The Lonely Swan

Madhubala Shamsher Mallik. That was her name. Her parents were Padmini and Shamsher Mallik. She had a sister call Trishna and an aunt named Roma Mallik. These were only little of the few details she still remembered of herself before the accident. According to doctors she has 'Retrograde amnesia'. She remembered things eight years before her accident, but nothing from the past eight years. For her, three months back she just passed from high school and was waiting for her university acceptance letter. That was actually eight years back. She has been in this amnesia rehabilitation hospital for the last three months they say, and nobody's still telling her how severe her condition was. The doctors have forbid anyone to remind her of her past as she was supposed to remember things herself. Her parents visited her every day and her Didu and aunt Roma came whenever they found some free time from their busy schedules.

Her life here was quite monotonous and lonely. She had nothing to think. She tried hard to think of the past years, though her doctors have forbidden this. They say, she shouldn't tire her mind. Is it any wonder her life was boring? Medication, food, medication, meet family, medication, chat with the doctor, medication and go to sleep. Of course she reads a book here and there. That doesn't change much. That was just the icing layer for her piece of a cake of a boring life. Meeting her family was like the icing swirl. It was good to see them, but the fact that they revealed nothing about her past eight years was frustrating. So every day they asked the same boring question, 'How are you feeling?'. She answered the same thing, that she was fine. In fact, she felt fine. So any idea what was the cherry on top of her piece of cake? That was reporting to her doctor and having that daily chat. That was the most exciting part of her daily routine.

She looked forward to it like a little girl waiting for her daily dose of chocolate. She giggled at the mere thought. Dr Rishabh Kundra was her specialist. One glance at him, anyone would think he's a modeller posing as a doctor. He was dangerously good-looking. Sometimes she wondered if he knew this. For a person so good-looking, he was very down to earth. He was friendly, witty, but at the same time professional. There was no denial she was attracted to him and mind you she wasn't the only girl in the ward.

Sometimes she felt this was wrong. What if she had a boyfriend who was waiting for her? When she asked her mother if she had someone, Padmini laughed and dismissed the idea. She was not surprised. She had always being the shy girl. Even during high school, while all her friends were into boys she was into books. Her imaginary boyfriend was her favourite celebrity, SRK. So it wasn't easy for her to control her attraction towards this God like doctor who looked as if he stepped out from a celebrity calendar.

Sometimes she felt he liked her too. For example, whenever she laughed at his little jokes the strange smile he had on his face, or whenever she turned to steal a glance at him to find him already looking at her, and even the intense eye locks they shared. It was as if he was attracted to her too, but she didn't want to entertain the thought and give herself hopes. What if it was her imagination playing tricks?

"Ms. Madhu, Mr. Kundra wants you." The strict matron of her ward informed her crisply, disturbing her thoughts.

Her heart started beating madly to a tribal rhythm. 'Silly, Madhu! Get a grip!' She scolded herself in her mind. She knocked on his office door and entered when she heard a "Come in."

"Take a seat, Madhu." He indicated the chair in front.

She muttered a "Thanks" and sat herself, trying to ignore the pace of her heart beat. Her face was getting warm, but she quickly fanned herself muttering, "Such a warm day!"

Mr. Kundra's smirk went unnoticed by her.

"So how are you coping today? Any flashes of memories?" He asked in a back-to-business tone.

"Not really. I can't remember anything after the snow-boarding accident. The last thing I remember is the back of my head hitting hard on the snowboard and hearing Trishna screaming. When I woke up I was here. I still don't remember the second accident or anything in-between." Madhu replied frustrated.

Mr. Kundra sighed. 'She has been telling this for the last three months. No progress at all.'

"All right. That's okay! Don't force yourself into thinking hard. It'll come." He smiled. He wrote down something and filled some forms inspecting her pulse etc.

After her check-up and reporting was done she thanked him and closed the door to his office behind her. She sneaked one last glance at him through the small window, only to find him clutching his head in dismay.

'Looks like I'm a failure to him.' She thought disappointed.

****

That night, as usual Madhu and everyone else in the ward were having dinner. Madhu who was too engrossed in her world of Dr Rishabh Kundra came back to earth again on hearing another girl gossiping about her object of affection. She boiled with anger, but had no choice but keep it to herself.

"Did you notice how extra good looking he was today?" She heard the girl ranting. "Too bad he's married." The girl sighed.

Madhubala's heart sank upon hearing this. 'He's married?' She swallowed. "How do you know?" She thought loudly.

The girl gave Madhu an annoyed look. "Why, didn't you ever notice the ring on his finger?"

Madhu was taken aback, but covered it by shrugging her shoulders as if she never bothered. That night she cried herself to sleep, promising herself she'd never think of him that way again.

*****

Few days passed. Her routine was the same except, there was no cherry on the top on her piece of cake of a miserable life. She avoided Dr. Kundra as much as she can. He noticed her difference and wondered what was wrong. She was very distant with him unlike the past days. He didn't question her though, although it bothered him.

One fine evening, she was in Dr Kundra's office doing her daily reporting. There was a knock on the door and she saw the matron outside. She indicated the Doctor to come outside. It was almost past five minutes and he was still outside. Madhu looked through the small glass window curious as to what was going. Dr Kundra looked angry and he was talking to a much shorter person. She could say from the way he was looking down to speak. He looked frustrated and seemed like he was scolding. She had never seeing him like this before. He was always the kind, caring and understanding person. She never expected to see him scolding anyone.

He came back inside the office rubbing his forehead. "Sorry about that." He apologised Madhu for her time.

Madhu politely said "It's all right."

He peeped through the slightly ajar door and instructed the short person, "All right. You come in and sit down."

Madhu looked to the door, curious herself. She was surprised to see a little nervous boy with a little backpack on his back, wearing a white Poor Bear T-shirt and blue shorts, entering the office.

Mr. Kundra helped the boy sit on a high stool next to Madhu. The little boy stole a glance at Madhu shyly and she smiled brightly at him. 'Poor little thing.' She thought to herself. 'Looks like Dr. Kundra is strict with him. So he has a son.' she sighed inwardly. The little boy kept watching Madhu closely while Dr Kundra examined Madhu.

Even Madhu couldn't help but give the boy side glances. He was a cute little thing; a mini version of his father. The boy was blessed with his father's good looks. He was staring at Madhu as if a Sun Flower was going to sprout from her nose. She giggled at the thought.

"What's so funny?" Dr Kundra asked raising an eyebrow.

"Nothing." Madhu said composing her herself.

(This is for anyone who cannot imagine a mini version of RK. =P)

Dr Kundra ignored her and went with his examining and writing down things. All the while the little boy kept watching Madhu with interest.

"What's your name?" Madhu asked trying to make small talk with him.

The boy looked taken aback. He reluctantly looked at his father and answered. "Aditya."

"I see. How old are you?" Madhu asked brightly.

He raised four fingers and said "Three!"

Madhu frowned reaching towards him and pulling down his little index finger and said, "Three!"

He frowned at her bringing up his index again and cried, "NO! THREE!"

Dr Kundra who was looking this little battle and shook his head. "Madhu, I'll teach him three later. You stay still."

Madhu stared at the doctor sourly and stayed still, while he checked her brain scans through a monitor.

Madhu caught the little boy watching her again and continued her small talk. "So where do you live?"

"India." Aditiya replied.

"INDIA?" Madhu started laughing her head off.

"Yes." The little boy replied confused what was so funny about it. "Where do you live?" The boy asked curiously.

"I'm also from India" Madhu winked at him and gave him a five. The little boy grinned happily.

Dr Kundra was watching Madhubala intently. For the past few days, she gave him the cold shoulder. Whenever she smiled it was forced. He smiled softly seeing this change in mood.

"Madhu the report is done." Dr Kundra informed her disturbing her little chat with Aditya.

"Oh." She looked at Aditya who looked disappointed himself.

"Papa, can't she stay?"

"Adi, she has to leave now. I have other patients to examine." He said sternly. "Didn't you bring your colouring book?"

Aditya pouted. "I don't want to colour. Can't I go with her?"

Dr Kundra sighed frustrated. "What did I tell you outside? I thought you promised me something."

The little boy got upset. "But papa, I was not naughty. I stayed just as you asked me. Please I won't trouble her." The little boy begged.

"She needs to rest, Aditya." He stated firmly.

The little boy's lips trembled.

"Don't you dare cry now or I'll send you home." Rishabh Kundra said unsympathetically.

Madhu was watching the whole scene aghast. "Dr Kundra. If it's fine with you can he come with me for a while? You know I won't rest till eight." She asked hopefully.

Aditya silently waited for his father's reply expectantly.

Rishabh Kundra sighed. "All right. I'll send him in five minutes."

Aditya Kundra smiled victoriously and Madhu winked at him and thanked Dr. Kundra and left the office.

*****

Ten minutes had passed. Aditya still didn't come to see Madhu. Maybe, the poor boy had been deceived by his father and sent home. Just then, there was a knock on her room and she opened it to find Aditya attended by a nurse.

"I'll come back in twenty minutes." The nurse smiled at the little boy and left.

Aditya waited till the nurse disappeared down the corridor and hugged her knees. Madhu bent down and hugged him back and took him inside her room.

She helped him sit on the hospital bed next to her. He looked around the average-size room curiously. "This is your room?" He asked surprised. "It's so small."

Madhu smiled. "Well, we can't be picky here."

"Don't you feel lonely here?" Aditya asked his eyes looking at hers expectantly.

"A lot!" She replied shortly.

"Who do you miss the most?" The boy pressed further.

"Hmm now that's difficult. I miss my whole family." She smiled at him.

"But- but you must be missing someone a looot." He frowned.

"I don't know. I miss all of them. My mother, father, Didu, and Roma. All of them!" She sighed.

"No children?" He asked in a little voice.

Madhu giggled at his question. "No children." She shook his head.

The boy frowned slightly.

'Such a cutie. He's so funny!' Madhu thought to herself. "Okay so what do we do now? You want to draw something or-"

"Can you tell me a story?" The boy asked his eyes pleading.

"Hmm sure. How about-" Madhu thought for a while and cried. "Goldilocks and the Three Bears?"

"Yes, please? That's my favourite!" The little boy grinned excitedly.

Madhu went on telling him the tale of the mother bear, father bear and the baby bear and the boy was all ears.

"Just then, Goldilocks woke up and saw the three bears. She screamed, "Help!" And she jumped up and ran out of the room. Goldilocks ran down the stairs, opened the door, and ran away into the forest. And she never returned to the home of the three bears." Madhu ended the story with a big grin and the little boy hugged her again and she hugged back, combing his soft hair back with her fingers. They stayed embracing each other for a while, both of them content.

Finally the little boy withdrew, his eyes searching hers. Madhu was surprised seeing how sad he looked. 'Wasn't he happy with the story? Why is he sad?'

Madhu cupped his little cheek wondering what's wrong. Little Aditya looked as if he was about to cry.

"Adi?" She whispered surprised.

Aditya looked surprised and suddenly happy. "You remember me?"

"Of course I remember you!" Madhu said confused. 'Does he think I'm an Anterograde amnesia patient?' She frowned to herself.

He hugged her again, happy this time. "I knew you'll remember me. I told papa so many times, but he never listened. He never let me see you." He complained sadly, his voice cracking.

Madhu was confused, but she played along as if she understood, not wanting to disappoint the boy. She thought maybe he was talking about the ten minutes he spent in his dad's office after she left. Maybe Dr Kundra was lecturing Aditya not to trouble her.

He moved to sit on her lap, resting his little cheek on her heart, hugging her tightly across the waist. 'Poor little child.' Madhu thought to herself. 'Maybe he doesn't get his mother's attention and even Dr Kundra has no time for him as he works here all day.' Madhu thought sympathising the boy.

She stroked his little back in soothing patterns, trying to calm his melancholic state.

He looked upward searching her eyes with his tear-filled eyes. "Please come home? I miss you, mama." Big tears started rolling down his cheeks.

Madhu's eyes widened with shock. 'Mama?' Her body went cold. Her breathing became heavy. She gulped, still breathing heavily.

The little boy who had his face buried on Madhu's chest was unaware of his mother's state. "I knew after telling about Goldilocks you'll remember me. Remember, how you used to tell how I'm the baby bear, you are the mama bear and papa's the papa bear?" He giggled innocently.

Madhu swallowed, still flabbergasted with the new found information. Lots of things made sense to her now. Tears trickled down her cheeks. 'This is her baby?' She wanted to scream wanting answers. 'Dr Kundra is her husband?' She felt dizzy. 'Why did everyone hide all of this from her? Even her parents acted as if Rishabh Kundra was just a doctor, not their son-in-law. Why all these lies?'

Aditya who felt tears falling on his head looked up to see his mother crying. He touched her face and softly said ''Mama, don't cry. I'll ask papa to take you home." He said reassuring his mother.

Madhu smiled tears still streaming down her cheeks. She cupped his face with both her hands and kissed his forehead, then hugged him tightly. She didn't remember anything, but she believed his innocent words. Anyway, she felt that motherly bond towards him.

Suddenly, the door opened and Rishabh Kundra was standing in the doorway. He was shocked seeing the scene before him.

"Adi? What's going on?" He feared his son had revealed everything to Madhu.

The little boy jumped off Madhu's lap and ran to his father and hugged his legs. "Papa, she remembers me." He informed his father excitedly.

RK looked at Madhu aghast. Whereas, Madhu looked at her husband her heart racing. 'Her husband,' that sounded strange, but nice. RK frowned, seeing Madhu's tear stained face and Adi's face which was no better.

"Aditya, what did you tell her?" He roughly grabbed his son fuming in anger.

Madhu gasped, scared he'd hit Aditya. The little boy ran from his father's grasp and towards his mother. His tiny fists grabbed onto his mother hospital gown and asked "Mama, you remember me right?"

Madhu looked at the little boy helplessly. Tears started streaming down her cheeks again, unable to answer his question for she did not remember him at all.

"I- I'm- I'm sorry Adi." She broke down.

The little boy flinched and took a step backward. "Mama, you don't remember me?" He asked in a small voice, his voice breaking. At the same time Madhu's heart broke into million pieces seeing the hurt look on his face.

Dr Kundra, who was watching the scene helpless himself, grabbed Aditya's little hand. "Adi, you have done enough damage for a day." He said sternly. "Let's go home now."

"No papa. Please?" The boy started pleading. RK started dragging the little boy who was hanging onto Madhu's arm with all his might. Madhu watched tears rolling down her cheeks, helplessly. She cupped the little boy's face one last time before he was hauled away from her. Rishabh Kundra quickly carried his son in his arms and left the room ignoring Aditya's cries and pleas.

She could still hear the screams and wails of her little son shouting for his mama in the far distance. His little pleas and cries echoed in her mind and it burnt her heart. She sobbed loudly and cried her heart out.

Loneliness enveloped her yet again. A nurse came to her room and made her forcefully lie down on her bed and sedated her to unconsciousness.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Okay, guys! Now don't throw chappals at me and scold me for making Madhu a Mama bear and RK a Papa bear! =S
