Damini paced in her room, was it just this morning that there was happiness all around? it all seemed so long lost

Avni, her younger sister - she was broken, maybe even beyond repair, crying, destroying herself in another room, and she was helpless

She, Damini, had always made sure that no harm came her family's way - she'd become the man of the family, she was strong, she was determined, she could take on any adversity - and yet, she'd stood there, her arms around her sister, unable to say anything - unable to wipe her tears off - unable to bring a smile to her face.

she'd promised herself that she'd take care of her family - she'd failed.

Damini plopped down on the bead sloppily, her head dropped to her hands, the tears she'd controlled earlier, came freely now.

if only things had been different...

If only things had been different..., Prithvi kicked his foot in frustration - he couldn't believe his own younger brother had done such a thing to Avni.

He never thought Sameer would do this to her, and when his brother destroyed her, he couldn't stop him. He had been helpless as Sameer had carried out his ruthless revenge

He felt responsible, he'd promised himself that he would not let his brother sink low - he wouldn't let Sameer do any further harm than he'd already done to Avni - he'd promised himself that.

He'd failed.

" Why?" the soft tear filled questioned jerked him from his disturbed thoughts, " Why? Why, my sister? Why her...?"

Damini looked up, addressing the ceiling, her eyes were distant and tears streaming down her face - she looked broken. He acted purely on instinct, walking in, he crouched before her, taking her hands in his he said softly, " Damini.."

her eyes jerked back to him, " Prithvi, mein kya karun?" she asked helplessly

He wanted to answer, he wanted to tell her it would be okay, he wanted to tell her all this was a bad dream - he hated it that he could not do that, so he kept quiet.

" I wish things had been different... better" she cried, " It's all my fault, I should have known - I should have spoken to Avni earlier, I was too caught up..."

That was it - her last sentence drove a knife into his heart, she was blaming herself? " Damini..." he couldn't say anything beyond that - what would he say, " it's not your fault - it's all mine - It's my fault that I couldn't stop my brother from stinking so low??"

" Your family needs you now, Damini - be strong for them "

" Mujse nahin hota, Prithvi.." she said, and fell silent, after a couple of seconds she looked at him, and said thoughfully, " kya sab kuch theek ho jayega?" she asked, the need for his re-assurance shining in her eyes.

She looked so helpless that he would have said anything to make her feel better, " Of course"

Damini did not realise it when she asked him, but she did the minute she heard him say it - Prithvi telling her, made it seem believable, it gave her hope.

She did somethign she thought she was not capable of - not tonight, not after what happened to Avni... she smiled. Her husband smiled back in return, and there was relief in his eyes.

Her hands entwined in his, their eyes holding each other, his presence giving her strength, at that moment she knew...

She knew that...

Things would get better

The two of them together were stronger than her alone.
