"RK"
There he was standing at my door looking at me with a smirk. How did he find me here? Did he follow me from the police station? No. He couldn't possibly have. I had left right away in a taxi not given him any chance to follow me. Than how? He snaps his finger in front of my eyes to bring me out of my thoughts. I wanted to close the door on his face but that is not what my mom has taught me. No matter what he is a guest and whether I like it or not I can't shoo him away although every fiber of my body wanted to do just that.
"What do you want?" (I finally managed to speak but instead of getting an answer from him he just leaned against the door dangling her bag back and fourth with a smirk. My bag? Oh my god did I forget the bag in the car? How did I not notice this?) "looks like you can't get away from me." (He pushes her aside and comes inside the house where her mother and her sister stared at him as if he was some kind of an alien.)
"Looks like I disturbed your dinner."
"ohh not at all...R..R..RK" (Trishna gets up walking up to him in a huge grin. Madhu roles her eyes as she stood right next to her mother.) "Would you like to join us?"
"Didu he is a big star am sure he is not used to eating middle class food." (She says while looking at him with anger which only made him smile)
"Madhu what kind of way is this to talk to a guest" (Padmini scolds her with disapproving look.)
"Actually, I just came to drop this bag that Madhu left in my car."
"What? Madhu you didn't tell me that RK dropped you home"
"woh didu"
"I guess she wanted to keep a secret." (He winks at Trishna making her more mad at Madhu) "I guess my work here is done. I will get going now." (He turns around to leave only to stop after taking a step. He turns around with a sorry look) "Actually, Madhu can you come out and show me how to get out of here? It was so confusing to find your house; I would've been lost if it wasn't for the nice people that helped me"
"Why don't you ask those same people again. Am sure they will be able to help you show the right way"
"Madhu! You go and help him. I will talk to you lateer." (Padmini looks at her with anger)
"But maa you don't understand"
"I don't want to hear anything. I thought Malik taught you girls well but I guess he failed in that area too."
She sits down with anger and grief. Madhu and Trishna knew what she meant. He had promised them that he would always be here with them. Always support them through thick and thin even if his life is in danger but he left leaving us all alone. Although, mom grieved him she had this little grudge against him for going away so quickly.
She never did got a chance to tell him how much she loves him. I placed my hand on her shoulder and nodded yes. I looked at RK with anger as I walked past him leading him out the door. I felt him right behind me, in fact very close to me; close enough for his breath to hit my neck making my hair stand at the back of my neck. Its not that it was cold but his presence alone was giving me some very wrong signals. I had this gut feelings that he isn't being nice just like that...something was in his head for sure.
"You know Madhu if you wanted me to hunt you down than you should've just told me. You didn't have to put this charade on and waste both of our time"
That was it. What does he think of himself? Does he think that I am of of those girls that would throw themselves at him just because he is a superstar? What is it with him that makes him so attractive to them. What is it about him that my own sister adores him to a point where it makes me want to puke? I never did had any fascination of him and nor I ever will. I quickly turned around looking at him with anger.
"Look Mr.RK don't mistake my actions for anything. I don't like you and as for the bag I was in a hurry to get away from you as soon as possible. Truth be told I hate you."
"Hmm interesting. Time will tell. Anyway, good night. We will meet again"
"I doubt it"
RK stops at the car looking at her with anger. A mere middle class girl dares to talk back to me? Don't worry Ms. Madhubala today I found out where your house is tomorrow you will be in my house. I will teach you a lesson that will shake you for life. Beware my dear. He smirks as he gets inside his car driving away.
Madhu goes inside her house with anger. She ignored the questions and anger that were on her mother and her sisters faces. Right now, she didn't have to answer them and needed to calm down before she does anything. One thing was really bothering her why is a superstar after her? Her! A middle class girl. What does he want from her? Nor she has any money or anything that she can offer him to leave her alone. Than what does he want?
RK sat in his home drinking heavily while remembering Madhu. I want you Madhubala, he says out loud. I want you under me. I want you for one night, screaming for my name. If I can't have you with your consent than I know how to make things come to my wishes. By hook or by crook you will be mine. Ohh I am going to teach you a lesson for denying me. I am a superstar!! He yells out loud while laughing. NO ONE DENIES ME! NO ONE!!! He yells as he throws the glass on the floor letting it break into tiny million pieces.
His ego was hurt and she is the one responsible when she dropped him at the police station. Although, he was amused but pain and anger also rose inside him but looks like God was on his side when he saw her bag inside the car waiting for him to take this another opportunity. Madhubala aahaan. He smiles to himself at his own inside joke and thoughts.
Babaji please don't ruin my day today. I hope I get this job as you know nah this beautician job will help me a lot with the household. I know Didu works part-time while she attends college and I want to contribute to that too. I can't let her handle all the house responsibilities all by herself. Please babaji give me blessings that all goes well.
She quickly prays before going downstairs to eat breakfast. She saw her mom in the kitchen making food while Didu set up the table.
"Good morning. Should I take food for Roma?"
"Madhu beta please could you try and ask her to eat with us? I don't like that she has been living there all alone after Malik..." (Padmini stops talking trying to control the tears. Trishna and Madhu look at one another. She motions Madhu to go fetch Roma.)
"I will be back maa"
How will I convince her to eat with us? Maa knows that she likes to be alone god knows how many times we have tried to talk to her but she just shut everyone out. Babaji how many other pains are you willing to put us through? What more is there left for us to endure? Please make everything okay.
Madhu stood in front of Roma's room. Her hand shook for some reason as she was about to push the door open. Slowly, she opened the door peeping her head inside to see her. All she saw was darkness as if no human had ever lived there.
"Roma."
"Go away. I want to be alone"
Madhu sighs in relief to get a response from her. She pushes the door open turning on the light. She saw her lying on the bed squinting her eyes to adjust to the new light in her dark room and life. Madhu marches toward her kicking away the liquor bottle. The whole room stank of liquor, even a mouse would die in here. Madhu quickly goes to the window, pushing away curtains to let the fresh air come in. She sat next to Roma holding her hand looking at her with tears.
"Go away Madhu. Leave me alone"
"No, Roma. How can we? You mean so much to us"
"Go Madhu. You and I are no one. We have no blood relation than why are you here? Let me die in peace?"
"You are right we have no blood relation but we have a special bond that no one can break. Roma do you think Malik would be happy to see you like this? He was your brother, do you think his soul would rest in peace knowing how much his sister is suffering? Don't you want to live for him? Don't you want to be happy for him?"
"No. I don't give a damn about anymore. Madhu leave from here before I do something. Please" (She jerks her hand away but Madhu was not going to give up)
"No. You are not the only one that is suffering. Mom is suffering too. Do you know that she loved Malik but was never able to voice it? Did you even once look into her eyes to witness that pain of loosing a loved one? Trishna and I lost our father but look at us we are trying to move on with our lives and trying to be happy because that is how Malik wanted to see us. Why don't you get it?"
"Than why did he leave us?" (Roma hugs Madhu letting out her sorrows that she had bottled up this whole year) "Why did he leave all of us like this? Didn't he knew what we are nothing without him?"
"Roma there was nothing he or we could do. We just have to move on. Please if not for me than for mom come with me to eat."
"okay.."
Madhu helped Roma stand up before they could even take a step she fell down dropping the beer bottle on the floor. Madhu looked at Roma in shock.
"ROMA!"
Madhu wakes up sweating. She looks around her surroundings in fear. She had a feeling something bad was going to happen to Roma. She ws feeling restless..if there is anything that her Malik taught her was to trust her instincts. She slowly gets off the bed not wanting to disturb RK who was sleeping like a pig while she was in pain. She muffles her screams as her injured foot hits the ground. She had to get out of here today and go see Roma. She can't stay here knowing something might happen. No, she can't let another guilt take over her life.
She was relieved that RK was little bit drunk to realize what was happening. She had to get out of here before he wakes up and stops her. Slowly, she limped towards the door once at the door she looks back at RK making sure he is fast asleep. Sighing in relief she proceeds out the room toward the staris.
Okay Madhu you can do this. You can go down the staris slowly. Take a deep breath and one step a time. She looks at the grand staircase suddenly everything seemed so big now that her ankle is injured. The journey seemed so long but she had to do this no matter what. She didn't care that it was three in the morning she had to go see Roma or else she won't rest in peace. Holding on to the only support she had, slowly she started going down the stairs ignoring all the pain that her leg caused. Today, wasn't about her but it was about her family.
A small victory smiles adores her face as she had successfully reached the bottom of the stairs. She looks back up again makings sure RK was no where near. Without a care, she half ran out of the house to see her family. She didn't care about the consequences or anything. RK can do anything he wants but after she knows her family is safe.
RK stirs in sleep, he places his arm to the other side of the bed where Madhu usually slept. He wakes up upon finiding it empty. He slowly opens his eyes half way looking around "Biwi" He saw the bathroom light on and assumed she was inside the bathroom. He hits his head against the pillow before dozzing off.
"Didu please open the door.."
Madhu bangs on the door for the past half hour waiting for Trishna to open up the door. It wasn't easy getting here with an injured foot but she had to. Something wasn't right. Finally, after about half hour she saw the light of the living room turn on. Trishna opens the door shocked to find her sister looking at her with tears. She was worn out. Her forehead was sweating even in this chilly night. Madhu quickly hugs her tightly with tears.
"Didu where is everyone? How is Maa? How is Roma? Are you guys okay?"
Trishna looks at her bewildered as Madhu looks at her from top to bottom inspecting her closely for any scratches or injuries. Trishna tried to calm her down but Madhu was hysterical. She was in her own little land. After giving up Trishna had no other option but to slap Madhu. She looks at her with tears. Trishna grabs her by her arms shaking her in anger.
"What new drama are you doing?"
"Its not a drama didu. I had a dream about Roma. I had to come and make sure everyone was alright."
"Madhu don't you know that Roma is in the rehab? You were the one that put her there. Where is your head?"
Suddenly, it dawned on Madhu what she was saying. It has been six months since Roma has been in rehab. In fact, after her little talk with Roma she herself wanted to make an improvement and live for Malik. How can she forget that? Her sister looked at her as if she was crazy. How can she tell her what she is going through? Everyone hates her. No matter what I do, I always end up getting the blame for everything. Not wanting to stay another moment, I turned around to walk back to my personal hell. I screamed in pain when I tried to walk..all of my energy was drained but I couldn't stay here and let them suffer more.
"Madhu..."
I looked at my sister as she showed full concern for me like the old days. Am I dreaming? Is she being the same Didu that I know and love? I wanted to hug her but I was afraid to loose this moment. I wanted to cherish this moment forever.
"You uhh can stay here for the night. Its not safe for you to go back like this" (Trishna turns around trying to hide her tears as she said this)
"But..."
"Come inside..I don't have all night. I have to go to work in couple of hours. Your room is still the way you had left it."
"Didu..I don't want to trouble you or mom"
"This is nothing Madhu compared to what...anyway come inside its getting late"
Madhu nodes in tears as she slowly goes inside. Trishna heats up milk with haldi for her as it will help heal her ankle. Madhu goes inside her room, just the way she had left it, just the way she had rememberd. There are so many memories associated with this room that she can never forget. This is where I and Didu used to come and hide from Malik whenever he chased us with milk. This is where me and Didu spent countless hours talking, dreaming and planning our future. Now, they will remain nothing but distant memories for me.
I wanted to tell Didu why I did this but I had a fear would she ever believe me? I mean this whole thing sounds so filmy who would in their right mind would think that it happened for real? Anyway, I just hope when the truth does come out she is able to forgive me. Until then, I will wait for that day.
I looked at my sister, she seemed so fragil and broken. Something was off for sure. I know she might have her reason for doing what she did but I am so angry at her. She didn't trust me enough to know that I could probably help her. I wanted to ask her about her ankle, how did she get it injured, did he hurt her but I didn't have it enough of me to do that. Whenever I tried showing my conern my anger over powers it. My mind just goes blank and just remember the moment when she comes home with RK, married. I look at her one more time as she drinks her milk before heading upstairs to sleep.
RK squints his eyes as the sunlight hits him directly. "Close the curtains biwi!" He yells and places his arm on top of his eyes to block the light. "Biwi! My tea hurry up."
I waited for her to say something. I waited to hear some movements but nothing. It was really quiet. Usually, I would hear some smart remarks from her but today nothing. What is going on. I opened my eyes and looked around my sorrondings. Everything was the same but then where was biwi? I looked onto my left side, the bed was empty. Even last night, when I opened my eyes she was not there.
RK sits up with anger as he goes toward the bathroom. The door was open and the light was on but there was no biwi. He slams open the bedroom door yelling for her name but no response. His anger knew no bounds. He calls security guy.
"Did biwi leave the house in the morning?"
"Sir, she had left last night around 3 in the morning. I tried stopping her but she woudln't listen since her leg was injured."
"Couldn't you have called me?"
"woh sir you had told me not to disturb you.
"YOU ARE FIRED!"
RK slams the phone on the ground breaking it. You can't leave unless I free you. Beware, Madhu. You just invited more trouble. Looks like I have to change some game plan. He marches out of the house with a smirk heading toward the only place where she must have gone too.
Madhu woke up with a smile. She felt so light and happy being back in her home but she knew she had to go back and face her devil today. He must be angry but right now she didn't care. Right now all that mattered was her and her family. She was glad that the swelling in her ankle went down and she was able to walk slowly without any pain. She went to the kitchen to help her Didu with breakfast knowing how many responsibilities she has on her.
"Didu can I help?"
"No. I am done. You can.."
"leave.." Madhu completed her sentence with tears. Trishna looks away pretending to be busy. "Can I see mom before I go?"
"yeah make sure you don't wake her up"
"Thank you!"
Madhu watches her mom sleep from the doorway. One day mom, when you feel better I will tell you the truth. I just hope you will be able to forgive me and understand where I was coming from. You and didu mean the world to me. You guys are my family. Even though I am far away, I will always be here to help you guys no matter what. I am ready to face my hell for you guys. I love you mom.
I looked at my didu one last time before I left the house to go meet Roma. Trishna wanted to stop her from leaving but she couldn't. She needed some time to get over this.
RK drove madly to her house in anger to bring her back. How dare she leave like that and that too from him without his permission? You really don't know what you got yourself into. You really think you will do this and get away from this? If not you than someone close to you will pay. You thought I wouldn't be bad just because I showed you sympathy. Well, dear biwi. You haven't really seen the real RK yet.
Madhu arrives at the rehab center to meet Roma. She couldn't go home without her. She needed to know if she was okay. After sitting in the waiting room for half hour, Roma had finally arrived. Madhu was happy to see the old Roma, who is full of life back. Her smile, her crazy hair and her attitude, everything was back. She gave Madhu a big tight hug and kissed her face numerous times with tears.
"Kaisi hai tu? Mother India kaisi hai? Aur woh Trishna? Bata na? You came alone? Where is Trishna. You have no idea how happy I am to see you"
"Bas bas Roma. So many questions you have in your mind." (Both laughed. Roma looks at her attired and holds her mangalsutre in hand in shock)
"What is this? You...you got married? How? When? I wasn't eve told? You guys don't consider me as a family anymore?" (She looks at Madhu in tears. Madhu shakes her head no and makes her sit down.)
"Actually, I had to get married. Roma you trust me na? You know I don't do anything without a reason. Just think that me getting married I also had a big reason. Maa doesn't know. You know how sick she is after Malik"
"I know but Madhu all of this..what happened? Please tell me. There is a strange feeling inside me. Please."
"I will when the time is right. For now, lets speak of something else. When will the doctors let you leave?"
"In another month. Tell me who you got married to?"
"woh uhh"
"ME! She got married to me..RK-The Superstar"
Madhu looks at him in shock. How did he manage to find me? I looked into his eyes and they were filled with anger and hatered. I held on to Roma's hand tightly. RK came straight towards me picking me up in his arms while walking away leaving Roma shocked.
"Let's go home biwi."
He places her inside the car as he drove to the house.
"I didn't know you could run a marathon with that ankle of yours and that too all night. I had asked for a biwi instead I got an athlete."
He smirks and he looked at Madhu who sat in the car quietly.
"I had to see my family. I had this weird..."
"whatever..you made your decision now its my turn"
"Do whatever you want. I don't care."
"meow! I like that...you are like a jungli bili. Good to know I don't have to deal with a weak person. It will be quiet fun biwi. Let the game begin"
