the impression of a psychopath yet he was still shown to be a self-proclaimed golden hearted gangster (which is quite unbelievable and contradictory on it's own) . CVs clearly made his entry similar in many ways with that of Balraj Singh Chaudhry's character who was a brilliantly written and flawlessly portrayed negative character. So, I had my hopes up which had a mighty fall when Sultan became clunkier in terms of character development and portrayal with each passing day.

There was no way a regular viewer with a sane mind can connect with such a character. The glaring flaws in his characterization cannot be ignored. Still adamant with their decision to make him a parallel lead against a phenomenal antihero like RK, CVs kept butchering the titular character of the show which even got worse for the show.

By giving him multiple story lines and avatars in a short span of time, the CVs actually butchered Sultan's character the most which already had little hope in the first place.

All in all, I will just say Sultan was an epic failure in every way! Cvs should now learn from their mistakes!

Truly said. You cannot make a road full of loop holes and expect to take audience for a joyride. And yes he was shown a psychopath from day one. No normal person treats his child like that. That master stroke by the CVs created immediate dislike in the brains of the audience which nothing could remove.

Sorry to all If I have hurt feelings by quoting Dil se. It was an article I had read at the time of its release which I just quoted because here also audience immaturity and lack of sense is being blamed for end of Sultan.

You pin point each and every corner of the character introduced in the show as Sultan.

Why there was a need to introduce him as a gangster or don?😕

Bhai bhai track was utterly a nonsense track, why in the earth he has to be RK's half brother😲

Bringing a famous artist as Sultan's mother for 10 episode is beyond me 😲 and where is she now? No one knows

CVs tried all the trial and error methods to accommodate the character with no success

Finally they tried the character as a villain, where they showed him to lust on his half brothers wife who used to be his friend for some time and also saved his life couple of times. 😳 Also he started blackmailing her, mishandling her which disgusted most of the viewers 🤢

Either avatar of the character were not acceptable to the majority of viewers, and to continue with a show with success, viewers liking plays the most important role. 😳

Thanks again for excellent analysis of the character 👍🏼

Excellent points. As regards the lines in Bold what was the desperate need to accommodate the character that so many trial runs were given?

During the "golden heart" phase, this character was given so many crutches to invoke viewer sympathy that made it hilarious.

Crutch 1 - Gangster who doesn't deal drugs. (How noble of him..!! Let's forget about the necks he twists. This guy is a pargon of virtue!!)

Crutch 2 - A widower with a young son.( i have fond remembrance of that musical lighter, which went missing in bhai's musical chair of falling in and out of love!)

Crutch 3 - A young son who is specially abled..😭 (If a young motherless son wasn't enough to accomplish the deed, a young motherless son who is specially abled, would definitely pull the heartstrings of TRP audience...Genius isn't it..?😉)

Crutch 4 - Suddenly the man who baited his son, became the man who makes "bhindi pies' for him and takes him on univited picnics to a strangers place..!!

Crutch 5 - Then we had to listen to his sob story narrated to Padmini. How his mother was murdered, he was kidnapped and took up arms of course. He WAS NOT responsible for his choices!!!

Crutch 6 - Man with no surname (This one still baffles me though..Why the heck did he not have Rashid's surname..?)😕

Crutch 7 - He suddenly became "the best friend' a girl could have. and began another string of "I'd be with you no matter what you say" It's another issue entirely that the girl failed to appreciated the golden hearted help and went ahead to marry her love..!!😆

Crutch 8 - Later came the epic "Son who had been abandoned at birth"!

Crutch 9 - Now how can we leave a loony mother behind...? who must be avenged from the other son of the man who allegedly betrayed his mother!!🤪

Crutch 10 - Okay, in all the bhai's supposed crutches, I forgot the biggest of them all..The deliberate deterioration of RK's character and repeated bhashans of Padmini comparing RK to a "Rakshas' and Bhai to an "angel of mercy"..!!😛

Honestly. I can't remember any other character on TV which had been pushed at viewers with so many sympathy evoking factors but still managed to evoke only disgust..!!😆
Thankfully viewers were intelligent enough to see through such transparant and obvious manipulations and rejected the tracks weaved around this character one by one, leaving no other means to the channel and PH other than ending this abysmal track!!😊

You know Bhai remindes me of ancient hindi movies: widow mother, invalid sister, blind brother - our very own Dukh ki Dukaan. 😆

Amazing and excellent review. I agree word by word. Introducing him as a petty Gangster and righteous heroine who fought a Superstar for an inadvertent accident protecting him was absurd. Yes rich women of Madhu;s stature though estranged( she was still Superstar's wife albeit back to her lower middle class background). do not befriend anti social elements. There was no Robin hood tale either. That pairing was awkward even to imagine. With a strong character like R.K a parallel lead has a marginal choice to win. Had it been a powerful industrialist or anybody from film world who saved Madhu instead of getting saved that track would have been tolerating. And R.K was never perceived as an abuser instead a dark character who was betrayed in life. And all his excesses were excused. He had his own set of values though. Had a platonic relationship with his wife while he hated/loved her. Respected his mother in his own way by tolerating his step family. This made him acceptable for audience.

After building up a character and a beautiful love story for months with the most convincing pair you cannot suddenly decide to change the lead. It is not that from this day Sultan is the central character and you take it or leave it. And deliberate tampering of the lead to accommodate Sultan did not help. This is not the way to bring down the much admired lead for a substandard character to make him accepted. Audience simply left. Again the same blunder with BhaI BHAI TRACK. The mere thought of a lowly gangster might be a brother of Superstar was a put off. And after failed third angle nobody would like him to see in Madhu's life. The whole thing appeared contrived. It was expected R.K to disprove the claim at least Bhai was not thAT lost baby. If they wanted Mohan's past as the next track( not a bad idea) a new entry should have been brought. And every claim was accepted on face value. And Zarina's characterization insulted audience's intelligence. Wonder how a senior actor could be projected in this worst way. Biggest blunder is Bhai's entry into R.K mansion and suggested third angle with promos and montage. This made the show sleazy. Everything from law and order to family values and sanctity of marriage was made a mockery forcing some of us to file complaints. You are right . Anything against established moral values and logic defying will be rejected. I am still at dark what made them to do this their show. I believe success made them complacent and arrogant in assuming whatever thrown would be accepted for brand value.

You have most beautifully explained each blunder and audience's consequent feelings👏👏

Charu when the unwedding happened I was on a break from the show due to personal work. when I came back R.K was already confused and regretting it. So it did not have the same shock and overreaction as I watched it retrospective. In his own words Madhu destroyed him in without doing anything. But to be honest that stupid twist brought out another shade of his character and jelled with his personality.and gave us best episodes like drunken one. That episode brought out the status of their relationship. He guilty of a grave mistake with egoist of accepting it and she who won't tolerate his distress. She never compromised with her self respect. he took her back in his life and she brought out a public proposal and apology etc. Yes.period.
