The story and plot belongs to both Nisha and me. However, we write alternative chapters individually, just so it's easier for us. Hope that answered your question, Doopsie!!
Part 3
The sight that met Prithvi's eyes was shocking to say the least. The kitchen looked as if a whirlwind had hit it. There was flour everywhere, assorted vegetables were spread out all over the countertop and Damini was reading the cookbook he'd given her very intently. Inadvertantly, Prithvi smiled. Damini looked rather frazzled, but adorable - her hair was mussed, she had flour smeared on the side of her face and her forehead was furrowed as if the cookbook was written in latin... "This should be fun", Prithvi thought smiling, as he leant against the door and watched his wife attempt to cook.
***********
Damini picked up a couple of potatoes and stared at them uncertainly. How was she supposed to mash them when they were so hard? Really, running a business was any day easier than cooking! Sighing, she turned to the book again, trying to figure out the mystery of mashing the potatoes. Her face cleared as she read the instructions - "Oh!! They have to be boiled first... that makes sense..." Relieved, she set a pot of water to boil and threw the potatoes in. Feeling very pleased with herself, Damini picked up the knife to cut the rest of the vegetables...
***********
Prithvi chuckled to himself as he stood observing his wife's antics. She hadn't noticed him yet, and he intended to keep it that way... For all his amusement, he was very touched to see that Damini was cooking for him. "What have I done to deserve you, Damini?" he questioned himself softly, watching her tenderly.
Just then, he noticed that she'd picked up the knife and was holding it all wrong. She began chopping awkwardly, and he frowned. She'd definitely hurt herself if she continued like that. He'd just stepped out to stop her, when she exclaimed "The potatoes!!!" in a worried tone. Before he could say a word, she'd jostled the pot with a spoon and hot water splashed onto her hand...
***********
"Ow!" Damini screamed, jerking her hand away. Suddenly, Prithvi appeared by her side and snatched her hand, trying to see the extent of the burn. Quickly, he dragged her to the sink and held her hand under the tap. Damini relaxed as the cold water slightly soothed her burn. She looked up at Prithvi and promptly looked down again. Prithvi looked really angry and she began to wish herself elsewhere.
"What were you attempting to do, Damini? Why did you have to come into the kitchen? And why the heck can't you take better care of yourself?" Prithvi yelled, leading her out of the kitchen and to their bedroom. He made her sit on the bed and went to get the first aid box, still ranting furiously "Why do you always get into such situations? Don't you have the sense to handle hot pots carefully? What if I wasn't there then? He came to sit by her and slowly started daubing burn ointment onto her hand, blowing on it softly to ease the sting. "Don't ever go into the kitchen again" he said firmly.
When he was satisfied with his handiwork, he looked up, only to find Damini staring at him with a curious expression in her eyes. "You don't want me to enter the kitchen and cook for you?" she said, slightly mockingly. He remembered then, how he'd insisted that she cook for him and had left without eating the other morning. Groaning inwardly, he got off the bed. "Just don't cook, ok?" he said and tried to walk away...
Damini was too quick for him. She grabbed his hand and turned him to face her. "Why are you acting so strangely, Prithvi? What is wrong?"
Prithvi said nothing. What could he say? How could he possibly tell her what he was going through? This was all a big mistake... Damini's voice shook him out of his reverie "Why did we get so messed up, Prithvi?" she said softly. "I don't know what you are talking about, Damini"he said, his heart sinking.
"Stop it! Stop acting dense, because I know you aren't. And please stop acting like you don't care, because I know you do..." she said turning to face him.
"Damini..." he began. "Why are you hurting me, Prithvi? What did I do to deserve this?" she asked him, her eyes reflecting her pain.
Unable to see her like this, Prithvi closed his eyes. She placed her uninjured hand on his cheek, and softly whispered "I love you..." Opening his eyes, he saw her looking at him with love, her vulnerability etched on her face. Throwing sanity to the winds, Prithvi gathered her in his arms, hugging her like he'd never let go.
After some time, Damini whispered "Let's take a break, Prithvi. Let's go somewhere, just you and me. Please..." Prithvi knew it was a bad idea, but he couldn't resist the temptation. "Ok, Damini, we'll go", he said "Do you have a place in mind?". Damini looked up, smiling "Yes. I want to go to Manali..."
