CHAPTER 1- The Wedding

PART 1

Motihari, 5 years ago

The car rolled away leaving behind in its wake a group of excited, chattering villagers. The driver of the car had stepped out to ask for directions and had inadvertently divulged one of the most exciting pieces of news that they had heard for the past 10 yrs. There was going to be a shooting nearby!

"And why not?" they said. The village of Motihari was a relic from the days of the Independence, untouched, unspoilt. Progress and modernization had visited most of Gujurat by now (and left some parts worse for the wear) but Motihari remained unscathed, a tribute to the past. The women of the village still drew water from the village well. The men still depended on farming for their livelihood. The nearest town was 20 kilometres away. The only entertainment in place was visiting the ruined palace (where the shooting was to be) nearby. It was said that Raja Gyan Singh had once come upon this village while hunting and had been so impressed with it that he had ordered the construction of a summer residence there immediately. And that, the elders said (nodding their head sagely), showed you what Motihari was

Certainly a casual observer would not fault the Raja for his impulsive behavior. The place was, in a word, beautiful. Framed against a backdrop of rolling green hills, it could have posed as an advertisement for India Beautiful. Even Aamir Khan couldn't find fault with it. The village itself was dotted with huge trees, some of which were at least 12 feet tall. A single road wound its way in between them. Most of the houses and buildings, including the one school were made of mud and thatch and gave a quaint air to the place. It was the sort of place travel agencies described as "Full of old world charm Mam, a nice place to retreat to. Will that be cash or cheque?"

Rishabh Kundra glared through the tinted windows of his car. Lord knows what possessed the producer to set the shoot here. Any effect that could have been desired could have been manufactured at the studio, but no. The Director had wanted an authentic feel and the producer had immediately transported the shoot to an unknown village in Gujarat which possessed nothing more than a bumpy road!

But no objections could be voiced from his side. He was a beginner in the industry, with just one film to his credit (albeit a hit film) and with no backing or influence, he had to make his way on his own. This meant suffering such indignities as the production house having forgotten to send someone to pick him up from the airport in silence.

But he would show them, he swore softly. One day producers would fall over their feet to sign him, directors would bow before him, actors would tremble at the sight of him and the world would go crazy for him. He would have everything and he would prove to everyone that he wasn't and never had been a failure. He would taste again all that he had lost and more, sample every experience the world had to offer him

"Disgusted that any son of mine would want to go into theatricals"

"You are a loser RK and I don't stay with losers"

ENOUGH! RK suddenly smashed his fist into the door. His knuckles might end up black and blue but atleast the pain would distract him from focusing on such ...distractions. Distractions that he would now turn into his greatest strength. He would succeed, he thought grimly. He had to

A sudden scream jolted him from his thoughts. There seemed to be some sort of a gathering up front which was blocking their way. With an impatient sigh, he signaled the driver to stop the car and swung out to see what the noise was all about

PART 2

Madhu sank her teeth into her captors arm with all her might causing him to yelp and throw her down. Permitting herself a grin at this small victory she picked herself up and ran over to where her Didu was currently being held captive by her cousin Varun Chaudhary.

" Let her go!" she yelled , causing her crying mother and sister along with her uncle Balraj Chaudhary and his son Varun to look her way, startled . So did their henchmen. And so did the half dozen villagers surrounding them. She blinked at the sudden attention

Her uncle recovered himself quickly and leered at her" Well, well what do we have here. Madubalaji, come, come, we were waiting for your presence"

Madhu held her ground "Let her go, Balraj "

This only seemed to amuse him further though her cousin Varun did loosen his grip around Trishna

Balraj came closer to her and with a sudden shout of laughter said" Well, look at that now! Although you were born to my spineless excuse for a brother you seem to have inherited my blood, true Chaudhary blood. However Madhuji, women in our household call their uncles as Chachu and not by name" he grinned appreciatively at her before turning to her mother and saying suggestively " Chaudharain, are you sure you never decided to pay me a visit. Because my memory might be at fault here" before roaring with laughter in which he was joined by his son and men

"Balraj Chaudhary!" the words sliced through the air with the speed and precision of a whip

Balraj turned, all traces of mirth gone, his eyes watchful. The Padmini Malik Chaudhary shivered where she was standing and prayed to the heavens to keep her child safe

Eyes glittering dangerously, Madhubala held her uncle's gaze and said in a voice of ice "Let me remind you that you are standing on your brother's land, which is to say Shamsher Chaudhary's land and his soul will not forgive me if I allow you to insult his wife and my mother on our land. So kindly keep your filthy tongue behind your equally filthy teeth and leave as fast as possible taking your fan club with you"

Balraj stared incredulously at his 16 yr old niece before laughing again. This time however his men and son remained quiet. Suddenly his hand shot out and grabbed a man standing in the crowd

" Sarpanchji, how nice to see you again" he said

The Sarpanch wrung his hands and avoided the accusing stares of the widow and her children

Balraj continued, his grip tightening on the Sarpanch's collar" Would you mind telling my nave little niece, what you told me yesterday?"

The Sarpanch turned towards the tiny creature that stood in front of them with her arms crossed and chin held dangerously high

" Woh ...Madhu beti..." he trailed off

Madhu raised an eyebrow and asked coolly" Yes, kaka?"

"Well...according to the laws of our panchayat and the traditions of this village, women are not allowed to inherit property or money. Any land to be inherited goes to the daughter's husband. If the daughter is not married then the property goes to the nearest male relative who would be your uncle in this case"

Balraj Chaudhary went into a 3rd cackle of laughter and faced his suddenly pale niece , cruel amusement lighting up his eyes" So you see my dear, I have every right to say whatever I want on this land because it currently happens to be my land"

Turning to the gaggle of horrified onlookers, he made an expansive gesture and said" However, let it not be said that Balraj Chaudhary is not a generous man. In order to protect my late brother's widow and children I have decide that the eldest, Trishna will marry my son Varun , thereby keeping our family intact. Kyun, Chaudharain?" he asked to his horrified sister in law who was holding her terrified elder daughter in his arms. His lips curled. No spunk in these women. He could have told his brother that when Shamsher had decided to bring home town bred Padmini Malik as his wife. Town bred women were meek in his experience. Even Trishna's extraordinary beauty couldn't compensate for her lack of spice

Not like the other one. He studied his younger niece covertly, who stood stock still, deep in thought, her eyes partly furious, partly assessing. No beauty this one but there was fire in her. Fire and passion

He would deal with her later. Now he had more pressing matters to attend to

"Well Chaudharain? I am waiting for your answer. You need to keep your family safe. I need to keep my estate intact for which I cannot let you and your daughters leave with the money my brother bequeathed you from his personal fortune. It seems to be a fair trade-off to me" his tone implied that he would brook no opposition

Padmini Chaudhary tried one last time to save her children" Balraj , you can have the money. Please let us leave in peace"

Balraj sighed. How stupid " Bhabiji if the solution had been so simple , then why would I be wasting my time here? You would either have been out or dead. However my late brothers will states that the money either goes to you or charity which means even killing you won't get me my money. I am afraid I can't waste any more time discussing this with you. Varun beta, please proceed" he clicked his fingers and started to walk towards the house savouring every step

Trishna screamed and struggled as Varun Chaudhary gathered her into his arms and forcibly dragged her behind his arms. Padmini stared horrified and then turned to the crowd

" Sarpanchji , please help us. Don't allow this. Ramu kaka, my husband has helped you a lot. Help us back. Somebody HELP! Please" she screamed at them, alternatively pleading and begging these people who had benefited from her family when her beloved husband had been alive and now were turning the other way shamefaced, when her child was being molested in public view

"COWARDS!" she screamed at them before running after the brute dragging her daughter. Before she could reach them...

Bham! Varun Choudhary fell to the ground clutching his head and inadvertently releasing Trishna who ran back to her mother's arms. Both mother and daughter stared at the scene in front of them, paralyzed with shock and fear

Madhubala Chaudhary stood over her cousin, a shovel in her hands, her eyes spitting sparks at him. In a low, deadly voice she said "Touch my sister again and I will hit you again. But this time it will be hard enough to kill you"

Varun dropped his gaze and cringed on the floor. His father who had stopped mid step made his way back, his face dark.

"You seem to have an excess of courage, niece of mine. Are you aware of the proverb- Too much of a good thing can be bad for you?" he enquired, his voice deceptively light

Madhu stared back at him unafraid" I won't let my Didu be married to your son Balraj" she said, not beating around the bush

Balraj's voice remained light" Indeed. All right then. I respect my Bhanji's wishes. Trishna need not marry Varun"

A sigh of relief emanated from the crowd and Padmini sagged against a dazed Trishna

Balraj's hand shot out and wrapped against Madhu's neck" You can marry him instead" he said viciously, his face contorted in fury

Padmini screamed and ran forwards but was held back by Trishna and the villagers. The Sarpanch tried to remonstrate and was backhanded by one of Balraj's men for his pains. Varun stared at his father, his owlish face frowning in concentration, the blow to his head by his prospective bride having confused him

Madhu stared steadily into the face of the beast who held her by her throat. She would not give him the satisfaction of showing him the fear and disgust she felt.

Balraj gave her a lewd grin and said "What do you say Jhansi ki Rani? Would you be willing to share my son's life, his wealth, his company, his bed?" He was cut off as his captive suddenly spat in his face

Furious beyond belief now, he wiped the saliva off his face before raising his hand to teach her a lesson she would never forget when

"CUT IT!"

A/N- It is going to be four parts sorry. Part 3 is up

PART 3

Balraj turned , and his face darkened even more when he saw that the interruption had come from a young man , clearly a tourist going by his clothes and the expensive vehicle he was leaning against. At first glance all that could be made out was that he was in his late 20s, handsome and from a well-off background. Balraj ground his teeth when he realized that the stranger was giving him back stare for stare and seemed faintly amused by the assessment rather than shaken or shocked. This would be difficult

"Feel free to look. It is rare that I give an opportunity like this to anyone" the stranger drawled

Balraj turned purple

"Tch Tch …temper. You need to be careful there or you could end up bursting a vessel" the stranger said solicitously as he calmly and leisurely made his way over to them. Winding around Balraj, he slowly pried his fingers off Madhu's throat who reeled back coughing at the sudden loss of pressure. He might have been removing the top of a bottle of beer for all the emotion he displayed

Madhu lowered herself onto the ground, gratefully gulping in precious air. The stranger who had gone back to his car suddenly reappeared with a bottle of water in his hands. Kneeling down so that his face was at level with hers, he offered the bottle to her. She snatched it gratefully, too far gone in pain to remember her manners. A muscle quivered at the corner of her rescuers lips

"I promise you, there is no need to gulp it all down like that. There is more in the car and if you manage to exhaust that too, then I will send Patel to get some more" he smiled caressingly at her

Madhu finished her water and looked up. All her senses were back to normal now and they confirmed what she had noticed in the midst of her air deprived haze

He was devastatingly handsome. From the top of his head to his shoeclad feet he was perfect. But there was something more than that. He wasn't just handsome, he was dangerous. There was certain ruthlessness about his jaw, hardness in his eyes, the devil may care smirk he was sporting now which branded him as someone to be feared and kept at a distance. Since she was an idiot, she naturally wanted to know more about him

Two fingers snapped in front of her, jolting her out of her thoughts. She looked up to see him smirking at her and realized with horror that she had been staring at him the whole time. A deep blush of shame spread over her as he said" Earth to Madhubalaji"

Her head snapped up at that and she stared at him suspiciously" How do you know my name" she demanded

He rolled his eyes at that and said "Because I was present at your christening ceremony, honey"

She gaped back, puzzled at the last English word and confused at what he was saying. He groaned and said" That was sarcasm, sweetheart. I know your name because I was present for the entire duration of this delightfully interesting scene"

There he went again using English words she didn't understand. She had been sent to school, but so far she hadn't progressed beyond reading small sentences. She studied him puzzled. He was so unlike any other man she had ever seen and judging by the fascinated horror on the onlookers and her family's faces she gathered that they hadn't too. That he was a Bade Saab from the city was obvious, but the man himself was unfathomable. For example, no man in her experience had ever stood up to Balraj Chaudhary before yet this one did it as if it was the easiest thing in the world.

Speaking of Balraj……………………….

"Arre Oy Haraami!" Balraj seemed to have broken through his paralytic stupor and was now striding towards them

The stranger looked around enquiringly. Balraj looked at him confused before blustering " Oy!Here!"

The stranger still seemed to be searching for someone in the crowd. He then sighed and said" Will Mr. Haraami please step up? Dada here wants to speak to him and anyways it isn't nice to keep elders waiting"

The crowd tittered. Balraj spluttered and said"Oy! I am talking to you"

The stranger widened his eyes comically and said "Me? Oh Mr. Chaudhary my name is Kundra, not haraami. Rishabh Kundra at your service"

Rishabh. Madhu rolled the name around her tongue and smiled involuntarily. It suited him

Balraj who had been swelling up like a bullfrog with outrage tried again" Oy Kundra.." he was cut off in the middle

"No, no. Just Kundra is fine. No prefixes required" Rishabh said sweetly eliciting more chuckles from the crowd

Realizing that he wasn't going to win this Balraj spoke again, this time keeping his voice to a normal pitch , but words dripping with sarcasm "Accha Kundra. Will you be leaving on your own or do my men need to escort you?"

His opponent smiled back with equal sweetness (but achieved a much better effect on his audience) and said "No, I don't think I will be leaving any time soon"

"You won't?" Balraj stepped forward, all pretense dropped, his voice threatening

To his fury the man in question appeared unfazed "No you see, till the moment you decided to practice on her( gesturing to Madhu) the scene was interesting, extremely gripping" he said lazily. "But laying hands on a kid isn't really the done thing, doesn't have much of a mass appeal. Take it from one who knows"

Both Balraj and Madhu swelled with outrage. Balraj at being spoken to in such an insolent manner, Madhu at being referred to as a "kid"

"Do you think this is a picture?" Balraj roared out

The stranger smirked and said spreading his hands wide and turning to the crowd "A gentleman named Shakespeare once said-All the world is a stage. For Rishabh Kundra, already known as The Future of the Industry, all the world is a movie and wherever he goes, Picture toh SuperHit!"

This was met with thunderous applause from the crowd (and even a couple of Balraj's own men). Madhu bit her lip again. It figured that this exasperating, infuriating, devastatingly attractive man would be an actor

He turned to her at that moment and winked. She frowned back though her insides did a little jig

Balraj suddenly lifted the trembling Sarpanch off the ground and shook him, effectively shocking the crowd into silence "Tell him!" he bellowed "Tell him, the rules of our village and that not even a city Saab can disrupt these rules or change them. Tell him! "

Rishabh stared expressionless at the trembling Sarpanch as he repeated what he had said earlier. Outwardly calm, his brain whirred inside trying to find ways and means to extricate himself and this family from this mess. There were too many people for him to fight it out. He had no doubt that he could have this stopped if he reported to the nearest magistrate or police station but that was 20 kms away and Chaudhary would have done everything he wanted to by that time. He could appeal to the villagers, but judging by their earlier behavior he didn't have much faith in them. Still it was worth a try

"Do you not think it is time we discard such old laws when the laws itself become responsible for ruining someone's life?" he turned to the crowd with his most winning smile

The crowd murmured a little but stepped back all the same. The mother of the two girls, looked at him hopelessly, her face telling him clearly that she had already tried this line of approach and failed. Balraj howled with laughter

Damnation. While he had had a feeling that this might be required when the Sarpanch had first given his babbling speech , it wasn't exactly a pleasant decision to be making. But clearly there wasn't another way. He looked over to where she was standing completely still, her face puckered in concentration, not an ounce of fear on her face. Admiration stirred in him for this 16 yr old tigress who barely touched 5 feet but hadn't the slightest hesitation in knocking down men who tried to hurt her family. No, he wouldn't let her get married to that blockhead and endure a life of abuse. Making up his mind Rishabh Kundra turned to where Balraj Chaudhary was leering at him, still holding the Sarpanch in the air

"Very well then" he nodded" I agree to abide by your rules"

Balraj smiled in victory

"I'll marry her"

There was a moment's palpable silence before Balraj asked slowly, unsure for the first time in his interaction with this boy "You are going to marry Trishna?"

Genuinely startled Rishabh darted a glance to where the beautiful nitwit of an elder sister had shrunk back into her shocked mother's arms and looked back

"Good Heavens, No. I will marry the kid, Madhubala Chaudhary"
