PART 4
Madhu sat outside the little village office, confused and befuddled. One moment , she was playing itti danda with her friends Mukund and Rajiv ( she liked playing with the boys-they were much more fun than the prissy girls) and the next moment she was being told that her uncle had stormed into her house and was forcing Trishna to get married to his son. She had run home as fast as she could and now she was married. Married
FLASHBACK
"No!" Padmini had screamed after Rishabh had made his astounding statement
He had turned towards her, the grimness around his mouth betraying his inner tension but had said calmly "I mean no harm Madam, I…" he was cut off by Padmini who strode towards him and jabbed her finger into his chest, looking half unhinged by the events taking place
"We know nothing about you. Do you imagine I would give my daughter to a man I know nothing about? For all I know you could be a criminal!" she said
At that his lips twitched. He said wryly" Mrs Chaudhary, my name is Rishabh Kundra, 23 yrs old and at present am a struggling actor. I intend you or your family no harm, but would like to help you if you will let me"
"She's 16 yrs old!" Padmini screamed at him helplessly. His face darkened at the accusing look in her eyes
"Rishabh Kundra has been told many times that he is and is a self-proclaimed kameena. But my kameenapan doesn't extend to eyeing a child of 16 in that way madam. Your daughter is to me nothing more than a school girl who will be raped and abused if you don't take a decision right now. Once our marriage takes place and I transfer the property to your daughter's name, you or your family will never have to set eyes on me again, I promise" he said tightly
Padmini stepped back at that and looked at him for a moment. She could see Balraj Chaudhary and his gang behind her waiting to seize her home and ruin her daughters. Trishna was slinking away, half afraid that she would be called on to take Madhu's place. Slowly Padmini turned to the subject of discussion
" Madhu?" she asked, her voice thick with tears
Madhu stared at her mother for a minute. Jumbled fragments of thoughts jostled together in her mind. She had wanted to become a teacher, Mukund had cheated in the game today, her father giving her candy…………………..She shook her head impatiently to clear her head and looked up. On one side stood a man who had so far done nothing but help them. On the other stood her mother and her terrified sister who was pleading her with her eyes to accept. Behind them stood her uncle, purple with fury holding his still confused son by the scruff of his neck. . Next to them stood the poor Sarpanch who nodded timidly but encouragingly at her
Madhu took a deep breath and turned to face him. "Yes" she said, proud that her voice didn't waver" I will marry you Mr. Kundra"

Rishabh finished telling the wizened old man who had turned out to be the registrar along with being the only and sole in-charge of the shed they called the village office, (Since '47 sir, the relic had informed him proudly) exactly what he wanted done. He turned to see his new sister-in-law happily distributing sweets to the rest of the villagers, all of them seeming to suffer from selective amnesia and rejoicing at the "happy" event. His lip curled in distaste at the blatant hypocrisy. His mother-in-law to her credit was more restrained and huddled in a corner accepting congratulations without comment. He frowned and twisted around, trying to locate the person he was searching for. He found her atlast, sitting some distance away, hidden from sight by a clump of trees
She was twisting the Mangalsutra around her pinkie wonderingly. His mother in law had dug out her mother's old one for the ceremony and it was too big and heavy for the child. Making a mental note to send her a new one soon he said" What are you thinking about, Biwi?"
Startled, she looked up. He was slightly startled too. The word Biwi had slipped out before he had even thought about it. But that was what she was now, wasn't it? His legally wedded wife. His Biwi
Affecting a lazy tone to mask the sudden attack of nerves he sat beside her and said" Why so startled wife of mine? Or would you prefer that I call you my Jungli Billi?"
She cracked a small smile at that." I think I prefer Madhu" she said hesitantly
"Nope, Biwi it is"
"Madhu is better"
"Biwi"
" Madhu"
"Biiiwi"
"Madhu!"
"Biiiwiii….Hey!" she had jumped up and whacked him on the head. Laughing he held her away, twisting her arms behind her until she too dissolved into laughter.
He grinned at her and said"Lesson 1: Mrs Kundra has a temper"
She nodded solemnly with a wicked light in her eyes" A very bad temper Mr.Kundra. I once broke a boy's nose"
He fell back with his hand over his chest, an expression of mock horror on his face. She giggled at that but quickly became solemn again
"I suppose you will be leaving soon" she said, a deep unexplainable ache growing in her chest
He nodded firmly" Just as soon as the registrar brings me the completed documents to sign. I have made over everything to your name with your mother as sole guardian until you come of age. Once I finish signing, you are mistress of this house and land"
"Oh" she said blankly. Composing herself quickly she asked" Will I ever see you again?" There was a wistful tilt to her voice
He darted a quick glance at her before going back to staring at the sky. In a voice which left no room for doubt he said "No"
"Oh!" she said again, realizing with growing horror that her eyes were slowly beginning to fill. She didn't cry. She never cried. She hadn't even cried when she had been trampled during the annual kabaddi game with Rajiv and gang. And now she was about to cry in front of this cool, sophisticated man and she didn't even know why!
She concentrated on not allowing those traitorous drops to fall. Dimly, she realized he was speaking again
"One day you are going to want out of this marriage, my choti biwi , and set up house with someone who loves you. That day, send all the required papers to this address and I promise you, you will be freed from this marriage in no time. Here" he passed her a slip of paper which she took with a muffled "Thanks"
The registrar was approaching them. Rishabh stood up, dusted himself and took the papers from him. She followed suit. It was over within minutes
The car drew up to them. He turned to her and extended his hand, the way she had seen people do in the papers. She hesitantly took it but to her surprise he turned it over and brought it to his lips. With a sudden tender look he said "Stay happy, my choti biwi" .
The next moment he was in the car. He nodded once to her mother, gave her one last smile and the car drove off. She watched until she couldn't see the minuscule dot anymore before collapsing into her mother's arms and crying her heart out without still knowing why

Rishabh Kundra dialed a number on his phone and waited till he heard the Hello
"Tazaan jewelers, what can we do for you" a cool female voice asked
"This is Rishabh Kundra speaking and I need to place an order" he said
The voice at the other end disappeared and a delighted middle aged voice took over
"Mr. Kundra ! What a surprise! What would you like to order?" he asked
Rishabh winced at the tone before saying "I need to order a Mangalsutra"
"Certainly Sir, any particular specifications?"
Rishabh detailed what he wanted done. When he finished the jeweler asked
"We will be drawing funds from the Kundra account Sir?"
"No"
"No sir?" for the first time in the conversation a hint of confusion entered the jeweler's voice
"No. You will take funds from the A/C-34227435" It was where he had put the proceedings from his first film, the first money he had earned and which he had hitherto kept untouched
"O…Ok Sir"
"And once you are done with it, send it to the address I texted you. Thank you" he hung up not bothering to listen to the rest of the man's words
PS:I know that the legal marriageable age of girls is now 18 but in 1998 it was 16yrs😊Originally posted by: PristineSoul

Brilliant. I had no idea how you were going to get RK married to a "child bride" but your idea was fantastic.
First there is NO yuck factor. Obviously Madhu - though 16 - is mature. And this was 5 years ago so I can accept the age difference. The reasoning is good and RK comes out of it looking like a hero.I am liking this!!!!
