Very Intriguing topic...I have recently discovered my fascination with this show...was very resistant to watch it for the longest time...I had always felt that Madhu cried too much...could never really connect with her character...so I never paid attention to the show...But my sister insisted that I watch and I did...and wow...I am finding a show extremely interesting after a long time...Coming back to the topic...Finding RK's obsession is engrossing to watch. For me Junoon has always had a negative connotation to it... Junoon is an excess of your passionate feelings...whether it be love, lust , anger, ambition etc...and an extreme of any emotion is not a good thing. In my opinion, whatever they are showing for RK is junoon is pretty believable...his obsession is not only with Madhu, its a combination of his self-obsession, his meglomania and narcissism with his unresolved feelings for her.To me it feels like, he cannot reconcile with the fact that he is deeply in love with her...from what I have seen of the show (mostly Madhu-RK wrestlemania and not the good romantic stuff) I feel that RK doesnt consider himself someone who is worthy of anyone's love...Admiration and adulation he has no problems with...but I feel there is a deep rooted fear or idea that he is an unlovale person/being (coz according to him he is not even human) So how can he trust or believ Madhu or even his mother, that they love him...He is constantly questioning Madhu that she loves him and only him...and it happened much after his whole attention/ obsession was passed from his mother to Madhu...After he reconciled with his mother...the deepest feelings he has ever experienced for anyone is Madhu...I feel he doesnt really know how to cherish this love...or even believe it for that matter. and Yet, despite himself he is in love with her.To me its not the gentle, sweet, romantic true love...This is a destructive, fixated obsession wala love (or a twisted form of it) ...its creating Havoc within him...and everyday he is unable to reconcile with his own feelings his obsession with her is increasing...I completely agree he is a maniac...and emotionally abusive and manipulative...and I believe thats what happens in Junoon...There is no right or wrong...his junoon and obsession is about posessing her, completely. It is exaggerated...but its not far off that someone who is obsessed with another person...who they have deep romantic feelings for, would manipulate, emotionally abuse or blackmail them to keep them around...For me I think he will do anything to keep her around...if he has to shed his own blood or her own it doesnt matter.I see the hurt, guilt and realization of what he has done to her...But the meglomania, the narcissism and his continental sized ego would never let him admit it to her...in his mind RK is akin to God and God doesnt come to apologize for anything...not his many injustices or many wrong doings...God only gives you something else to distract you from your previous pain...thats what he is doing...Dragging her around...and playing god with her...keeping her till she gives in...I hope this whole tirade made sense...but I have just discovered this show, so had a lot to say đł
Fabulous analysisđđđ I think you've described Junoon in context of RK perfectly...I especially agree with the point that he considers himself someone unworthy of love...and he's unable to fully reconcile with his love for her too...he doesn't know how to cherish it, he doesn't know how to DEAL with it...
I think there have been many interesting points made in this thread...I agree that RK is a manipulative and emotionally abusive character in some ways...and in real life, no one would have the patience to deal with such a twisted man...
But as a fictitious character, he is VERY compelling and interesting to watch in all his flaws and turmoil...
I personally feel the makers have walked quite a fine line without glorifying any sort of abuse while still keeping RK's essential characteristics intact which are needed since they form the basis of the show in many ways...
The reason I say this is cuz the scenes like him carrying her home forcefully or cutting his hand with the knife...this is shown through Madhu's eyes which rightly reflect outrage and disgust and not some kind of instant "romance"...it's good writing regarding two characters and the odds they are at but still drawn to each other.
I think people's opinions are colored by their own personal experiences...if someone has personally gone through domestic abuse or emotional abuse, they would have more emotionally charged reactions to some scenes and it would color their opinions.
If someone hasn't gone through the same or heard of something in a personal experience like that, they will be able to view it more objectively as a work of fiction/literature wherein abuse is NOT being glorified...the obsession is a part of RK's inherent characteristics and it manifesting itself in darker tones currently but not being glorified...Many famous literary works have also had flawed heroes but ppl don't take this on a personal note and start writing character certificates about who would make perfect husbands and who wouldn't.
The whole point of flawed characters is that they add layers to a story.
